I hate the Archmage Robes

Because player enchantments don't do [censored] compared to the arch mage robes. 12% cost decrease to all schools + 150% magicka regen is unmatched. For whatever stupid reason Beth decided the player cannot enchantment a magicka regen anywhere close to what robes come with in game.

The best the player could do is either two 25% cost decreases or two 12% cost decrease + 50% magicka regen.

You can do better than that by using potions.

Thats your opinon. Imo they look idiotic as the archmages robes look like a poncho with tassles. As I said I prefer the blue robes that the court mages have. Never mentioned anything about anime
What to say?
I do have better opinions than the rest after all.

The item itself is incredible. They just don't look right on my character. They looked cool on a Dunmer (Savos) but they don't look right on my very high-class wizard type Breton. I like the looks for Novice/Adept robes better for him.
Strange.
I play a Breton, but it looks pretty good on him.
Well, in that case it's best to look for a mod if you are on the PC.
I personally suggest Psijic Monk robes!

What type of enchantment should I use once I reach 100 enchantment on an unenchanted robe to get the 'closest to' enchantment to match the Archmage robes?
Well, the idea of all spell-casting enchantments is to increase number of casts before you run out of magicka.
Now, choose two schools you use the most and enchant your robes with those [name-of-the-school] + magicka regeneration enchantments (you will need 100 Enchanting for this and 5/5 Enchanter, Insightful Enchanter, Corpus Enchanter and Extra Effect perks).
This will give you a nice magicka regeneration and good spellcost decrease.
In the end, not good as Arch-Mages Robes, but still good enough.
You can enchant rest of your gear with various effect to make up for it though (and probably even surpass it).

I've been using http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=2733 for the Archmage robes. If your character is female, it's a definite improvement.

Very insightful, thanks! But doesn't magicka regen not apply to combat situations? If that's the case, shouldn't I use the double enchantment to work on a percentage decrease to casting destruction spells, then however much magicka I can add through enchanting? Then enchant gloves to casting a percentage decrease, a ring and circlet to increase magicka, etc?

I'm not sure if it's true, but I was running around with the birthstone effect that increased my magicka regen rate by 100% and never noticed much a difference to it recharging in combat.

Wow. So much better.

I ended up just using the console commands to give myself unenchanted versions of the various-colored hooded mage robes (like you see Priests and Court Mages wear).

I like the archmage robes because they actually look like they would be warm and comfortable to wear, and like they could actually be worn in Skyrim's harsh environment and used in combat. I hate the notion of mage robes having to be frilly, silky, pretty gowns or some [censored].
