How do you get a job ...

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 9:00 pm

so according to my mom my resume is crap

I don't know how to fix it all Ive put is the co-ops I've done my time spent working in the school cafeteria and stuff like that, her reason of why its crap is that i was never hired any where

I would try going to a place that hiring in person except one problem my mom wont allow me a house key so I cant leave the house lest i leave it unlocked and un-guarded and has high potential of being robbed while I'm away ...

so how am i supposed to get a job ...

I've never worked before in terms of getting payed for it and i have about no skills in anything ...

my mom is really getting pissed that i don't have a job but there is nothing in my favor that should help me get one and im constantly being threatened with living on the streets

seriously dont know what im supposed to do ... should i sleep on the train tracks or something its abotu all im good for really

Tell he to get you a key, then put foot to pavement. Friends can be valuable as they can vouch for you at their work. Other than that jet a "no skill" job in retail or at a fast food joint. What do you want to do?

something that would hopefully allow me to move out with in a month if possible ... I've tried working in the school cafeteria for a co-op outside of lunch and found it was way too demanding for me to feel was worth trying for real ... retail might be an option but I'm afraid I'd seriously screw up on the register

Wow, your mom sounds like a [censored]. Seriously, she is complaining that you don't have a job and are good for nothing but yet she won't get you a house key so you can go out and start looking?

Here's what you do. Forgo the house key and go job hunting. Tell your mom that if the house gets broken into because you didn't lock the door that it's her fault for not allowing you to have a key to your own house. What a [censored].

It's tough getting a job when you are first starting out. It's a lot easier to get a job as a contractor's helper without training since most contractors will hire "Helpers" to do stuff. I started out in the electrical field. I was a gopher and went to get coffee, lunch then I drilled holes and ran wire and then eventually I wired simple circuits then complex circuits. If you can't find a contractor in need of a helper then try a store or fast food joint.

1. Resume workshop. See what is offered locally

2. There's plenty of tips on resume creation on the 'net, you may have some don'ts in yours or not enough do's

3. job fairs. Go to them

4. If you went to college, you should be able to get some info on job offers from it. If you are in college you definitely can. If you aren't, you still may be able to find some job offers on public post boards on your nearest campus

5. Call places. Call them again, call them after an interview (even if you think it didn't go well.

1. Hound her until you get a key
2. Go put and apply for jobs in person
3. Start small, like at a fast food place
4. Profit.

six with the manager of a store helps your chances.

Don't play picky, you're in no position to do so. If you want a paying job, and the only job is cow hand, you better get that shovel ready. When you have a doctorate in a field of study, and money in the bank, THEN you can be as picky as much to your little hearts content.

tell her that without a key it would seriously hurt your ability to get a job as it would limit your ability to go to job fairs, interviews, apply for jobs, etc as you would only be able to do those things with her/while she is home (or someone else is) instead of during the times when they are in need of being done.

How on Earth your Mum wants you to be responsible enough to get a job without handing you some responsibility by giving you a key I'll never know. Even if you managed to finally get a job despite only being able to go to interviews at her whimsy, what's she going to do - force you to stay at home if your shifts don't match up?

Build your own security system for your house (or just find a way to lock it using a padlock that you already have the key to) and then go on a job hunt, doing the things the kind folks above suggested.

Or you could steal the house key, make a duplicate, then plant it back where it was.

Edit: Or you could just stay at home and work online if you have the required skills. Or sell paintings, or perhaps become a freelance photographer or journalist that sends in their work to newspapers for a nominal fee. Or a bodybuilder, or a model. There are tons of jobs where you only really need to be out of the house once in a while, and not every single day.

I've yet to hand in a resume and I've worked in a large spectrum of jobs. To most employers showing up in person and setting up a meeting that will be face to face is much more important than a resume. In many cases for the businesses I've worked for they don't even read them, and would almost always prefer talking with the person and judging their character more firsthand.

That sounds very Splint Cell. Screw my 'six with manager' plan (No pun intended), let's go with this one.

Lock your door while it's open, then close it and it will be locked.

When you get back call her up and make her let you back into your house, no matter what time it is, constantly reminding her you wouldn't need her help if you had your own key.

You mean you only have a deadbolt?

What about your doorknob? There's no lock on the doorknob itself?

Why in the hell would she take your key and not give it back? Why the hell is wrong with your mom? Seriously. She took it after graduating? One would think that after graduation is the time to need a house key more than ever.

Not having a DL or a car is going to hinder your abilities to work as a contractor's helper. Most contractors have a van/truck that they drive around and go from job to job. They'll also need you to go get supplies and what-not.

However, if you find a large company that you can be hired on as a helper then you could "ride-along" with the lead tech. But again, he/she may not be able to pick you up at your house everyday so you'd have to meet him/her someplace to be picked up.

For example, in my line of work I am a lead tech (inspector) and I am supplied a company vehicle to drive around that has all my tools and equipment. I have a "helper" that I meet most mornings at a Home depot (when he isn't drunk or just being an idiot and decides to come in). He leaves his car there and I pick him up to drive to our job(s) for the day then drop him back off. Sometimes I'll pick him up at his house but I don't like to because it's kind of out of my way. I work on fire alarm and sprinkler systems and when I was hired 11 years ago you didn't need any experience because you got trained on the job. You could look into something like that. I know we now look for experience but my company will still hire non-experienced personnel.

My front door is like this. There is only a dead-bolt there is no "door handle" that has a lock. Its a fancy thing with a curved handle and a button to open the door. I kind of don't like it but it's fancy, and my wife likes it. But then again, we don't use the front door so I can't tell you the last time it even got opened.

I'm biased, but I recommend the military. It's hard to get a job out there these days, and I have a job, a place to live, food and benefits for the next six years...so good deal :)

Thanks for serving and keeping my sorry ass safe. Appreciate it.

But, something tells me his mom isn't going to let him sign-up. She took his key for [censored]'s sake.

I don't see why he would care if she doesn't let him, if he's 18 she really has no say does she?

True, but something still tells me she'll do something drastic to prevent him from doing so. She seems like a sociopath to me. But, that's just me.

if he graduated from high school he's likely old enough to sign up without needing her permission, although, the threat of joining up might be enough to get the key back
