For the Americans again. Can you tell when speaking to someone, if they have an upper class or 'posh' accent. Is it easy to distinguish rich kids and the like? I know England has a very diverse range of accents for such a small place.
I don't think so, unless they do it on purpose. My uncle is rich and they act just like us. Accents typically come from certain areas.

A question to not America. Do you have commercials to join the military on TV and tuff like that? I can see why it is like that in America, but clearly not everyone's military is like America's.

Nope. Our military is essentially a welfare grant on stilts. There's no way we'd be effective at anything war-related. I wish we'd scrap the military altogether. It's an exorbitant expenditure that has no upside. We pay (more than likely, really dumb) people to carry guns. Never a good idea.

There was a recruiting campaign a few years ago that I think included some TV commercials. They had a little Flash game on their website too, I remember some forumers playing it back then. That's about it.

We've had them here in the UK for at least the last 20 years. They normally sell it along the lines of learning a trade while seeing the world, though the RAF ones tend to be a bit more action-oriented than the Army's. The Territorials (sort of reserves) also have quite a long history of advertising, though I haven't seen one in a while, probably because I don't watch much telly these days.

The airforce ones here are pretty cheesy. They have some high-tech thing and backeound then it changes to how it looks today and says it isn't science fiction it is the airforce. The army ones tell you when you join you aren't strong but army strong, the marines is about them being the few and the proud, and i think the navy is a global force for good. I don't know if the coast guard has anything though.

Not Finland ? But Finland used to be part of Sweden iirc.
Finland just happened to be in a bad spot, some 250,000 tribals between two superpowers.
Finland isn't geographically, linguistically nor genetically Scandinavian nor Russian for that matter. The term "Fennoscandia" is used to portray what you mean.

They are our "beloved enemies", but no real grudge, it was a long time ago. Still, a hockey match between Finland and Sweden is a lot more than just a game :hehe:

Wars against the USSR had more of such effect, but we're on quite friendly terms with modern day Russia too. Among older folks there is still a bit of that old "the enemy comes from the east" thinking understandably, a lot of people had to leave behind the areas that USSR conquered in the wars.

I think it's so that they can get rid of all that green beer..

ask Evilfish

The Dutch eat raw herring -but no other raw fish.. except sushi..

and double salty liquorice :yuck:

There's also the matter of the little Dutch kid going around sticking his finger in dykes, but Princess Stomper doesn't want me talking about it...

not classy enough I s'pose
Milt sent us some of that salty licorice and it is the worst stuff hands down that I have ever eaten. Well I didn't eat it, I spit it out. I still have a few and I can't get anyone to eat it. Every time I think I should just throw it away I think, "but Milt sent it to me". :yuck:
Why do we have thousands of active members from Scandinavia but as far as I know either hardly any or none from Spain, France, Italy or Germany?
We have members from all of those places. Maybe they don't talk about it or maybe they are over in the game forums debating. Rohugh is from Spain and LostInSpace is from France as far as off the top of my head folks that post in CD.
I have a question for users in America that's always intrigued me regarding age laws.

So you can drive at 16(?) but can't drink alcohol until you're 21, which seems a little unfair. How do you feel about that?

Over here ('here' being England) 18 is pretty much the age for everything. You only have to be 21 if you want to apply for a commercial aeroplane licence or adopt a child. And yet, you only have to be 16 (the age of consent) to have a child of your own! Crazy.
Driving age differs state to state. I am much less bothered by that than the fact that one can join the military and die for the country several years before they can legally drink a glass of wine. Now that svcks and it's flat wrong.
Meh, if doesn't get below -30oC it's not worth writing about :hehe: It's all about clothing. And supposedly us finnish people are pretty cold resistant Currently it's -22oC here, typical temperature for this time of the year.

That's what i love living here, winters are -30oC, summers are +30oC
-22 would have been so appreciated here the last couple of months. Finally today for the first time in I don't know when we have warmed up to -17 C. T-shirt weather now for sure.
Thank dike van Dyke for that one..
crap.., I wonder if he's from dutch origin? :ermm:

our underwear... boxers only though.
I would imagine with a name like "Van Dyke" that he does indeed have Dutch origins.
We build giant ice-arenas where we fight Polar Bears to the death, Gladiator style, to keep us warm.

EDIT: Yes yes I know that Iceland isn't a part of Scandinavia, whatever.
Wrestling polar bears is woman's work here.

And yes, I know your pain. Seems only Scandinavia gets attention for being dark, cold, having the aurora and being snow covered. The rest of the polar regions are just ignored. :lmao:

Im aware Alaska gets it, but Finland is closer, so would likely be cheaper. Also I assume Alaska has more things ruining, the environment. Dont you guys have loads of oil there ? If they havent already, then corporations will eventually ruin the landscape for the oil.

The Air Force commercials make me want to snort with laughter. At least the Army, Navy, and Marine commercials are believable. The Air Force commercial I see most is the one where they're dramatically rescuing some woman on a collapsing bridge. If that's an every day thing, I think we need to have a strong bridge funding bill for us

I see these ads a lot (we get a lot of UK TV stations in Ireland). The Irish ones are in a similar vein.

Every time I see one, I get the urge to sign up... They are very well done actually.

Yeah I thought that too, and when did we get planes that transform into different things. The one with the satellite is believable though.

Alaska has 424,491,520 acres of land and most of it untouched by humans. We have 12968 acres devoted to oil fields and pipe lines, gas, and refineries. We are home to the nations largest park, Wrangell–St. Elias, at over 8000000 acres and Denali National park has 2146580 acres . Those are but two of our 8 national parks, all of them larger than most states. We also have 119 state parks. The biggest state park is Wood-Tikchik State Park, which covers 1.55 million acres of Western Alaska followed by Chugach State Park, east of Anchorage, covers 495,204 acres. I've only talked about the largest and they are all very large.

I am unconcerned at this point with ruining our landscape. Add to that that population is only 722,718 and 279,243 of those live in Anchorage and you can imagine that we are almost entirely wilderness. I won't even go into how many acres are deemed wetlands and untouchable. I personally think people need to back off worrying about Alaska's environment and spend more time picking up trash in their own back yard. We have taken excellent care our our pristine land and will continue to do so. Oil is but a small part of the wealth this state has, we have a ton of gold in them there hills as well. And pure water.

My guess would be that Spain, France, Italy and Germany, having larger populations in general than the nordic countries, have their own online communities in their native language.
Germany also has most of their games translated and dubbed. So I think most of the Germans are in their own German TES community. Where awesome mods like Nehrim probably come from.

Same for the French.

I'm just glad nobody thinks we're important enough to get a Dutch version of the game with its own voice acting and everything. I wouldn't like it. I heard it's also very troublesome with modding. :ermm:

I'm not sure. I think it's pretty boring. I much prefer 1/4 mile drag racing...

 A geographic information system perhaps? Or maybe Cartography? I don't know, maybe you should come explore, maybe Nantina lives there. Maybe there is a tribe out there hiding and so it's touched. I don't have time to explore it all, that's for sure. I'm not even sure if I've explored my own woods completely yet. Think I have though.

I'm not to smart about how they come up with the measurements and don't much care. To me, it's just a whole lot of wilderness.

This is the answer, for the most part. I work in the GIS Field and there is tons of work in Alaska. And quite a bit of that work is aimed at conservation. So yes, trust GIS to tell you what is there, without being there. :ninja:

No.

It's a fairly big deal here, but we don't go as all out as Americans tend to. We have parades, but they're nowhere near as extravagant as the ones you'd find in the larger American cities.

Generally, young kids and families will often go and watch the parade, and that's about it. For people between the ages of 18-35, it's common to go down to the pub early in the day and spend the day drinking. It's usually a good day.

Very interesting, thank you.

I expected it wouldn't be as big of a deal as it is over here. But I assume that is due to commercialism mainly. At least over there, it is authentic.

To be honest, I find the tourists get much more into it than Irish people do. Most Irish people just use it as an excuse to drink all day (other excuses include birthdays, christenings, passing exams, winning ten euro on a scratch card, it's Tuesday, I found 20 cent in my pocket, it's any day ending in 'y', etc.)

Insert Irish joke here. :foodndrink:

I feel I should point out that there have been some pretty impressive (for anywhere, not just relative to that continent ) kingdoms and empires in Africa. Also, there's a huge range of environments, climates, ethnicities, and stability in Africa... 'cause, y'know, it's an entire bloody continent made up of numerous nations which each have complex, unique histories :grad:.
I find the ancient Nubian empire particularly interesting. They and the ancient Egyptians conquered each other a couple of times, resulting in sub-Saharan African (I hesitate about just saying black people, some folks here are rather sensitive) Pharaohs in Egypt. Did you know that there are more pyramids in Sudan than in Egypt? If I wasn't so lazy, I'd post that in the trivia thread.

They used to in the Netherlands, for all branches of the military. Haven't seen any in a pretty long time though, probably because they have to fire a couple of thousand people due to budget cuts. :P

In Finland army recruitment is made simple by shunning those who don't complete military service. It's unofficial of course but a conscientious objector or alternate serviceman will have a hard time finding jobs and in general may be shunned by those around him. Though in many other countries joining the army may make you look like a psychopath in Finland it's the complete opposite. Which is a good thing IMO, I think mandatory military service does good to youngsters and should be extended to women as well.

That's alright, Pokoyo did it for you.

To Englishmen... or members of the UK, rather (no, just Englishmen, before somebody gets angry at me for confusing my UKs again!): are you content with living in such small residences? Or do you secretly envy other countries that have more space in which to build more sprawling homes?
