So I guess Skyrim Still Runs on the Gambryo Engine

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 10:16 pm

Bethesda said for some time that it was running on a "from scratch" engine but now that the game is out it appears that it is the exact same engine with somewhat upgraded graphics and of course highly upgraded scripting. I'm not saying they are completely identical but for Bethesda to claim that it is on a brand new engine is baffling. I hope the next TES is on a real new engine, I still think they should have waited till next gen to release Skyrim

I hope they at least patch the PC version to take control of DX11 like Crytek did with Crysis 2 (if the Gamebryo is capable of that)

How do you know the engine is the same? Because it plays similar to the previous titles. If it used the same engine as Crysis 2 how would the game be different?

play crysis 2, run around. ignore setting.
now play oblivion and skyrim, run aroud. ignore setting.

Thats how the game would be different.

I love how people think they can tell what engine it is purely by the graphical quality.

You couldn't do a game this massive with cryEngine3 photo real graphics. It would be too large of a file and the memory to run it would be insane. Love to see it myself, but at this point I don't see it happening.

r graphics really that big a deal? an rpg game should be about content. if u want to see pretty colors, i suggest an art museum.

Well, if they say it's a brand new engine, then it's a brand new engine. Why should they not tell the truth? Because the Illuminati compromised your game experience? Because it's not like Morrowind that you loved so dearly?

Ist doch wohl mal klar das eine Engine, auch wenn sie neu ist, der vorherigen Engine ?hnelt^^

There was actually a specific interview (may have been several can't remember) where Todd stated that they weren't originally going to do a completely new engine, and instead they changed parts of the old one, liked what they did, changed more etc etc till most of it became new.

I've played Crysis 2, I fail to see your point. I can climb up a ledge? I see my hands reach out to open a door. I think your confusing gameplay with the engine.

well now that I think about it Skyrim feels like more of an action game lol it has lost all of its depth in terms of role playing elements

but that is besides the point of this thread, it is possible to create good graphics in an open world environment. they could have at least added stuff like god rays and SSAO... even Oblivion has these implemented by modders

It's called The Creation Engine, and it was built from scratch.

I love graphics as much as the next guy, and I gotta say skyrim looks incredible, minus a few crappy textures here and there.

Never at any point did they say it was from scratch. Pete Hines tweeted shortly after the game was announced that the engine was new and that was the extent of it then. When the first previews and interviews came out they clarified, saying it was built from the old Oblivion engine but that they had recoded everything important, which they did.

The graphical quality doesn't really have anything to do with the engine (apart from the shadows, really), it's a matter of assets. The 360 can't handle anything other than low-res textures on a game like this, and unfortunately for some reason it seems they decided modern gaming PCs can't either because the textures range from great to just plain crap. Interiors are absolutely beautiful, I've noticed, and with some hi-res textures the exteriors could look a lot better.

But the fact that it takes me three seconds to load after fast traveling speaks of how much better the engine is.

'same issues' being which ones? the only major one I can think of is CTD after prolonged play sessions and I have yet to experience one (not saying others arent so fortunate).

Now Now Gregasaurus, Bethesda knows that modders will do the required work for the PC to look amazing (granted they probably "should" have done it in the first place but TES games always have a great modding community that it's all good)

No no, it's exactly the point you wanna make here. You raise biased arguments against Skyrim, like..."oh [censored], it has become a Action-RPG", "it lost the depth in RPG terms" or "Where's the toilet paper I need to [censored], it's all Bethesdas fault", learn that the majority of people playing Skyrim enjoys the game, while you can't, and then trying to bash the game in a incompehensible way, just because it's not like Morrowind, right?

You're wrong...Skyrim rocks...even more then Morrowind...it needs some mods, true, but then it's going to be the best ever TES game. You just fail to see it, because you can't get over your biased attitude. Your expectations on Skyrim were so high, all you could experience with the game was a big pile of grievance cause it's not like previous TES titles. Go with the future, accept innovation, leave the old skin behind. If you can't then stop playing the game and leave the forums, cause all your unreasonable complaints are just hilarious.

Glad to hear that textureloading bugs only happen to me alone. Because they were also there in oblivion in much the same manner.

Except someone wants to confirm its not my 2011 built PC that has trouble with loading textures and says "yes, I had the same bug"
