John Carter

There's little actual information about the movie because people are probably expected to know the basic idea behind something as well-known as Burroghs's Barsoom books.
was it even half as popular as the harry potter books?

Are they that well known? I'd never heard of them mentioned anywhere except when I ran into it on wikipedia. I've read A Princess of Mars but I thought the film was still in development. Literally all I've seen of it is a banner ad on the internet.
Never heard of whatever that is. Nor this movie until now... I also don't have TV though.
Obviously not THAT well known, I LOVE to read books, am always looking for new reading material, and have several friends who love to read as well, and not one of us had ever heard of John Carter before. It wasn't until I read a bit about it on another forum that I learned it was based on a book series.
I guess I was laboring under a misapprehension, then. :P I'd always thought they were quite well-known.

In my own defense: I've never read much in the way of fiction.

It was okay 7/10. Would have been better if they played up the cheese factor like it was in real life back then.

I read the books about 30 years ago.
There was a RPG, Space:1889, inspired by the books and other similar books.
I don't want a trailer to tell me too much about a film, just give me a taste for the type of film its going to be.

Wait, there are people nerdy enough to have stars next to there name on these forums, but not nerdy enough to just know what John Carter of Mars is about?

weird.
I have no idea who this Carter person is.
In fact, I thought this thread was about Jimmy Carter just with a silly typo.

Totally. All the cool kids know everything there is to know about economic development during his presidency.

Get this, the film had a $250 million budget. It made $30 M on the opening weekend. That + the money made internationally will, if they're lucky, get them maybe $50 M in debt. They're screwed.

Au contraire, gaming and "nerdy" stuff is not all we talk about. Far from it. The community discussion forum has a variety of intriguing topics, that have nothing to do with games. It's basically a talk-about-anything-not-offensive-forum. Now I ask you sir, who exactly is this John Carter fellow that he is so important as to require my attention?

The greatest hero of the Red Martians, respected warrior amongst the Green Martians, and immortal confederate soldier.

I'm struggling to understand how this B movie cost them so much, and they spent like a fiver on advertising.

Edgar Rice Burroughs. A bit more known as the author of Tarzan.

Did lots of pulp-adventure novels way back in the day. Tarzan's obviously his biggie, but he also wrote http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Rice_Burroughs#Selected_bibliography. (11 Mars books, for instance.)

I read the John Carter books when I was a kid, and then a few more times over the years. They're fun, but not terribly deep... as would be expected of pulp adventures.

re: money & loss. The film also got 70m+ international. Given a few weeks, there's good odds that it'll make it's money.

edit: also, all the various "never heard of it" comments..... holy crap, they carpet-bombed the world with their film marketing. For, like, months. Not sure how you'd miss it.

Ahhh, well excuse my ignorance! I have up to now been unaware of a man who makes Napoleon, Alexander, and even Chuck Norris' accomplishments pale in comparison. I shall have to read up on my red/green Martian history ASAP!

I doubt it'll make enough money. They might get lucky with DVD.

Sounds like a character created after a long night partying, realizing that you gotta get the script for tomorrow and have to make up something quick.

Yup, it's called the modern film industry dude. Other masterpieces of this process include, but are not limited to; Thor, anything with "Transformers" in the title, any reworking of superhero comics, anything starring Adam Sandler or Ben Stiller, and last (but deifently not least in terms of sheer, stupidity, lack of imagination and a complete dependance upon special effects and scantily-clad women to sell it); Fast Five.

I know it may seem very strange but there are other places outside the US you know

In total It made $100,000,000 in its opening weekend.

Knowing nothing about this character of "John Carter" initially, my first response to all the ads being shoved in my face during television watching was:

...."Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz."

I have no idea if the movie is actually good or bad, but the marketing people for this film appear to have done a horrible job.

Before you insult my intelligence, read the post you're quoting.

"That + the money made internationally..."

Still, $100 is still $100. They need $250. That's a LOT of money.

Wow. I am amazed so many have not heard of this series. I have read every book in the series as a teenageer, and even had the SPI board game. Keeping in mind the times in which it was written, the books were simplly a straight out fun adventure and, most important to me, just basic good storytelling. I am eager to see this movie.
BTW, how is 30.6 million bucks and second only to the Lorax an utter failure?
