How do YOU roleplay your character?

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 3:42 pm

Well, How do YOU (By this, I mean how do you roleplay your character, YOOOOOUR.) roleplay in this game?
And, If you do, How often?

I usually just start roleplaying when I see a good start off point (For an example: I see a caravan and then lay a trap with C4. I'm so mean.)

And it's usually not that often.. Stupid Caravan spawns.

I start roleplaying right away.
If it suits the role to take the tutorial quest then it will.
If it suits the role to help PG's then it will.
Vice versa for the people of goodsprings.
And if it suits for the role to just walk off towards primm then it will.
All depends on what kinda character I've planned out.
Just cause I know that there is a quest just over the hill does not mean the character I play for knows it, therefor I don't bring him/her over there.
So I let the character take control of their life.

All my characters have different personalities, beliefs, history and motivations, the roleplaying starts with answering Doc Mitchells questions. I often fail to not to "meta-game" with them, there is a unique gun there, so there i will go.

i do the same things, and have the same problems.

though even my "evil characters" aren't sadistic enough to destroy the town that nursed us back to health.

my favorite roleplay so far is my charismatic FOA member, who only kills when he absolutely has too.

FAO uniform most of the time and uses boxing tape as his main weapon (though he carries around a plasma defender as backup) .

I do a few things that people would do in reality if they were her. She'll stop in to say hello to Papa Khan when passing through his encampment because it would be polite. She'll go swimming in Cottonwood Cove with her companions to wash the dust and dirt of the desert off. She'll stop in to have a few shots with Cass when visiting the Mojave Outpost...things like that. :)

Well, my current character is extremely lucky, so I made him run straight to the Strip based on a hunch that the bastard in the fancy suit would be there. Evading deathclaws on the way, he made it to the strip, only to find he couldn't get in without the caps. He then marched on over to the Atomic Wrangler and got himself 5,000 caps.

Other than the beginning thing that I said, I usually only revisit remote places if my character has a reason to. For example: My character came across a crashed vertibird while he was traveling alone. He then thought to himself "Hey, I'd bet Arcade would be interested in seeing this." And he came back with Arcade the next day.

If I accept a contract I will follow it to the letter, no questions asked. No wonder my characters always tend to be neutral. "What's that? I came out here on a consignment and now you want me to run around as an errand boy before you help me finish the job? BAM! Now I can tell my employer that the job is done."

Through the characterbuild and decisions I make, it varies in every playthrough due to the situational decisions I make (for example, in my first runthrough I started with "against the Legion" mindset and went mostly towards NCR and Yes Man - yet I ended up finishing the game with Caesar, who wasn't too pleased with me up until the ending slides). The role is always the same (as in, I don't create concept characters), but methods vary.

I travel between all the NCR outposts, camps, strongholds doing odd jobs, cleansing the area of beasts and doing recon ops on the legion.

I find roleplaying in oblivion a lot easier though.

On my first character in an RPG, I always play as myself first. I behave the way that I would realistically behave (which is much more difficult than it sounds). After that I do whatever I feel the urge to play as whether it's a drug-addled psychopath or nerdy do-gooder. It's say to say however that I never play an RPG without roleplaying (and roleplaying is so much fun :hubbahubba: )

I'm the same way. I used to play a lot of table top RPGs and roleplaying was natural and fun because everyone was doing it. Roleplaying by myself in front of a screen just doesn't do it for me.

I mean to cast no aspersion on those who do, mind you. It's just not for me.

I never really get into character. I just play and enjoy what the game offers. At the most, I play good/bad routes, but nothing along the lines of my characters having deliberate idiosyncrasies or what not. But thats just me personally.

I'm incapable of roleplaying. I always do what's right and never take on another personality than my own. And no matter how often I play through the game I always do the same things the same way. Any tips on how to roleplay? :(

Three playthroughs.
First, do the opposite of what you would normally do. Second, think of a person you know (real or fictional) and do things as they would. Third, make up a person and do things as they would. Go ahead and write a brief biography of this imaginary person. Write down their beliefs, wants, likes, dislikes. Keep it with you as a guide. The hardest part is to not be yourself. Acting!...Brilliant!

The most important thing is to have fun. It is harder to roleplay in a game you play alone. My good character always visits his friends in Goodsprings when he passes through. He will give things to Trudy and the Doc. Buys things from them that he doesn't need. Clears out the coyotes, geckos, and powder gangers to keep them safe. Goes to Primm and hates that he can't help the resident who obviously stepped on one of the NCR mines. Little things like that make the game more immersive.

My character in the Lone Wanderer, who is me. So I roleplayed that the LW (Me) found an RV, got it back to working condition with his merc group, and set off for California. Little did he know that he would be stopped near Primm, asked to brink a package to New Vegas, and get shot.

Maybe these little things I do wouldn't actually count as roleplaying because I'm playing mostly as me but not entirely. They add some touches to the experience that I wouldn't do without though and I'm always trying to think of more. :)

Well, If you want to roleplay in one playthrough, You don't need to write everything down, You can just think of it as you go along. (I made up my person was a farmer prior to being a courier.) Once you do this, Start thinking about what their rolemodel would do. (Or what you would do, And if you are really nice, And want to be mean, Always choose the opposite of what you would think to be right.)

Also, Explore for a while, It can get cha' to make up some more stuff.

Or, Come up with a really vague idea, Such as NCR Sniper, Legion Supporter and once you go make the character, Add stuff to that person.

Limit yourself.
Plain and simple.
You can't do that then maybe roleplaying simply isn't for you.

Create the character, imagine someone from a film or tv-series or create one from the top of your head.
And when you start playing, forget about what "you" want.
It's all about what the character wants.
Does he want to go over that hill?
No?
Then don't go over it.
Does he want to use a sniper rifle to sneak attack critical everything?
No?
Then don't use it.
Does he even want to accept the quest for Trudy or Joe Cobb in Goodsprings?
Does he even care about the town?
No?
Then don't do it.
He goes to freeside where the homeless ghoul is.
Does he want to respond to this guy in a friendly manner or a snarky manner?
Does he even want to talk to this person?
Does he even notice this person?

Let go of your wants and let the character come alive with how he/she wants to go through the game.
Just cause "you" know that there is a cool weapon in that cave doers not mean your character knows it.
Just cause "you" know that this NPC gives a quest does not mean he knows that or even if he wants to do it.
And again, if you can't do that, then maybe roleplaying isn't for you.
Of course, there are always different definitions of what roleplaying is so if this post doesn't help you maybe someone else has a way of roleplaying that suits you. :)

Easy to do roleplay in NV, since you know nothing about the Courier's life before the Titanium Chip delivery job. You don't even know what age he/she is, so you can even make that up. I pretty much make up a back-story for my character and some personality traits based on that.

For instance, my first playthrough was as someone in her early 30's who had been a slave and escaped (via the Alternative Start Mod in FO3 :celebration: Yay!!) into the DC wasteland when she was about 17. She learned to survive in DC and kind of liked rambling around, so eventually she made her way west, found work that suited her outdoor style, etc, etc. So needless to say she pretty much loathes slavers and pimps and has no tolerance for other mean bastards, she doesn't steal from her friends, doesn't particularly like the ham-handed NCR, etc. Has seen some terrible destruction by drugs, so she avoids chems.

Subsequent plays have been:

Ex-raider in his 50's, bald and bearded, mean and will do most anything for a few caps, but very short tempered with snotty punks from the Legion, NCR, and various gangs. Drinks a fair bit now, and will use any chem he wants, so he's usually poor and addicted, thus the courier job even though he's really too old for it.

Sociopath Teen out for kicks-- why she got the job in the first place. Mom a chem junkie, half dead and stupid as a rock, dad a sick, sadistic psycho shooting pig so she ran away. Will kill anyone and steal anything. So mean she sides with the Legion even though she's a girl; Black Widow & Cherchez la Femme, cannibal, drugs, pickpocketing grenades for fun, etc.

I use a notepad to write down my characters background, personality etc. and I just play like they would. An example would be my schizofrinic (spelling?) theif. If hes in his 'scared' personality he'll simply fire at anythig that jumps out at him. If hes in his hard ass personality he'll be rude and violent.
