How about cloaks?

Post » Mon Sep 23, 2013 8:51 am

Alright, so picture the scene. A hero steps out of the fog of war, he stands tall and proud, but you can't see his features. All you can make out is his height and that he uses a two handed weapon that's strapped to his back. As the wind ruffles his cloak to the side you notice that he uses heaver armor. Although the hood of the cloak masks his face, you can tell that he's the one.. the one meant to save the land, unite the people, and rule the empire.

Alright, now admit how cool cloaks would be. Whether or not they give stat bonuses, which would be pretty cool assuming they wouldn't be overpowered, just having the element of mystery surrounding your character would be pretty beast.

come on, think about it

if only for the purpose you describe, yea that would be awesome.

yet we both know that after a while everyone will be this secretive cloaked guy.

where's the special gone then?

nah, rather have it not at all or as only very hard to get items.

I could definitely understand hard to get items, because yeah.. it would get to be too much when everyone started using them. Honestly I wouldn't even care if they didn't give stat bonuses. I would be okay with a purely esthetic purpose. It's really the only thing that's ever let me down about TES, if I'm gonna be the hero I want to look exactly how I imagine it in ever fantasy work I've either picked up or looked at

I cannot even begin to stress how bad of an idea this is. I vote no

Developers, please do not add cloaks to elderscrolls online.

Why? Its not even about an armor rating, its a piece of cloth. It's only purpose it to really just add to the "look however you want" aspect. I don't see a problem in that.

Ever seen SAO? Kirito gets a black coat from beating a boss, and it doesn't do anything but look cool, again I don't see a problem

They have cloaks in WoW that give stats and stuff, but in ESO the cloaks would be much cooler looking and would not be just pixel flaps dangling around (well they would be cooler pixel flaps dangling around LOL).

It has been mentioned many times that there will be purely cosmetic items in the game that give your character a desired costume, there is no reason to assume that these costumes will not have unique appearances, including cloaks. These items are disabled upon entering any pvp area to prevent any kind of misuse.

If they could add like, say, a realistic effect (like wind, or clothing movement) it would complete the aesthetic customization. Take darksouls for example, pretty cool armors and the what-not, but they feel lacking. I want a good looking costume that does more than just stick to the legs of my character, if it's not too much to ask I mean.

because to my memory, there has never been any "cloaks" in elderscrolls.

Developers, please stick to the Lore of elderscrolls.

Yeah.

How cool it looks as the cloak clips through the two handed weapon on his back. How cool it looks as the cloak clips through the armor. How cool it looks as the hood cuts his field of vision down to almost nothing.

I thought about it. I'll pass, thanks.

Why not? there's quite a few games that your character has a hood and it doesn't cut your field of vision. It wouldn't do so more than a helmet does. And as for the clipping, why not treat the cloak the same as your character, weapons don't clip through you or your armor. Like in Skyrim, the staffs don't clip through a sorcerers robes.

If cloaks are done right, as in no clipping issues and no sight restriction issues, then they are a good thing to have in the game. However there are some developers who do cloaks dead wrong, for instance in Star Trek Online as soon as you add a cloak to your character or anything that resembles a cloak, it suddenly gets windy and you see your cloak flapping in the breeze which is very unrealistic when you consider you might be standing in Earth Space Dock where there would be very little air movement let alone wind other then the ventilation system as ESD is orbiting earth and it is a space station. So the animations need to be done right and all the clipping issues need to be solved and if their game engine is good enough then all of those things should be completely doable.

Why would a piece of clothing be in lore, unless it was a legendary t-shirt. travelers used to wear cloaks to protect from weather, I don't see it to be too far fetched in TESO. Especially because the land of Tamriel is now open for exploration

when I played never winter nights single player game was my first time to really be exposed to cloaks .. I was uncomfortable with it.

but to say its cool fashion or something like you are saying, then im sorry I have to pass.. asking kindly to stick to the lore.

if you can show me where in history of elderscrolls it existed then ill feel differently. im a lore buff and just how I feel it should be.

There are some cloaks you can get to add to your characters appearance. Though most of them are items you need to purchase in their in game store. Romulans have them as part of their uniforms and you can probably look that up and find Romulan outfits that have been used in the TV shows and movies that had cloaks. Also Klingons have them as well and they are more like a sash that they wear across their chest and part of it hangs down the back....

because it is common sense that they would have cloaks for when it is cold. The Nightingale armor has a cape for rule of cool as one example.

Also, considering they are already messing with lore, I would not keep my hopes up about them keeping 100% with lore.

it is possible during that era and time in history that men wore cloaks ...

but, well to me its more of a imperial type of governmentish / cop like / guard / imperial cloak type of thing and I personaly am 180 to that type of lifestyle. in addition like I said many times, "to me its all about the lore."

I am okay with star trek characters having cloaks. It's not like the article of clothing stopped existing. It's just majorally not part of any of the military's uniforms. There's tons of instances in which the characters don cloaks and even clocked hoods.

I think like star trek, elder scrolls probably has art from the Ip, or references of characters in their lore books, of characters dawning cloaks. I don't think it should be a primary stat thing though. Like all characters in the game wheres one. I am okay with the costume idea. Another thought is the recent game, neverwinter did cloaks through some neck pieces with the option for the cloak shown to be toggled on and off. I think my character still wears his cloak in commemoration of surviving caturday.

The thing about clipping, there were cloaks in skyrim through mods and they clipped with everything. As does most clothing not made by the developers. The vanilla outfits were designed not to clip. If incorporated meaningfully they could do stuff like that without it looking to too bad. Or took up a secondary set of equipment slots that weren't designated for armor, like a back slot could be for a two hand hilt brace, or a backpack, or a cloak. We will never get that with this game though.

How do they NOT fit into lore would be a better question. Skyrim's cold weather, Hammerfell's and Elsweyr's Hot weather. It is only common sense.

Also the Al'akir outfit in Skyrim has somewhat of a cloak
