Infinite Quests in Skyrim

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 9:49 pm

I have just read an interview that says there are "infinite quests in Skyrim" (http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2011/11/skyrim-infinite-quests/). I think this is just THE coolest feature in the game. I was dreading finding the end of the game when my character has no more purpose. I look forward to never finding that day.

I'm pretty excited about it. While they will get pretty repetitive (there's only so much variety you can cram into procedurally generated content) it'll provide a good starting point for adventures when you're just looking for something to do. A reason to explore, if you will - and as the RS system prefers to send you to places you haven't been, it'll help you encounter new interesting places... which is the stated purpose, actually.

It'll help fill the world, too - while not important for everyone, some people found the previous games could be a little too undirected. Quests like these are certainly not "mandatory" in any sense, but if a player is feeling aimless they'd help enormously.

Not sure how this would work, particularly for the DB... Surely there is only so many NPCs you can murder before your game world is completely empty

Unless the quest spawns a random NPC for you to kill, but then where would they live etc? Well, the various inns I guess. Sounds like it would get repetitive really fast though.

Sounds very interesting to say the least, although I have about 15 hours played now I still wonder how this works out.

I heard in an interview that when you kill an innkeeper, the inkeepers daughter will replace him and hate you because you killed him. I will look up the interview!

Ya sounds awesome, now there will always be something to do, even for those who perfected the game.

If there is a hurdle to infinite kill tasks I don't think infinitely spawning NPC's will be it. The game won't run out of NPC's to kill just like it won't stop populating the world with creatures.

Right??

I was reading the linked article and it says, "Howard claims that the options are endless."

The balls on this guy :)

Endless options, really? Maybe it's just the philosopher in me but I imagine the options are limited, no matter how genius Bethesda is. The quests are endless, sure enough, but not the options for quests. Those have to be limited, right???

Yeah, I'm very excited about this. Procedurally generated content can really extend the continuing play value of a game. Even for a character who's completed "everything", I may want to come back every few months just to revisit them and do a few more Thieves' Guild quests, or whatever.

If that is true, that could be (to me) the best thing about Skyrim at all. THE BEST. The only thing better than being in the Dark Brotherhood is being able to comit murders for the Brotherhood ad eternum.

The color of the night will be Sanguine... for ever.

I know. However, the innkeeper's daughter is always going to have lived in the inn with her father. Skyrim would not have randomly generated her, and given her a place to live just because you murdered the innkeeper. At least, I hope that's not how it works...

FOUND IT! http://www.gameinformer.com/games/the_elder_scrolls_v_skyrim/b/xbox360/archive/2011/01/17/the-technology-behind-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim.aspx?PostPageIndex=2

Edit: yes you will never be alone in skyrim, even when you go on a killing spree.

I'm sure thats true but still, its better to have them then have nothing to do at the end of the game, and it would be nice to keep getting extra rewards instead of trying to sell pelts off wolves when your bored.

I remember in oblivion that by the time you got to the end of the game and you finally got all the gear you wanted you had nothing left to do. Now you never will. You figure 4+ guilds with a number of other quests that will be repeated after you have done everything. If what they are saying is true then Skyrim will have more than 180 quests because that's what Oblivion had.

Then tell me one thing. What would be better? The Oblivion Dark Brotherhood Questline WITH Story? Or endless amounts of automatically genereated "Kill Person XY" Quests WITHOUT any real story?

I really hope we get BOTH. But i'm not sure if bethesda thinks so too. It would totally kill the game for me if all or most of the faction quests are auto-generated.

Yes you can. It happens sooner, rather than later.

What if it was infinite hours until Skyrim's release?

Hahaha no not really. Sooner rather than later, you start thinking "Man. I've done this exact quest variant before. Same old same old" They'll only be good if you focus on the finite quests and the infinite ones just happen occasionally. Ultimately it would be best if the infinite quests kept on being created by Bethesda and released via patches. But that aint going to happen..

I am hoping they are adding this as an addition to their already epic story lines. To do it otherwise would not be wise as stated above.

I would bet a lot that each faction has a "main" story line that consists of quest types specific to that factions characterization and purpose. Once you complete the quests that REALLY define who the faction is then you get quests that just reiterate the main theme.

Or maybe the game is so subtle you won't be able to tell the difference :P

From what the article says you shouldn't. I haven't played yet so I guess I will see.

Anything to keep the place from becoming inactive is a good thing. Just random people running around is good.
