HAHA It looks like Ponies!

Note before we get started: This is in no way related to gameplay of Minecraft, so I believe it deserves it's own thread, should this not be the case, mods, please close this.

Okay well, here is somewhat of something I noticed among old games made in the 90's, specifically Arena and Daggerfall (From what I've seen). Any video about the two mentioned games with a good amount of views, lets say 50,000 more often than not has comments saying things like: "It looks like minecraft lolololol" has anyone else noticed this? Or am I just making a mountain out of a molehill?

Examples of what I'm talking about (scroll through some of the comments, you are sure to find some):

I think that's because for most gamers who started with this generation of consoles, their only exposure to basic 3D graphics is Minecraft. It's a shame really, when graphics are so hyped up that they can't see the hidden gems behind the more primitive visuals.

Weird, I don't really see it. Daggerfall reminds me more of Everquest, especially with the music.

At school when I tell people I play Minecraft, the most common response is "Why? The graphics aren't good." . I think that my generation of gamers is a train wreck, everything is superficial to them. The idea that they need to spend time and effort in a game confuses the hell out of them.

I also don't see it. Daggerfall had surfaces oriented at something besides a 90 or 180 degree angle.

I was 1 and 3/4 years old when Daggerfall came out...

Heck, my first experience with a Bethesda game was with Fallout 3 in November of 2009.

i hate the argument that graphics make or break a game
the story or the replayability of a game make or break a game

Because most kids these days judge games by how awesome they are.. visually. Great graphics = Great game. Minecraft is a rare exception these days, and as Narmy said, it is probably the only exposure these kids have gotten to these basic 3D graphics. When they eventually see gameplay of a typical 90s 3D game like Daggerfall, it's easy for them to make correlations between them and Minecraft because of the graphics.

And for those saying they can't see it: It's obvious really, it's because most of you already played games back in your childhood, that compared to todays graphics were horrible visually. I still love all the classic games I played back then, sometimes I think "Wow this game didn't look as good as I remembered" because I'm so used to the modern graphics, the graphics which many young gamers now are growing up with.

I think it's silly too when I see Minecraft comments on Daggerfall videos, but it's not that strange really, and I can't blame them. It's probably fun for them when they see the similiarities, and they may not understand that some of the older gamers might find it annoying when they write about it. When people however say stuff like "This game looks [censored]", that's just plain stupid.

I see quite a few of those comments too. There's an old saying that goes:

"Don't judge a book by it's cover."

People still play Mario 64 to this day for example because it's fun. Not because it looks pretty and is wrapped up in bows and ribbons.

I didn't play too much 2D games when I was a kid. Sonic 2 was my first owned game. So I guess that counts. Then I went to the 64. Didn't get a PC until around 2000. First game I played on that was Tiberian Sun my first PC game ever. It was amazing and 2D. So I did have some experience with 2D games, but not much. I was more of an early 3D graphics gamers, and the majority of my memories are with 3D games though they did look only marginally better than 2D games. I don't think I could play a 2D games these days. It would just make me want to play table top with dice and paper. Though certain games in 2D are exceptions.

I like http://i.imgur.com/y5IzV.gif better than http://i.imgur.com/XQFBF.jpg in most cases, but I grew up with fond memories of both. In most cases it's the art style that appeals to me anyway, not the technical stuff.

Thanks Gheart, now you made me lose my faith in humanity.
And "it looks like minecraft" aren't even the worst comments.

Well don't I feel really, really old. :sadvaultboy:

But yeah....I'd agree that it's the usual 'what you're used to' thing. If one has very few personal experience references of a certain type of graphic style in games, those are the ones you're going to use in comments. Same thing with movies:I'll see comments under a 1990ish film clip accusing it of ripping off plot/visual ideas from....a film made in 2005. :ermm: That sort of thing. Just the way it goes.

Myself, when saw early Minecraft videos, my thought was "ah, Doom era textures..." Hmm...now I feel like playing some Doom.

As a more enlightened member of my generation, I say the 'won't play games without sweet polygon countz!' stereotype is pretty false. I'm trying to hunt down the original Deus Ex and Morrowind, because of how great everyone insists they are. Plus, the nerds in my class play Minecraft a lot and I'm starting to think it's the only game they own (apart from one guy who rambles about old Star Wars games).

One thing I realized is that some games that look really good aren't nearly as good of a game as the ones with not as good graphics.

Cysis vs Half Life 2 as an example, I think in Crysis they spent so much on developing in the graphical department they forgot to hire writers.

I was playing FO1 not too long ago and my 12 year old son comes over and says, "This game svcks. The graphics are terrible." I replied with,"Boy, you wouldn't know a good game if it jumped up and kicked you in the face. Go outside and bring coal in for the stove." To which he replied, "Why, the bin is almost full?" and I then said, "For running your mouth and talking smack about one of the greatest games of all time." Then he said, "That's not fair." and then I said, "Stop running your mouth and stop sayimg stupid things." Then I went back to shooting raiders.

Twelve years old? Huh, I would be pretty bitter if someone in my family said that. It would breed nothing but resentment they get to laud their personal OPINIONS over me.

If the graphics are similar then there is nothing wrong with saying it, it's just something to compare it to (like saying these graphics are like COD graphics). However the occasional idiot saying things like "Wow Mahjong* should sue Bethesda for copying the graphics" then that is not ok.

*Intentional, I'm no idiot (I hope :P )

I wasn't bitter about it. Just pointed out he had some chores he still had to do. He ended up coming back over after his chores and was saying how bad the graphics were and how it wasn't like Cod's awesome graphics. I tried to explain it to him but my attempt at it was futile since he was hung up on the graphics. Kids today just don't understand gameplay over graphics.
