Ask your Steward to purchase it or visit a lumber mill and speak with the owner.

You might get free lumber by making friends with the owner of a sawmill. My character is friends with one he buys from, but cannot be bothered sawing it himself so just buys it.

I asked at the Solitude Mill if I could cut my own wood and the orc said no. I haven't tried other mills but am thinking there is no free lumber.

Odd. You do need to ask everytime before you saw another log I've heard.

Your pile of lumber always looks the same at the house if you have any, but you go up to it you should see the number of logs come up as a number. A lot of players would have made friends with the Riverwood sawmill owner.

Could it be getting delivered to your outdoor chest by the drafting table? That is what happens when you buy from a mill...shirley you aren't supposed to drag those logs cross country.

Hail Sithis...

Funny stuff there....

Once I finish getting my current character up enough to kill a Legendary dragon and build three houses, I am starting a Dunmer Vampire Lord. He is going to get the Master Criminal (?, the 1000 bounty in all holds) achievement and be bad, bad, bad. The suspense is killing me!

No, the logs are just a bit big to fit in a chest. They go the same place as the ones that were originally there for the small house. Logs are not that expensive, maybe it is easier just to buy them?

Easier but not as fulfilling. I want to gather all the resources on my own and build it myself.

That's right, it was just the quarried stone and clay that was supposed to go in the chest...hmmmm.

All I've tried is buying them from the Solitude Sawmill and the dude just delivered them. I was wondering about the sawn log pile near the homestead site. It shows a quantity of (2) but I can't activate it or interact it seems. Thought I might need an axe or saw in my inventory maybe. I'm playing an Imperial right now so I have a ton of gold to spend on lumber.

It's good to know you can mill you own logs at other mills, but I'm curious about how they get to the worksite. While the house quest doesn't pop til level 9, it would be nice to know if we can get free logs at an early level.

Just use the carpenters bench.

If you're trying to build something that requires "Sawn Logs", then it will automatically use them out of the Sawn Log Pile in your front yard.

You don't need special tools for this.

When you buy Logs from a Mill, it automatically adds them to the same Log Pile in your front yard. Delivery is instantaneous.

Right, step by step stuff here;

Notes:
-You cannot buy/saw logs before you get the plot of land for your house/start building.
-Sawn logs are NOT the same as firewood. You can NOT chop full logs with an axe. The ONLY way to do this is via the Sawmills.
-You can either buy 20 sawn logs for 200 gold or saw them yourself for free if you ask the sawmill owner. Unsure if some of them need quests doing first, I know that I just use Hod in Riverwood.

Using Logs:
-You do not need logs in your inventory, since it's also impossible. The sawn log pile by your house will NOT visually change, nor is it interactable. It is ONLY there to show you how many logs (Number) you have left.

Sawning Logs:
-As mentioned, sawmills are the ONLY place to get sawn logs, the building material. Find whoever is in charge (i.e. Hod for Riverwood) and talk to them about buying lumber.
-If you ask them 'Can I just cut my own?' then, if they say yes, you can get the logs for free.
-You HAVE to do this all yourself. If the NPC is working the mill too (Again, Hod doesn't seem to when you're using it, no idea for others) then you WILL NOT get sawn logs.
-You have to manually put a log onto the saw track, then go and flick the lever to set the thing sawing. Go and stand back by the log pile until the saw run has completely reset. After a few seconds you SHOULD get 'Recieved Sawn Logs (10)' pop up in the corner of the screen.
-You get 10 Sawn logs per big log sawn and split. It's slower than buying, but a hell of a lot cheaper.

There. Hope that helps clear some things up.

And do you think that applies to if we mill our own at a sawmill? It gets delivered to the pile outside?

Thanks!

Yes, it does. So long as you get the message 'Received Sawn Logs (10)' then you've got the logs for free.

no they dont, using a sawmill is still useless. it doesnt make sense why they dont let us saw our own logs to use. i thought they would finally make using the sawmill useful and using the grain wheel but they didn't...really beth? you need to stop having so many useless things in the game and start making them useful, especially misc items that are only good for clutter atmosphere

You just had a very good description of how to saw your own logs, how is using them to build a house useless? You can grow your own wheat, harvest it and mill it down to flour and use it to cook up some new tasty treats in the oven that comes with the kitchen wing. The grain wheel seems fairly useful. I tested it on mammoth tusks, still no luck, would not grind them down.

I suppose you were being sarcastic, but still, go make yourself useful and saw some wood!

You're clearly doing something wrong. I've got over a hundred free logs from the sawmill using the method I just posted.
