How to improve Skyrim performance by 200% (FACT & TESTED

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 11:23 am

I'm so shocked. I'm shocked. OMG I can't believe how much of a huge difference this made.

Increase Skyrim Performance/Framerate by 200% (Yes I know this disables V-Sync but why does it increase framerate sooo much? My performance went through the roof).

1. Navigate to your docuemnts folder - Documents\My Games\Skyrim
2. Edit Skyrim.ini in notepad
3. Add the following line under [Display]

iPresentInterval=0

...... Ultimately your Skyrim.ini should look something like this now:

[Display]
sD3DDevice="NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470"
iPresentInterval=0
[Grass]
b30GrassVS=1
[Water]
bReflectLODObjects=0
bReflectLODLand=0
bReflectSky=0
bReflectLODTrees=0
[General]
sLanguage=ENGLISH

4. ENJOY 200% increased performance. You're character will no longer feel like it's dragging along and the stutter, lag will be improved ten fold. THIS IS FACT & TESTED.

Thanks to Dnalysis & Battlemaster for help with this.

(Keep in mind I have 120 refresh rate monitor since I play games in stereoscopic 3D and I'm on NVIDIA video card).

By increased performance you mean better framerate I presume?

Anyone else tested this and able to report if it does in fact boost your FPS? Not at my home computer at the moment so I am unable.

All this does is disable Vsync. That shouldn't increase performance much unless there's a problem with the game's Vsync implementation, and even if there is something of a performance increase the loss of Vsync hardly seems worth it.

All it does is turn off vSync, which will just uncap your fps. Your performance will be unchanged.

Improves lag? You do realize lag is bad, right?

Protip: if you think this is giving you extra performance you don't know what vsync does.

All logic goes out the door with this fix. This will improve framerate, performance, whatever you want to call it. It doesn't make sense I KNOW. But as soon as I did it my performance went through the roof. I'm shocked.

TRY IT before you knock it.

Actually, I have tested this and it certainly did give me a large fps boost. Must be a problem with vsync in the game. Could be ATI specific, not sure.

I think I went from like 40 to 60+ fps in the same spot (save location)

Wow, any side effects? I'm not sure myself what v-sync actually does

Just tried it and saw about a 8-10 steady fps increase. A mod should definitely sticky this. No side effects yet.

The only side effect would be very slight screen tearing if you go above 60fps, its rarely noticeable, especially if you don't know what screen tearing is.

Edit: my refresh is 60hz.

Confirmed fps definitely increased after modifying the ipresentinterval to 0 from 1 in skyrimprefs.ini. Anybody knows what turning v-sync off actually does here, I mean I didn`t notice any changes in graphics or anything?

Not just above. It can happen below too. And in general, the performance gain from disabling vsync can also be obtained from enabling triple buffering with vsync on, without any screen tearing. Also, screen tearing is easier to notice for some people than for others. I myself can't play a game without vsync at all for that reason.

If there`s no side-effects at all this might be the greatest tweak for maxing out the game on non-top notch pc`s. :celebration:

I had like 1 second mouse lag when I first loaded the game. Googled this up right away, fixed the horrendous lag and made the game playable.

Is this reversable by just removing the iPresent=0 text?
