Guide to pure, sneakless archery.

/snip

I also wanted to ask if you use any .ini settings in order to get those damn arrows to reach longer range, and if those setting work. I didn't try them before and I find it annoying that I can see a creature pretty far away (hence, it's loaded) but when I fire my arrow it doesn't reach the thing.

Hello Lorelai,

We need another DID thread,

OT : I know that there is a range setting for the bows, in the CK. I retextured a set of Imperial Armor and added a retextured Imperial bow (well it was actually a black Hunter Bow with Imperial stats). During that little change/addition I noticed that the bow had a range adjustment, but I didn't get into messing with that. I did however change the bashing effect from bow/staves to heavy shield. Not real sure to what effect that had, yet.

The range thing could be easily expanded on...I think.

^^Yeah, we need it. I'm currently trying my luck with a bard with weapon-instruments mod, haha.

Got it! the .ini setting is fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=12288.-0000 under [Actor]

@The Dragon Slayer. Yes it is! I play on PC but I use an XBox controller. I try not to abuse that perk too much as it sometimes seems a bit OP (or at least keep it at the first level) and because I want to practice my aim with the controller.

Yeah, I see what you mean about bashing. It would be used rarely so it wouldn't level up enough...

As for the multiple ingredient poisons, I'm curious in what order the effects apply. Say you have a "weakness to poison, damage health" poison, will the weakness be applied correctly before damage effect?
About frenzy, 30 seems pretty low...but if it would be higher the Archers would be like arrow-shooting Illusion mages, so I'm ok with is being that way.

30 is actually not low, because NPC levels in Skyrim cap at around 35 I believe (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). This is because when you reach that level, you're usually at the peak of your combat power (ie. 100 in your primary combat skill). If the NPCs kept leveling up and doing higher damage as well as have more HP, you wouldn't be able to keep up. It's only a combination of crafting professions which makes the game post 35 completely trivial.

I use the .ini setting to remove the arrow 'auto aim'. You know, the code that makes arrows fly above the crosshair so you don't have to arc your shots so much. I hate it. I haven't unlocked the range because I think it's adequate as it is, but you can do it like this (in skyrim.ini):

[Actor]fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=14000.0000

I find Steady Hand essential on no-sneak archers on a 24" screen with an Xbox 360 controller.

Yup, my neighbor plays on the Xbox and it's a pain to aim accurately without steady hand. But on PC I think it's a waste of 2 perks and just makes combat slow and tedious. But I wouldn't want to play this build on the Xbox anyway because doing constant 180 degree spins with the thumbstick would get annoying fast.

Even with fortify alchemy enchantments 100 you are only hitting level 24 with frenzy and fear. Not super useful.

Here is one thing, how about using a bow enchanted with a low level frost enchantment. That applies a slow effect for three seconds by default. That way you do not have to focus on alchemy.

Best bow for kiting is the highest damaging bow that is fast enough to kite with (I'd never use a daedric bow for kiting because it takes forever to shoot). One day I'll do the math to figure out which bow this might be. Ideally, you'd have two bows: one for kiting, another with the highest possible dps for shooting ranged NPCs. I can't be bothered with that though hehe. Long bow ftw!

If you are not smithing that the long bow may not be a bad choice. It is the fastest and if you are not smithing, the damage difference between a long bow (which has no smithing perk) and any other bow is not going to be nearly as noticable as it would if you were smithing. If you are smithing, then I might go with the hunting bow, which is faster than any other bow but the long bow, does a little more damage than the long bow and can be smithed "twice as good" with the steel smithing perk and a leather strip.

Added a tiny bit more info to the poisons section. Tomorrow I'll post a kiting video of the toughest dungeon I encountered (a tiny fort with 3 melee NPCs at the entrance).

Slow poison is superior because it allows me to keep multiple melee NPCs slowed for a long time. Can't do that with an enchanted bow. Also, applying poisons makes things more interactive and fun.

I don't smith. Even a hunting bow would probably make things a little too easy when upgraded to epic.

As promised, I updated the OP with a link to a video where you can see the build in action.
