Does anyone not feel right making a high elf character?

No? I made an anti-Thalmor resistance agent (inspired by The Rising Threat) and enjoyed her game.

That's cool. I just didn't feel right. Since all the High Elves in Skyrim are like complete d-bags. The lady in Solitude really sort of edges my nerves. I'd feel more sympathy for them if there were more nice High Elves.

I'm planning a similar character at some point.
The AD is a repressive regime, not all Altmer are going to be on its side.

My secondary character is an Altmer vampire. True master of illusion, but I never increase his healh. Basically, he's dead if caught by anyone and anything. It feels good to be bad. :drag:

They're kind of hoity toity as part of their culture. Funny thing is, by running a shop in a Nord city that Altmer lady is on a pretty low rung as her countrymen go. But Nelacar is nice, and so is Faralda at the college, sort of.

There were a little nicer in Oblivion. A liitle....I remember that one guy who use to say "What" in that sharp rude manner.

You've always just had a thing against the High Elves though.

I find it hard to play any race for a long time that isn't a Nord. :(

Was the same with Oblivion too. Go figure.

I think elves are the ultimate mage character, and perfect for a good start if you want to be a master mage, I kinda stick to nords mostly, and yeah in the game, they do come across like upper class snobs, but I think its mostly defensive, as they are kinda despised by most of skyrim, so they bite first to gain the upper hand, its like i always say, talk a good fight, and you can keep your hands clean.

I've never liked Altmer, not in a single TES game.

Sure it feels kind of weird to play an Altmer dragonborn in Skyrim, but that is my main character anyway. And I agree that most Altmer NPCs are a pain to have to deal with, but there are a couple of nice ones running about (my character is one of those). I always wonder what brings non-Thalmor High Elves to Skyrim (it's obvious why the Thalmor are there). What fascinating stories those must be (for the ones we don't know about, we do find out why the Windhelm alchemist is in Skyrim for example).

My main is an Altmer War-Wizard. He's definitely my favourite character mainly due to feeling like the underdog all the time. It doesn't feel like I'm a despised stranger if I just play a Nord, this way I feel like I have to earn the respect and admiration of the locals. And the extra magicka and awesome power don't hurt either :P

I played a high elf who completed the stormcloak questline ... she had lived in skyrim all her life and hated the thalmor for making her race despicable. High elves are very fun to play as and the 50 extra magicka is the best starting skill IMO, the super fast magicka regen racial power is extremely useful throughout the whole playthrough too.

I made a high elf that looked like a dark elf hybrid and played him as such. He's a evil wizard who roasts alive all those snobby thalmor elves that tarnish his heritage :)

To be honest I can't bring myself to play as one due to the fact that I can't make a good lookng one off the presets.
I like the concept and their culture, lore (Thalmor stuff aside) and they'd probably fit my playstyle best (Heavy magika use), but I can't make one that doesn't look like an alien instead of an elf.

So I make do with Bretons, as they are half Altmer anyway.

Altmer are awesome. They may seem a bit... prissy, but they're not all "evil puppy-kicking overlords" that the Thalmor are.
I had an Altmer mage, Raina, but she got killed by bugs.

Glad to hear that because I just picked up Skyrim and wanting to play a Mage character the HE is what I decided to go with.

I worked a long while to make my Altmer female look good. You're right. It's not easy.

I already played through as the patriotic Stormcloak Nord. I had to travel the other path the 2nd time through, even if I hate the Thalmor and their arrogant, repressive philosophy. I want to be an elf out of LotR, like Arwen, not an insufferable [jack-donkey is censored here? wow!].

The funny thing is that I was already attacked once by the Thalmor, out of the blue. No provocation--in fact, I even helped them once in Markarth. (I felt terrible about that, but I'm trying to stay in character.) If they keep that up, maybe I'll end up a traitor to my race.

I made one and imeediatly made him a vampire. They look so creepy anyways. He is a vampire that came to skyrim to find a cure and hunt other vamps

I think I know what you mean.

They seem a little over the top in the "I was born your lord and master department" which undermines their race as it becomes more charicature than character.

Honestly High Elf is the only race I have never played. In earlier TES games (been playing since Arena) I was just more into warrior and rogues. When I played a mage I always picked Breton because I didn't like the High Elf weaknesses.

Now however in Skyrim I just have a real hard time figuring out a way to role-play one. About any other race I can figure out, but an Altmer, I just can't see it, not with the current politics in Skyrim. I am sure I will try one, for the first time ever (now that the weaknesses are gone), but I still haven't figured out how. To be honest as NPC's I always disliked them and the Thalmor do not make this any easier.

She's a lot nicer after marriage.

Your confusing Thalmor with Altmer. You might as well call every Nord a stormcloak while your at it. Look at an Altmer like http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Legate_Fasendil he joined the Imperial Legion. And if you look around Skyrim there are a few Altmer Stewards such as http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Anuriel and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Nenya. It seems despite the Great War the Altmer aren't suffering prejudice from it. Probably because many of those Altmer could have been living in Skyrim for decades or even a century.
