How to improve Skyrim performance by 200% (FACT & TESTED

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 5:58 am

I had like 1 second mouse lag when I first loaded the game. Googled this up right away, fixed the horrendous lag and made the game playable.
I don't have Skyrim yet so I can't test this, but Dead Space had a similar lag issue caused by vsync, which could be fixed by forcing vsync on in the graphics driver control panel. Anyone tried this?

You can also disable Vsync through your graphics card's control panel. That's how I did it before.

I compared performance with this method versus forcing it off through the control panel, and it's the same for me.

The performance gain is because, as in any game, if your system is not maintaining above 60 frames (or whatever your monitor's refresh rate is set to), your frames will be cut in half. Triple buffering fixes this, allowing you to have Vysnc on while not getting the performance penalty when your frames drop below 60.

But beware, having your frames uncapped in this game will introduce the y-axis sensitivity problem. It arises when fps is low (<30) and really high (>100). You'll find that the y-axis sensitivity goes through the roof, even with a gamepad plugged in!

You can cap your fps using Dxtory. Once downloaded, go to the tab with the chip icon, and enable "Limit Video FPS" and set it to whatever you want to cap your frames to. You must have this program running in the background (minimize it) for it to work while in game. Also, EVGA Precision's overlay monitoring interferes with it; disable it.

Another note: vertical sync, even with triple buffering, introduces horrible mouse lag. If you want it on to eliminate screen tearing while not getting mouse lag, you're going to have to also cap your framerate while you have it on. Just set the frame rate capper to 1 or 2 fps below your monitor's refresh rate (most likely 60).

This advice goes for any game.

Aaa thanks now I understand what v-sync is used for, really good to know.

While doing this, I found this interesting entry:

GeneralWarnings]
SGeneralMasterMismatchWarning=One or more plugins could not find the correct versions of the master files they depend on. Errors may occur during load or game play. Check the "Warnings.txt" file for more information.
I can't find a Warnings file anywhere. Anyone else have the same thing?

I`ve had it loooong time ago before I tried the v-syng thing. Like from the 1st time I touched the ini-file.

Can anyone confirm that doing this doesn't disable Achievements? Cause I don't want achievements disabled.

Even though I haven't bought Skyrim yet and when I do next week I will disable vsync and AA because that has always been a tradition of mine when playing high graphics games. Vsync does give you a perfomance boost. Not an incredible boost but a little more. You guys should google vsync to learn the mechanics of vsync. I can certainly live without vsync.

Disabling v-synch can improve framerate, yes. For me though tearing is so terrible I have to have v-synch on no matter what.

All logic goes out the door with this fix. This will improve framerate, performance, whatever you want to call it. It doesn't make sense I KNOW. But as soon as I did it my performance went through the roof. I'm shocked.

TRY IT before you knock it.
Well duh, your frame rate went up... because you disabled the setting that clamps your frame rate to the refresh rate. It's not actually running any better.

I'm so shocked. I'm shocked. OMG I can't believe how much of a huge difference this made.

Increase Skyrim Performance/Framerate by 200% (Yes I know this disables V-Sync but why does it increase framerate sooo much? My performance went through the roof).

1. Navigate to your docuemnts folder - Documents\My Games\Skyrim
2. Edit Skyrim.ini in notepad
3. Add the following line under [Display]

iPresentInterval=0

...... Ultimately your Skyrim.ini should look something like this now:

[Display]
sD3DDevice="NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470"
iPresentInterval=0
[Grass]
b30GrassVS=1
[Water]
bReflectLODObjects=0
bReflectLODLand=0
bReflectSky=0
bReflectLODTrees=0
[General]
sLanguage=ENGLISH

4. ENJOY 200% increased performance. You're character will no longer feel like it's dragging along and the stutter, lag will be improved ten fold. THIS IS FACT & TESTED.

Thanks to Dnalysis & Battlemaster for help with this.

(Keep in mind I have 120 refresh rate monitor since I play games in stereoscopic 3D and I'm on NVIDIA video card).

I HIGHLY doubt that you increased your performance with 200 %.. If your double your pfs, that 100 % not 200 %

I'm pretty sure that file is only created if you get the warning. Considering there aren't any ESP files to have activated I doubt you could have got this warning.

Editing the INI file does not disable achievements.

All this does is disable vsync. Something that should be in the game's video options but for some reason is not.

Basically, vsync just limits the game's FPS to that of your monitor's refresh rate to help provide a smoother and more fluid picture. This can result in lowered overall performance and FPS though.

DIsabling it will free up some resources and possibly "uncap" your FPS, so that it constantly runs at the highest it can.

The only downside to disabling vsync is that you can get screen tearing when the FPS of the game and your refresh rate aren't synced - this basically just results in a "torn" picture for half a second. Some people are very bothered by this. Some people don't notice it at all. So if screen tearing doesn't bother you, then yeah, disabling vsync is a great idea to boost performance.

Protip: if you think this is giving you extra performance you don't know what vsync does.
Are you sure you know what you're talking about?
V-snyc not only caps the FPS to your monitor's refresh rate but it may also reduce the performance. If your GPU can render an average of 70 frames per second without V-sync, if you apply V-sync you may get only 30 - 40 FPS even though the setting limits your FPS to, let's say, 60 FPS.

All that does is give the launcher the specific message to tell you if you have two files with mismatched versions. So basically, if you had a mod from some guy that hadn't patched his game, and you tried to load it to play with your patched game, it would pop up this message box:

One or more plugins could not find the correct versions of the master files they depend on. Errors may occur during load or game play. Check the "Warnings.txt" file for more information.

It's not just for the prevention of tearing. Disabling Vsync in this game can also have other annoying (and even fatal) consequences. See this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1260072-items-flying-around/.

I'd rather keep my Vsync and Trible buffering on, thank you. I can't stand the screen tearing.

One other thing I noticed that gives a significant FPS boost, is changing my shadow settings from Ultra down to High.
I don't really notice a difference in shadow graphics but I get 10 more FPS.

Its doesnt matter that your FPS shot way up. I have 3 GTX 470's I can run the game at over 300 fps in dungeons and small areas. But then the weird mouse axis thing rears its ugly head. The only way that I have found to make the game playable is to use the FPS limiter that some guy posted to limit the FPS. its makes it smooth without all the mouse nonsense. Whether your running 60 or 600 your not gonna tell a diffference unkless you have a 120hz monitor like you do. Most monitors are 60hz thats why the vsync is locked at 60,with a 120hz monitor you should be locked at 120fps.

this works great.

I play with 580 sli and to turn off v sync is a big turn off to me as well.I use an 120 hz monitor and i use to play all games with v sync on.
For me this is just an illusion untill the svcked devs come with a 4 gb update for the whole game mess.

Think I'm one of the few that very rarely has any screen tear/other issues with vsync off. I've run with it off in all games for a decade. Except for Rage...that game has a serious screen tear issue for some, without vsync, even with current GPU drivers.

I did try turning it on in Skyrim after reading about all the problems people were supposedly having. I didn't notice any real difference either in general/average fps or screen tearing/other stuff. Maybe I'm just lucky. *knock on wood*
