HAHA It looks like Ponies!

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 1:41 pm

I was playing FO1 not too long ago and my 12 year old son comes over and says, "This game svcks. The graphics are terrible." I replied with,"Boy, you wouldn't know a good game if it jumped up and kicked you in the face. Go outside and bring coal in for the stove." To which he replied, "Why, the bin is almost full?" and I then said, "For running your mouth and talking smack about one of the greatest games of all time." Then he said, "That's not fair." and then I said, "Stop running your mouth and stop sayimg stupid things." Then I went back to shooting raiders.

Nice. Teach that runt a lesson! Should have gave him 10 pushups for good measure!

Kids today just don't understand gameplay over graphics.

The people that played Daggerfall when it they were kids probably looked at Zork and went 'HAHA ITS JUST TEXT LOLOLOL LAME'.

I like reading them. They make me feel incredibly smart compared to the rest of the world.

EDIT: Me getting a LEGO set 15 years ago - 'OMG LEGOS! AWESOME!'

A 10 year old getting a LEGO set today - 'Looks like Minecraft'

Reading Youtube comments makes me feel stupid, because I usually have no idea what anyone is talking about. "This looks like Minecraft@#$@#!" No, no it doesn't.

Thanks Gheart, now you made me lose my faith in humanity.
And "it looks like minecraft" aren't even the worst comments.
I quote: "OMG Skyrim really was revolution", "This explains why FO1 and FO2 were [censored]"

This. These are the comments that kill me.

I'll be watching a Morrowind video, and the comments consist purely of how far TES/gaming has come since then.

What's Morrowind? Is it a mod for Skyrim? Sounds interesting. Just hope it doesn't have those Minecraft graphics in the video the OP linked.

Actually, if anything, Morrowind looks more like Minecraft than Daggerfall or Arena.

To be honest, I don't think Minecraft looks like any of the TES games. I don't see Minecraft's graphics as being outdated, I see them as being stylized. Arena/Daggerfall/Morrowind's graphics are outdated (this doesn't make the games any worse, of course!). I just don't think there's much of a comparison, aside from the decreased density of pixels.

What is the "Current Generation of Gamers" anyway? What age group are we talking about? People who grew up in the 2000s, or people that are growing up in the 2010s?

How many gamer generations have there even been? Not many, and the previous ones were quite different graphically and gameplay wise.

I grew up playing the PS2, Xbox, and Gameboy Advanced. I am part of the "Current" generation?

And as for the "Stylized vs. Outdated" Minecraft never tried to look mindblowing, the graphics are a design decision. However, Morrowind, Daggerfall, etc. were made too look really good in their time, but that time has long passed, making them outdated.

I grew up with games like Daggerfall but I also spent the majority of my childhood playing the original text based Zorrk game. In fact, I still have a copy of it on my work laptop that I play during huge periods of down time.

I was born in '93. Didn't stop me from going back and unearthing all those classic computer games.

Personally the first time I played Minecraft, it reminded me of some of the Java games I played in the early 2000's. Think of Jagex's non-RuneScape games, like Vertigo and Flea Circus. Your typical low resolution, fullbright, blocky aliased 3D fare - Arial would be the default font if it were really oldschool. And then years later that's the comparison I drew when I played Arena.

I don't really see Daggerfall as looking that much like Minecraft in terms of overall design or something. Same thing with Might and Magic. It's the textures (walls, roads, etc) that remind me of MC a bit. Minecraft can even remind me a bit of a few old NES games simply because of texture and visible tile concept.

It's the inverse for me. The first time I saw Minecraft I said "Cool! It kinda looks like Daggerfall!"

However, I am depressed by the current gaming generation. Last week at school, I heard some people taking about Fallout. Being a Fallout fan, I listened but didn't correct them on the things they were saying because I didn't want to come across as an arrogant bastard.

One of the things that really got to me was this: "I preferred Fallout 3 over Fallout: New Vegas." Someone else says, "Yeah, the first one was better."

:slap: What?! It's called Fallout 3, you can't be 3 without 1 and 2 first! I bet they think GTA 3 was the first GTA game too.

Just like how people do not realize how Oblivion/Skyrim has a IV/V in the name.

Myself, when saw early Minecraft videos, my thought was "ah, Doom era textures..." Hmm...now I feel like playing some Doom.

I played Doom on a Sega 32X back in the 1994 days... Damn! are we old

No, no it doesn't.

That is really, really weird. If you look at the first link that was posted, I said that exact same phrase in a comment, verbatim. If I have my calculations right, I posted it relatively close to the time you posted here.

I think people should be careful not to dismiss the visual element of games. Just like the original King Kong film now looks ridiculous, it was considered groundbreaking at the time. I daresay critics argued at the time that it was unnecessary to advance any further, and focus instead on the story or characterization.

It's a false dichotomy to imply that because a game has good graphics, it must be lacking gameplay depth or a well written story.

Good visuals, gameplay and writing are in no way incompatible.

I don't see what's wrong with caring about the graphics in a game.
Video games have always been a nerdy thing, just like it's nerdy to care about how 'superior' a certain electronic device is to another, so I definately see the importance of graphics quality in a game as it contributes to the nerdyness of playing video games.

Yes, graphics are all fine and dandy, but it's when you start saying a game svcks just because it looks as Minecraft does that the problem starts. It's a game, so it's the Gameplay that's important. It doesn't matter how beautiful a game looks if all you can do in it is walk three paces to the right and shoot yourself in the toe.
