Go to the gate near the stables, a guard will stop you to talk... from this on, manage yourself.

if you talk to the guard he wants you to pay him but there is an easy easy check to get around paying him and he unlocks it.

Good question. According to lore, most Khajiit aren't even allowed to step foot inside city walls. So how do you always enter so easily? Better question, how can you become a Thane and own property, especially in the racist Stormcloak-controlled areas?

I RP my KHajiit to not be allowed in the citys. I pretned to find a secret passage and FT into the cities but must be in robes and hoods and avoid contact with all NPC's. Most of them only break into cities to rob at night.

Good idea. When I RP'ed my Khajiit the only city that was accepting of her was Whiterun because she saved it from a Dragon. Otherwise I would slip in and out of other cities in disguise while attempting to avoid the guards. I had a home in Whiterun but for the most part I was a nomad, sleeping wherever I found a bed.

The main gate, which faces north (towards Windhelm) should be guarded by two guards trying to get you to pay to get into the city. If, for some reason, the gate is locked, it is possible to enter the city through Riften's prison. If you jump into the water close to the secondary gate (which is always locked when you first reach Riften), there is a manhole somewhere in the wall, which you can enter. Follow the sewer you find inside, until you arrive in a prison cell. Pick the lock, and you're in the Riften Barracks. No bounty.

I never thought of the sanctuary of Whiterun idea. Good one. I also stay in random caves and inns outside city walls. I usually join the TG and rp that they provide me safe entrance to Riften as well.

That only applies to the Khajiit caravans, not individual random Khajiit.

I'd think Maven, upon becoming jarl, would welcome the Khajiit caravans. She's in bed with the thieves' guild, and the cats would be the perfect vehicle for disposing of stolen goods.

This. Also, if you look a little deeper into the so-called Stormcloak racism, you will find that they are no worse than Nords in general.

I don't know, I think the cities would still be largely unwelcoming even if they were allowed inside. It also doesn't jive with the fact that you can become a Thane of whatever city you want, even in cities where you wouldn't be welcome - an Altmer being one of Ulfric's top lieutenants, for example. Skyrim has all this interesting racial politics but none of it is actually implemented in-game.

Imagination my friend. You still have to have one, even in today's gaming world.

Isn't quite easy to get into Riften by sneaking in the waterway? I thought it was possible to both sneak in through the canol down by the ratway and also go up the pier close to the brewery. Maybe it's closed off there?

After over 400 hours of playing the game I just recently found out that the southern gate of Riften is usable. Since it wasn't possible to go through it the first time and there is another unusable gate too I never tried it again untill recently.

Haven't tried it myself but UESP suggests swimming to the docks and entering the city via the Meadery.

Could also try attacking a guard, yielding and selecting the 'take me to jail' option.
