Health and Exercise

Post » Fri May 18, 2012 6:59 pm

Nerds often have the reputation of being overly fat/skinny, lazy, and unable to fend for themselves. Prove them wrong!! Tell me about the awesome work outs you do, or discuss and share healthy recipe ideas. I'd like to open the topic by reminding everyone that the benefits of simply standing and, even better, walking around every 20 minutes for about two minutes are ASTOUNDING. Personally I like to do squats at my desk, as they key to remaining strong and independent into retirement is the ability to stand up!! I've seen my Wife's Grandmother put into a home, and I simply can't bear the idea ending my life this way.

thought title said health and exorince

I'll jog a couple of times through the week, not much, just a mile and a half or so.

I'm skinny. Every now and then a doctor will tell me I should try to gain some weight, but I can't. :(

I'm 6 weeks into my cut, and I've lost an average of 0.5kg/week. Started at 80.9kg/178lbs and I'm at 77.4kg/170lbs. Still got a few more kg to shed. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13877155/gettingfit/tris.jpg. I'm aiming at getting down to around 74kg, and then slowly bulk again.

Working out is pretty much one of my few hobbies, and a lot of things I do revolve around it.

Believe it or not, Exorcising is good exercise. It's hard work, or at least the movies make it seem that way. Kind of like a supernatural electronic abdominal exercise belt with all the hyperventilating and shaking.

I do not own a car, or even have a drivers license. I ride my bike everywhere, or I walk. I am not a fan of walking though with 1 leg 3cm shorter than the other. My balance is better on my 2 bike wheels than my own 2 legs. Seriously. (I can brake stand while waiting for a light. It's good mental stimulation to, rather than just standing there.)

I try to eat better now that I am older, and sober. This has had some pretty dramatic results alone. I used to live eating mostly boxed and/or canned foods from the age of 16-34. If it took longer than 10 minutes to make, I wouldn't bother. (Lots of fast food to.)

I changed my desk from http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/jasonsteele/Comp%20related/IMG_0546.jpg to http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/jasonsteele/Comp%20related/IMG_0560.jpg and actually really prefer it now that I am used to it. The first several days, my legs hurt like crazy after several ours of gaming the first day I made the switch. Now it feels odd to sit at my friends PC. I did it because I was getting these painful pulses in my right leg (right at my crotch) after sitting for even short periods of time. It was kinda concerning really.

I was thinking health and exorcism. Maybe being possessed by a spirit is unhealthy?

I work out 5 times a week.

Used to be a stereotypical nerd that used to eat junk food and drink soda all the time, but all that changed in the 9th grade. I'm much healthier now. I can't be bothered to upload a set of photos onto tinypic, then link them here, so I'll just link my http://my.bodybuilding.com/photos/view/type/progress from bodybuilding.com. Mostly cutting these days as I can't do anything too strenuous because of exams. I only do LISS these days so I look more like I did in the first b/w photo. (With the jeans, not tracks, and longer hair.)

As for exorcisms, I don't take part in them too often, unfortunately.

Edit: Turns out it only shows up for members of the site. Meh, forget it. CBF to put any more effort into it. :P

Well, I kinda fit the stereotype, but I'm changing it up. I weight 248lbs at 6', though people say I "wear it well" and are always shocked I weigh that much. My girlfriend and I have started working out and exercising. Work out Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Cardio Tuesday and Thursday and weekends if we have time. We ran/walked a mile last night. First time I ran since high school (graduated in '06) and I still don't enjoy it haha. Maybe I'll come around, but I'm getting a bicycle soon and I would much rather go biking. I'm eating a bit healthier but it's kind of hard living at my girlfriend's house. Her mom quite enjoys cooking rather unhealthy food in huge, large quantities before I can get home from work, so not much choice. Hoping to be down to 220lbs or so by the end of the summer.

The only times I ever move are to briefly get out of bed to eat another entire cake.

I wouldn't really consider myself a nerd, but certainly a gamer, and I do spend long hours playing video games. Still, I'm pretty athletic, and I play soccer, so screw stereotypes. :P

Well I used to do rugby which meant a painful (literally) workout basically four times a weak. But now the season is over, and I won't do rugby anymore. However, I take Aikido and the old Japanese masters who train us can do stretch exercises and running somersaults that would put 20-year-old track stars to shame despite they're typically over sixty, so I'd say I'm headed down the right track with Aikido. :P I also try to walk at least 15 minutes a day, listening to music and I'll take up bicep-curls again in the summer.

Sigh... I really hoped that more than one person would see the play on words and equate removing fat with removing evil spirits.
I should have expected the grammar nazis... this is, after all, the internet.

OH well.

Defron, I'd say you should only gain wight if you want to change the way you look, or for health reasons. If your doctor says you should try to gain wight, I'd count that amount the latter set of reasoning.

Did you know Bruce Lee used to work out with headphones in, with one ear playing "zen" sounds, and the other playing city noises? He would focus so hard that he could tune out one side of his head, while focusing completely on the other. I like to consider ways to train my mind while focusing my body/spirit... have you come across any other techniques in your Aikido training?

I work out three days a week for physical training with rotc. We run on average 5-7 miles throughout those 3 days. We actually just did a twenty minute release run up bishops peak yesterday. Google it to check it out. On the weekends I try to do two sets of fifty pushups and two sets of a hundred situps a night in order to help me get ready for the physical fitness test.

I do running, aswell as playing football (soccer) which I love. I'm a pretty small guy (5 foot 6 in and 130 lbs) so I don't do much strength training. I focus on stamina, pace, agility and such which suit my bodyframe.

I don't know if I could fend for myself as the OP asked, but I sure can flee. :P

Sorry bud. Hard to resist having some pun with your title.

I tried to put on some weight over the last year, my bench max went up 70 pounds, and I killed the PT test (280/300) but I look pretty much exactly the same (130, never goes more than +/-5). Hopefully now that I'm back eating burgers and fries I can put on those 20 pounds I want.

And about the nerd thing, I think most stereotypical nerds are actually pretty skinny. If you don't get much exercise, you're not burning any calories, and then you don't feel hungry. Plus games tend to be distracting, so you've got no need to eat just because your'e bored.

Well, if you ask me a question in particular, then I could give you tips on that. If you ask a general question like that, one could go on for hours. :P

For diet, mainly cut out carbs and sugars, rest of the diet depends on whether youre in a cutting or bulking phase. For bulking, you may need some clean carbs. Whey protein shake after every workout and some cottage cheese every night for a casein fix.

For weight loss, either LISS or HIIT depending on your body type, mine responds to cardio better, so I do LISS, but for others, I'm sure HIIT is much more convenient as you'd probably end up burning the same amount of calories in half the time.

For exercise, I do dozens, and alternate between 8-12 and 12-16 rep range every few months. If you give me a particular muscle group, or even a general area, I could tell you what's more effective in my experience.

As for the pictures, I just thought it might be inspirational for others, as I too often look at people who have gone from a relatively unhealthy shape to a much better one, and it helped motivate me when I felt like giving up. And trust me, there were, and still are a lot of times when I felt like giving up. But you just gotta keep at it, and it's all worth it in the end. :P

How does doing push-ups/sit-ups prepare you to run? Or is there more involved with the fitness test?

Erginho
Soccer seems to be pretty popular, on the forum here. Then again, we're a global community so that's not much of surprise. When I said "fend for ourself" though I was referring more to cooking/eating aspect of health. If you wanna learn to fight/stay in AMAZING shape, you'll do like I did an find a boxing coach.

The Tallest
The only person in charge of your life is you! I can't make you do anything, but I can show you study after study that should scare the crap out of you. I made this topic, in part, to help inspire and motive nerds (like me) with new and exciting ideas to stay healthy and fit.

Dark Helmet
Apology accepted, that's really nice of you! Also, thanks for contributing to the topic. I have the same problem... no matter what I try, I can't get ANY bigger. But, that won't stop me from trying!!

Holy Assassin
Do you stretch? When?
Also, how long do you stay sore, or how long do you rest a muscle group before working it again? I find if I do 7-8 different lifts, each with 3 sets of 10 I'm usually sore for 3-4 days after...

I am kinda skinny but I am stronger than most people. I can bench press around 200 pounds, which isn't great, but its more than I weigh (I weigh around 170). I haven't been able to workout the last couple of weeks because I have tendonitis in my right shoulder from pitching, but I have been working out my abs and legs a lot and have been doing a lot of cardio. I run for about 20-25 minutes a few times a week, and run about 2 miles on a treadmill when I go to the gym.

It's broken up into three sections. Two mile and how many pushups/situps you can do in two minutes.

Who are we exorcising?

Anyway, I run a mile every friday and sunday and lift weights on mondays and saturdays (unless I have weight training at school, which I have on one semester, so half the year I'm lifting at school and the other half at the gym.) I'm 5'9" and have broad shoulders and large chest and weigh around 150/160. I think I bench around 190ish and run a 7 minute mile.

Actually, one of my best friends has 12 national records for track and came in either first or second in the junior olympics for the 400m. I also beat him in a race in 4th grade, so I feel accomplished :P

OH! That would explain the push-ups and sit ups then.
Do you ever do push ups on a medicine ball? Or use TRX? I bet if you did those on the off days, it would make the phys test MUCH easier.
