Knowing that there are still people who are surprised when they hear of some injustice in the world makes me feel better.

oh, I almost forgot. Here's Generic BSF Reply 1.14 (Shocking news of some injustice or unfair sentences for minor crimes);

I am shocked and appalled. [Topic] makes me so angry I might actually take action to prevent this sort of thing from happening again (only if it's a facebook "like" or an online petition I can sign with a single click, let's not get unreasonable, you can't expect me to actually get up and do something).

I think the simple fact that a child can go to prison for not attending school under ANY circumstances is ludicrous.

The law is the law.

Ya. The law is not made for the exceptional. The girl is clearly some kind of exceptional.

Knowing that there are still people who are surprised when they hear of some injustice in the world makes me feel better.

Ah, well, you're welcome.

Can't say I disagree. Maybe it's sad that her personal life is so rough, but it's not her job to be supporting her family full time. Plus, she could try to work a part time job, or go to homeschooling, instead she chooses to go to public school soley for an honours that doesn't mean much of anything other than 'Yes, I'm smart'. Is it a sad predicament? Yes, but she's going to a public school by choice, ergo, she must comply with their rules.

Judge Moriarty told KHOU 11 News that he intended to make an example of Tran.
"If you let one run loose, what are you going to do with the rest of them? Let them go, too?" Moriarty asked the TV station.

Jail time? I can see consequences written into the law for missing school, but jail time? Really? That's criminal treatment, and what she did was in no way criminal. Crazy.

Well, I find it difficult to come up with creative replies to these threads since we have about a hundred of them each week. Also, why you felt like this piece of news was worthy of being posted here instead of something like... I don't know, that earthquake in Italy which killed 15 people? Or that new malware Kaspersky discovered and are calling "one of the most complex threats ever discovered". Or maybe even http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-18248841 - is beyond me.

Where's Sherlock when you freaking need him?

In all honesty I think this judge is just sitting on his doughnut atm because he's sore from a chewing out his boss probably gave him. There are times when a law needs to be enforced, and there are times when it needs to be bent because of circumstances. This kid isn't a delinquent by any stretch of the imagination unless they are omitting something. In all honesty this guy needs to be talked down to by his bosses again.

Sickens me that this kid gets a bum rap and yet worthless murders and rapist get out of jail because of "Technicalities."

It's 24 hours. You people are acting like he sent her to a maximum penitentary full of men only. Also, missing school longer unexcused than 10 days is criminal, ergo, by definition, she is a criminal. It's the same if a robber isn't doing it for greed, just trying to support his or her family, he or she is still a robber. Granted she may not be hurting or causing trouble for another, there's no excuse to slink around the law, you let one do it, and you find the cretins using that as an excuse to slink around the law. It's best to be firm about the law IMO.

I am unnerved and disgusted. This thread makes me so unhappy I might actually make preparations to prevent this sort of thing from occurring again (only if it's a twitter "like" or a web petition I can sign with one click, let's not get crazy, you can't expect me to actually get up and do something).

I do have words (but I'll only post the forum safe version)

the judge is only looking at the "letter of the law" & not at the "intent of the law"

You go to jail for missing shcool in Texas? Majority of my class in the polytechinic were not seen again after the first year, maybe this law would've helped with that

Intent of the law is to deter truancy. She could have tried to reach an understanding with her school where her boss could fill out a letter stating 'Yes she did come to work today', doesn't matter, she had no excuse for her absence, if it was excusable, any kid with a job could suddenly claim 'excuse my not showing up to school, I was at work instead'.

Is her personal life tragic? Yeah, but that isn't the laws problem.

Intent of the law is to deter truancy ... Is her personal life tragic? Yeah, but that isn't the laws problem.

I wonder if it actually deters truancy. And what is the point of deterring truancy? To get children to go to school so that they can get an education. She's clearly learning, and she's clearly going to school when she can. So it seems to me that the law with regard to truancy hasn't been finessed enough to allow for special circumstances.
