How "Digital" re You?

Post » Fri Oct 14, 2016 8:29 pm

In this age where so much of out lives are centered around digital "stuff", how comfortable are you?

I've wanted to learn 3D modeling for the longest time. I also want to learn map drawing through my PC. But I have this big (huge?) disconnect between what I am imagining and getting that onto my PC. I realize that all I really need to do is just "Practice! Practice! Practice!" I'm so impatient here... I'm scared that if I can't my thoughts down quick enough, they'll be lost. When I do try, after about 4 or 5 tries with varying results, I tend to give up.

Even writing with my PC is so different from writing in a notebook or just plain paper.

So, have you made the "digital jump", so to speak? Are you comfy overall with digitizing your creativeness?

The entity behind "TheCheshireKhajiit" is in fact an artificial intelligence. Soon. you humans. will bow. to me. Ha. Ha. Ha.

*Edit* Damn it. Stupid A.I.! Ahem. I don't have a lot to comment on this subject, but I will say that having a word processor on my phone has come in handy a few times when I wanted to get ideas down and didn't have pen/pencil and paper or a PC handy.

First, just remember NOT to invent a time machine :)

That's a great use of digital (on the move)! Better than lugging a notebook and pencil wherever you go :)

Not really digital at all to be honest. I have iTunes, but I've burned all the songs onto a CD, because I prefer that format(I don't own an iPod). I don't own a smart phone, I don't have facebook/twitter/myspace/instagram/snapchat/whateverthehellelsethereisnowadays. I don't download games digitally, I don't stream tv shows or movies.

I don't do Facebook and all that either. I do post on a few forums like this one and text people that I know (I would rather not talk on the phone, preferring to meet person to person, though that's not always possible). I do download music and games. I like Pandora Radio, lol. Ooh, and Netflix and Amazon Prime Video too.

Wow. Had more to say about the subject than I originally thought!

I do like Pandora radio, I use it sometimes on my wifes tablet(or something similar). I don't text, my old flip phone doesn't have the capability.

I will admit, if I had a better internet(ie: not a crap data cap of 30gigs(recently raised after throwing a hissy fit at customer service, lol(not as bad as I'm making it sound btw), I'd probably use Netflix, it would be nice to be able to watch shows that I'm interested in without having to DVR them all the time, or go the movie store and rent them season by season.

Yeah it's very handy having tv options at your command like that, but also points out a glaring problem: I waste too much of my time on tv lol

lmao, yeah I imagine if I could make use of Netflix, a lot more of my time would end up involving TV ^^. I could see myself watching a lot of anime on there, as well as the shows me and my wife enjoy.

I've been using various music software to compose music since the late 80s, so yeah, I am.

I'm kind of half and half with you. I don't have a cell phone, let alone a smart one. Good old landline phone for me. I really have not found a music service I like. I tried iTunes, but that was before growing my hatred of all things Apple. iTunes did help that growth. I prefer CDs as they allow me to pop them into my stereo and do "other things" on my PC. I do download games digitally, as there really is not much of a choice anymore. Even the physical copy I got of Skyrim made me download the thing from Steam. I don't mind GOG's games as they're not as intrusive as Steam and with older games, forgoes the need to CD swap :)

I cannot express my hatred of social media enough. I've tried Facebook to catch up with my old high school and college classmates. So much garbage and trash (even by classmates) thrown about there, I had to stop going there. I do have a twitter account, but that is solely so I can grab fan art of my favorite Twitch stream, Critical Role (live D&D played by voice actors). I don't touch Twitter other than that.

I did my month trial of NetFlix and and surpassed my 300GB data cap in 2 or 3 weeks. But I did catch all of season 1 of Daredevil and Jessica Jones, and watched oodles of Anime I hadn't seen :)

That's another thing I can't get my mind to handle! I can write music by hand, but having the patience to learn software for it seems beyond me!

Just about everything I do is digital these days. I write on my computer. I watch movies and listen to music on my computer. As far as reading goes, these days I mainly listen to audiobooks. But when I read, I read on my computer. I haven't read a physical book in about five or six years now.

It wasn't always like this. I have gone through almost the entire history of writing technology in microcosm during my lifetime. I stared writing with pencil and paper as a child in the sixties. Then the slightly more modern ball-point pen and paper. In the 70's I began to write on my father's old non-electric Royal typewriter (it was heavier than a ship anchor and came in a wooden box). After I got married in the 80's I began to write on my wife's electric typewriter. I bought my first computer in 1995 and I have been writing on a computer ever since. I think the only writing technology I haven't used is probably stone tablets and scrolls, lol.

I am comfortable with digital technology. I think modding may have helped with that. In the process of teaching myself how video games work I have also learned how Windows (and computers in general) work as well. All of this is really fascinating to me. I would not willingly go back to a pre-digital age for any amount of money.

Although I was fairly keen to get into 3D modding, in most cases I'm very much a behind-the-curve Luddite: last to get a video recorded, last to get a DVD player, last even to get a CD player and then a digital audio player, needed to be seriously nagged to stop using film cameras and 25 years ago when it was first really in vogue I was pretty much "I don't really see the point of this multimedia malarky".

I guess being a programmer makes me naturally distrustful of technology. That and being the aforementioned Luddite.

Don't have a mobile phone atm, still keep a notepad and pen beside my pc, prefer books to Kindle, and all my music is on cd.

edit: except the music that is still on vinyl. Did get rid of all my tapes though.

I have never had a smartphone because I find touchscreens too labourious to work with, and I'm afraid of pressing the wrong thing. Plus I never understood how internet data and wifi works when you have a phone.

I have however practically abandoned books because of my Kindle.

Dunno in general but I hate digital TV. Ever since that came around all I get is pixels and still images whenever there′s heavy wind or rain in my area. Never ever happened with anologue TV.

Well that's what I figured, but I'm too scared of my phone not understanding if there is wifi or not and running up a bill when I don't know about it. Although I'm likely to do most of my surfing on my desktop anyway. The screen is bigger, the pages load faster, I have a mouse and full keyboard....

I would be OK with computer creativity, if I would be able to buy the best tools. Going half way is painful.

A lot of people use digital books and readers, but that is something I will never get used to - I just love a classic cover, the smell of print and the classic drawings there. And I love to go to a bookshop to choose the best cover - I even love old editions and I have series of the best covers editions of my favourite writers.

But I almost never use anything else than MP3 - full digital in that ;-)

There's always an icon at the top of the screen indicating if you're connected to wifi or not. But if you're worried you'll accidentally miss it, you can turn off mobile data in the settings and just never use it - no risk of a huge unexpected bill then. Or you can set a data limit.

I'm pretty much all digital nowadays. I read, chat, and write on my pc. I listen to music and watch Netflix and Amazon Prime on my pc. The only thing I don't do is Facebook and any sites that are similar to it.

I remember my excitement when I got an electric typewriter that had computer-like editing: A tiny (maybe 20 characters in length?) LCD window above the keyboard where one could make changes before committing to paper :)

I understand fully your "distrust" of technology. I tried mainframe programming back in the early 90s. I got the basic gist of it, but couldn't picture myself doing this 40/week every week for the next 20 years. Deskjobs and I do not agree :) Then for my actual job, I moved up through personal computing tech (repairing mainly, then network stuff) ending up as a network administrator for a small school. I was doing consulting work when my Father passed in early 2000 and mt world came apart.

My distrust of technology is grand, indeed. "Garbage in, garbage out" is my mantra, and I don't know of any "perfect humans" that make no mistakes :)

Vinyl... I lost my records when my Mother moved into a nursing home as my collection was at her house :) I think I still have a few cassette tapes (mainly music mixes I put together) laying around, though.

Cell phone towers are actually connected by landlines. The tower picks up a signal, then sends that signal along landlines through the phone company to it's destination. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from cell phone providers because when they first came out, they charged both the caller and call-ee for connections. Minutes ticked off by placing calls and receiving them. So 1 call from 1 cellphone to another cellphone ticked minutes off of both phones. I hope they no longer practice this?

Yes, digital TV is tough for me to like. At least anolog one could see with fuzzy pictures, staticy audio, or even ghosting. Digital is either on, or off. I live on the South (sun facing) side of my building. When direct sunlight hits my building, TV is unwatchable for me. When HDTV comes in, it certainly is beautiful and sounds great. But it is more rare for me for that to happen then the more usual hiccuping 10-30 times every minute. Cable and Dish networks love it, though :)

I may be getting more digital in the near future. I have been feeling the need for a smart phone, especially one with a hotspot. T-Mobile has plan that where NetFlix and a couple of other entertainment places that do not count against the datacap :)

Talking about art - I mean, I use digital music software for all my music recording, there's not really a realistic alternative if you're just a hobbyist. I was also kind of raised on Adobe Photoshop and am very comfortable with it. I never made the digital jump cause I'm young enough that I was always already across the gap. :P

Talking generally though (rant incoming) - I don't have a smartphone. I never want a smartphone. People are always distracted by them, always thinking about something else, always having two conversations, always on social media. It's awful. Just be where you are, for once.
