How do you feel about male bosmer being short?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 6:35 am

Does anyone think the taller average height of Bosmeri women suggests a matriarcial society? Do we know much about Bosmeri culture other than they're humanitarians? On another note, I would prefer it both genders got a teeny bit shorter to make them a bit more more like traditional elves, and to make then stand out more as a race, I barely can tell sometimes if I'm fighting a wood elf or just someone with wierd skin.

Traditional Elves are a Tall species. Even wood elves......according to high fantasy.

I think it's great because switching to first person view and walking in cities is almost like looking through my own eyes, except that I'm even smaller than the average Skyrim Bosmer...

LOL same here, I think the Bosmer are even taller then me( 5'4) in Skyrim, which is why in Morrowind and Oblivion I always play a Bosmer I was able to relate to being the little guy.

Yay! So much bosmer love. <3

I'm just glad they haven't been reduced to comedy props as in MW or OB. I haven't met one annoying Bosmer yet.

Couldn't agree more! I always felt they deserved better and something more in line with the lore.

Awesome! You can really see the changes in height they've made to them.

I've often wondered that. In fact, I've often wondered what the reasoning was behind the height switch in the first place, but I haven't been able to find anything online other than a post by someone that claims to be responsible for the decision saying that she or he did it as a commentary on gender. What commentary, they didn't say. =P

Their ruler supposedly takes on the form of whatever type of person is most predominant in society at the moment, which could suggest a more egalitarian society. One of the reasons I love them is that there is still much that's not known about them, so it's easy to RP whatever I want. Pesonally, I like roleplaying that my character comes from a small nomadic tribe in the wilder reaches of Valenwood, where tribal leadership is clan-based and gender neutral, six is shameless and not tied to the marriage contract, childcare is communal and family based rather than tied to patriarchal property ownership, and life is brutal, war frequent, but everyone has a responsibility to the people they've killed in battle by eating their dead and adopting orphans they've created. (The idea being that if you have to be responsible for consuming all of the dead you've created, you won't be too greedy or prideful in battle.) ..All of this which makes her viewed as an immoral savage outside of her corner of the world.

In the past games, it was significantly easier to figure out what race an NPC was just by looking at them (as it should be!). I have to admit, in Skyrim, I have to stop and stare at someone to figure out some of them. From a distance, I should be able to go, "Hey. That guy's short. Must be a Bosmer!" or, even, "Hey, that woman is really tall. Must be an Altmer!" but I can't. I dare to say the Breton feel shorter than the Bosmer sometimes.

Edit: About the 'high fantasy' comments -- Uherm. Nirn != Middle Earth.

I can't say it bothers me because I'm not playing one. They're adding comic value, although they're not so sissy as they used to be.

I felt it was hard to take them seriously in the past two games, which was partially due to the height, but in Skyrim it is less notable and it fits.

I'm hoping Beth won't deviate too much from their own lore anymore. As many others here, I have a lot of trouble to discern bosmer from bretons or even altmer now that there's almost no difference in height. Isn't that why multiple races exist after all, to bring variation? Well, I'm glad they didn't add comic relief bosmer like in Morrowind and Oblivion (i.e. the meddlesome guy in Seyda Neen and your biggest Arena fan in the Imperial City). They became annoying very fast. It wouldn't be bad to see a short badass guy for once, that break from the clichéd cool big guy should be nice to see.

They were noticeably shorter in MW and OB, but I guess it's too much work altering stealth kill animations unless you like your bosmer slicing a Nord throat at chest level. Would have been cool if they hopped up on the victims back and then sliced the throat.
I think it'd be interesting if they added (or if necessary, rather replaced the old ones with) something like race-specific kill cams. I'd definitely go for male bosmer for a new character then.

Cant say i noticed them being really short. I find that compared to NPC's my character always seems to be shorter then them anyway.
