Same here. I was dissapointed in having to use a one-handed during the tutorial... hopefully no consequences were implied, beyond the fact that I would have been able to boost my main, two-handed skill sooner than later.

The character I played as doesn't use shields, and yes, this allowed me to invest in other things suchs as Smithing and Enchanting via their perks, and not having to worry much about using them all up.

One handed as they're much more versatile.

I'm a fan of the sword/shield combo.

But as has been pointed out, cutting out the shield probably does free up some extra perks for other things. And if you want to put those perks into something like enchanting.... well, then yeah, I guess you wouldn't need block after all :P

Buuuuuuuut that depends if you want to go with that kind of character. I generally like to keep my fighters "fighters" and get into kind of a role play mode, so I like sticking with the sword/shield combo.

Plus, the perks for blocking can be kind of useful. Admittedly I didn't perk ALL of block (never really had much use for power bashing, and on up that side). But what I did have was useful.

Depends on the character i play, In past games i have always started an Orc Barbarian type who uses either a two handed battle axe or warhammer. In Skyrim i started an Orc warrior who is using a war axe and shield. I like both types just depends on the character i decide to play.

One handed, but with no shield. Either DW or with just a sword.

I prefer 1 handed since I like to hold both a sword and an ax. Never like trying to block with a two handed sword since it just does not feel right to me.

I’m trying to decide which I want to commit to for my warrior. I’m pretty sure sword and shield is going to end up being better power wise but I care more about how fun it is to play. At first glance sword and shield looks more tactical and less hack and slash but you can block and bash with a sword aswell and the slower swing speed of the two-handed weapon kind of forces you to time your hits better. Then again one handed is much more versatile. Gah!

If you want to be versatile I'd say go one handed because you can get a shield and block or go dual-wield. Personally I've tried everything and I'm content with 2H Weapons. It's a lot harder to play as but with Thu'um and timed power attacks it's definitely the most interesting in my opinion.

Okay this is VERY GENERAL but:
One hand/shield = best defense with
two one handed weps most melee damage no defense
Two handed weps- a bit of defense but offensively you turn into a one hit wonder ( you'll want to take down targets in 1-2 hits moslty).
Spellsword ( my favourite) Versatile offense- no defense usually, but according to your play style, you can use a good ward spell, I just dont usually)>

This is very General!!! I repeat VERY GENERAL and opinion based but hopefully it helps your decision

I love 2-handed. I play several 2-handed characters in every RPG. As a bonus, the 2-hand finishing moves in Skyrim are pretty badass.

Like many others, I favor the sword/shield combo...so 1-handed with blocking.

I like one handed, I hate feeling slow when i'm in combat and I also like using shield to block dragons breath.

Sword and shield is a better all-round combination. It can even fend off also magical damage with the right perk. Very useful against high level magic opponents and ancient dragons. The one handed skill also determines the damage done while using two weapons at once. While I usually don't like forfeiting the added protection of a shield, it's very useful for the occasional stealth kill against annoying opponents when the opportunity presents. I always keep a second sword in my inventory just for that.

Besides, I found 2H weapons to be disappointingly slow. Even greatswords, which are supposed to be the fastest among those needing two hands, are too slow to be used in a frantic melee battle with multiple opponents or a particularly nasty foe
