How do you unlock the high res textures for the PC?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 1:20 pm

From what I understand the PC is suppose to have high res textures unlike the consoles, but I see PC screenshots of console textures.

How do you go about unlocking the high res ones the PC comes with? Do you need to change something in the ini?

In http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1207390-skyrim-fan-interview/, 'Gstaff' claims that Skyrim will come with high res textures.

So where are they? It's not a rumor. Either Skyrim has a day 0 bug that needs to get squashed or it just plain didn't come with them which would explain the very low install size.

Which is also a bug, just one that will require a very, very large update.

It looks like most of the textures ARE of higher quality than consoles. Remember, the screens so far released are 1080p or even higher not barely 720p like on console. In fact I haven't seen a full rez console shot at all. They are all youtube videos and tiny, tiny screens.

As for the rest of the textures, I think that's as good as they are going to get. Some fo the material textures just plain old leave a lot to be desired.

Well that svcks. I am okay with that though because it is more about the game. I just hope they didn't mess up the controls.

It seems more and more often developers focus on console controls and do a sloppy job porting over to the PC, but I am not worried about Bethesda doing anything like that. I am pretty sure they have PC gamers back.

The worst is when they leave mouse acceleration in the game after porting it.

Kinda of explains the 6gig install now doesn't it, if they provide a texture pack it will probably be over 1.5gig.

Gotta say I'm rather disappointed with what I've seen so far, oh well.

There is no way the textures in Skyrim are higher res than 512x512. Bethesda games in the past have come with 1024x1024 res tex for "ULTRA" settings. Why on earth would Skyrim be at all different?

Disappointed myself. This is the type of thing that pushes me away from actually supporting the developers I love. Still a great game...and honestly I am at work so have only had 30 minutes to play...but it's really not that hard to add better textures...even make them good from the start instead. Heck make all versions at the same time...but instead we get console focused creation and the PC suffers.

I know. It really saddens me. It seems that no one cares about developing for the PC anymore. :(

Brilliant bit of thinking that is there. Really brilliant.

Yeah, what our platform needs are LESS people purchasing games.

There are developers out there who do care about the PC. Support them.

Bethesda isn't hurting for money. Zenimax is a huge corporation as well. Look up the numbers. If there are no hi-res textures it has nothing to do with money. My thoughts and opinions...but yes..if devs are going to start (or should I say continue) to skimp on PC gaming..why would I reward them with purchasing their games?

Which Developers are those that care for PC gamers? The ones that I knew about, Bioware and Bethesda..both have now fallen to the console demand. I understand the business side of it..but that doesn't help me to feel better that I am getting lesser games than I should be.

I'm not syaing support Bethesda, I'm saying support other devs that do care about the PC version of their games.

It seemed ot me like you were saying: "I'm never buying another PC game again".

I might have been reading too much into your statement, I admit ;)

Bottom line, we need more consumers and less pirates on PC for sell out companies to pay more attention to us.

svcks, but the sell out companies tend to have the more involved games, simply because they have the pockets to develop them.

I'm perfectly happy enjoyingwhat the indie scene develops for the Pc, and what the few multi-plat companies that care about our platform do, but I also care about games like this.

The mroe dollars we have to vote with, the more people will start to care.

In all fairness PC gaming is at a point right now were we could see it thrown to one-side,more as an after thought.

The 1 thing every PC gamer knows is..It costs money to be a PC gamer.
Times are hard these days and as much as I love playing PC games this summer I actually thought of turning my back on it and just playing games on my Xbox 360,I needed a new PC as I had upgraded my old 1 as much as I could over the years and would cost less to buy/build a new system.

After much thought I decided to get a new gaming PC but I can understand people moving to the Xbox/PS3 and why devs seem more focused on them these days.

We get(PC gamers)less and less PC firsts these days and I can see that just getting worse.
I love my gaming hobby and this PC will do me for a few years(maybe with the odd upgrade of parts)but if the slide continues then I will jump ship.

I have not got my hands on Skyrim yet but I am sure I will enjoy it regardless of some low texture items and having to use a UI made for a console ..but the days of PC gaming is becoming an after thought.

That was my fault, I worded that poorly. If a company burns me though, I won't give them my money again. That is what I meant. I bought TW2 and loved it..and even on PC, despite some flaws, was a great game. Absolutely GORGEOUS. See, their next game will get my money.

Bethesda's, I don't know at this point. And it's not fair to have to "wait for mods" to make a game what it should have been in the first place.

Still, curious, what are the other PC companies you say are worth supporting?

By Azura! Is the PC version really that ugly? Blocky, blotchy, too shiny mess. Yeesh, surely that can't be right?

They never said the PC version would have high res textures, they only said higher res textures.

The resolution is definitely higher as they said, but not a lot. The textures are far, far from high res. In general the textures are pretty disappointing.

This is very strange, I think. Shouldn't textures be made very high res from the start on the PC, then downscaled to consoles? To upscale textures give horrible results.
Don't Bethesda know this? Or do they actually like to have crappy textures in their games? The quality of some textures are of a 2003-2004 standard, which is ridiculous for a 2011 game.
