House Decoration

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 11:20 am

I've done this since Morrowind, and yes, I still do it in New Vegas, it can take patience, yes. And occassionally, the physics engine decides to just go "hurr!" and items go flying and fall through the floor, but usually, once I've put them where I want them, they tend to stay in place as long as no force is applied to them, except occassionally when loading the cell, really, though, the biggest challenge is often finding a good place to put them, especially considering that there is limited space in both the available homes and none of it seems to really be designed with displaying the trophies of my character's travels in mind, occassionally I have to improvise, like using bathtubs, beds or the tops of largeish, flat containers as space for displaying things. But I guess if I want a house that appeals specifically to players who like to do things like that, I just have to go with modded homes.

Yes, you might say I'm a decoration-aholic, and I spend a ton of time playing around with scenes. If you look at all the pics from my Schoolhouse Base mod, everything you see was placed by hand in game (even the shelves!) It's been an obsession of mine in FO3 and later in Oblivion. I even modded in museum like display rooms to display all the cool stuff you can collect and display in your trophy rooms.

Unfortunately, other than weapons, there seems to be s lot less quest items you can actually collect and display in FNV, so I'm searching for the cool stuff to put on display, but it's much harder than Oblivion and FO3.

Here's some more pics:

But I don't have a GECK or nothing so I could'nt replicate that..

EDIT: Also I find Misc items tend to look intresting sometimes.

No need to have the GECK as it was only used to create the actual trophy/display room. But everything you see on the displays was hand placed in game. So if you're playing on PC you could download the mod and easily set up your own displays!

Hang on, there's an available hotel room in Novac?
I never knew... Now I know what I'll do when I play next! It's worth a try, I miss having a "home base"!
Got some good ideas from the forum folk by just reading here, awesome!

I guess I'm lucky that I never change companions then... it probably won't be much of a problem really, but it could've easily been implemented.

I'd like to, but the few times I've tried I become too frustrated with trying to place items the way I want. Picking them up and twirling them in the air in order to get them to land rightside up, facing the direction I want etc. I don't suppose there's some trick to that, is there? :/

Ya if anyone has any tips on how to place items I'd appreciate it.

Well, lots of practice has helped me figure out a few things I can share. Let's take an upright item like a bottle of some flavor or garden gnome. The first thing I do is make sure I don't have myself in always run mode, and that I'm walking. I'll back up a few steps from where I want the item to actually go, and drop it on the floor. If it didn't land in front of me I'll move it around to be in between me and the place I'm setting it up at. Then I back away from the object until I can barely pick it up, and something like a bottle or gnome I grab at the top so when I start to lift it, the bottom will swing up under like it is supposed to. Then, I'll set it upright and release. If it's not turned facing like I want it I will gently grab it down at the bottom and a little bit by little bit begin to turn it so it's facing like I want it. Then I simply grab it at the top again and slowly walk it into position where I want it to rest and gently set it down. If I need to rotate it a bit more I can do that but you kind of want to grab it from the opposite side of the way you want to rotate.

Keep in mind though, that there are certain items like teddy bears and folded up clothing like leather armor that have insane minds of their own and if you grab them in certain places they will start twirling all around on you. They are very hard to place. But rigid items like gnomes, bottles, weapons and such should pretty much be easy to manage.

The last time I tried to decorate my house (Megaton House in FO3) I spent hours getting it just right. Then went off to do some things and when I came back, a Havok Explosion threw everything all over the house.

Now I just throw things in a container.

Am I the only one that spends time decorating houses with misc items and weapons, Like I can use empty shell casing and it actually shows the bullets.

Instead of the case box..

And I loooove decorating the houses.

Like in a bathtub, I filled it up with eggs from various animals.. Anyone else do this?

I put dinosaurs on top of every available end table and wardrobe in my bedroom in the Lucky 38. Also, when I get any unusual weapons I set them on the desk, or prop them against a wall, like Nephi's nine iron or whatever it's called. I have a mask, can't remember what it's called, sitting on my desk in the bedroom as well. I put teddy bears on my bed.

I'm slightly put out that the stand for the Snow Globes doesn't work. I'd love to display my Snow Globes in that room.

I never thought about filling the bathtub with anything. Hm. :)

1. I purchased an additional fridge; all food items go into the first, all liquids (e.g. scotch, whiskey, dirty water) go in the second.
2. All Colas and Sass's go into the vending machine, surrounded by Nuka Cola trucks.
3. The master bedroom has every teddy bear I can find sprawled on the bed;
4. All smokes and cigs go in the master bedroom main desk, the shelves behind it house trophy items;
5. Weapons, armour go into their respective trunks, wardrobe closets in the master bedroom.
6. Kitchen has all the food stuffs out (e.g. yeast, flour, etc). I make a point to grab one of every kitchen item (e.g. pressure cooker, spatula) just so the kitchen is complete with every possible utensil for display.

in general, I try and get -1- of everything for display purposes. Some things when dropped look really cool.

I have found certain items, even when properly moved into position, will always fall down upon re-load of a room. I was never able to take flat, rectangular items (e.g. picture frames from FO3) and get them to lean on a wall without it always falling upon re-entry. Same with other items, too. It's really a crapshoot...

Oh, Deathclaw Hands scared the heck out of me when I dropped it.

It's the actual body part..

I thought it'd be like just the hand.. Or a bag CONTAINING the hand..

BUT ITS THE FREAKING WHOLE ARM.

I put quantums in my bookshelf in tenpenny towers and I plan on doing it this time with victory and quartz. I also am putting money in my bathtub and dinky the dinosaurs in the guest bedroom.

I also like to match my parties clothes. I have a mod where I get all the followers so I'll dress us all in sixy sleepwear and authority glasses or in pre-war clothing. It's fun coming up with the different ways to dress them. I can't help it, I'm a girl.

Edit: anyone else find the giant damaged gnome.

Me too. In New Vegas I just don;t see the point, I never even go to the suite other than to change companion. I use the room in Novac, but still don't feel the need to decorate it with stuff like I did in FO3.
