Can you join the Rangers and if you can, how down with the NCR do you gotta be?

No

I'd rather join the Bright followers and travel to the Far Beyond.

No matter how much good you do for the NCR, they'll always refer to you as a civilian or an outsider.

What!?

I want them to give me the freakin armor they put on the cover of the freakin game!

I know I can just take it, but I’m gonna feel like kind of a poser haha.

I know how you feel. I was looking foward to Gen Oliver requesting that i join his elite team of killers too. Maybe they'll add it as an option in future DLC's.

Yeah, this is a great game but that's a big miss. Can't join the rangers and you can't (unless you kill) get the armor they used for advertising the game everywhere. Whose idea, or lack of, was that?

I would hope they give you that option in future dlc (after they fix the majority of the game). Would be neat if you could join some other fractions as well maybe.

You're a private contractor in their employ.

You want to enlist? Most of the Rangers I've met in the game complain about being stuck at their outpost.

You can't have rank without duty.

They're not that hard to kill if you've got good weapons i sniped them using a scoped hunting rifle... Experiement

Spoiler
Theres an unmarked quest which is started by speaking to Ranger Andy in Novac. He'll ask you to check up on Ranger Station Charlie. If you look hard enough you might find some ranger armour when you get there. You HAVE to talk to Andy about it before looking though.

When i did this, it gave me Ranger Patrol Armor, they are talking about Ranger Combat armor. Maybe it was only Patrol for me because of my low level. idk.

Ah right, the only way of getting the Ranger combat armour is to
Spoiler
reach level 14 and have started the end quests where you pick a side, doesn't really matter which. Doing this makes the NPC's who wear the armour spawn at NCR Stations and the only way to obtain it would be to kill them for it.

I was disappointed that you couldn't join the NCR Rangers too, It would have made a spectacular set of missions, Having to take out Legion outposts and such with your fellow Rangers would have been very fun.

Instead Obsidian decided that the Courier would take missions to simply wipe out factions with no help from the NCR, Given by a Colonel who seemed to think that sending you to destroy a Bunker filled with Power Armour wearing Xenophobes for no reward was a reasonable assignment.

I'm no military general, but that sounds like wonderful return on investment to me.

I am curious why Obsidian did not give you the option to join the Rangers/NCR or for that matter The Legion, but than again from an early post I guess you would just be stuck on base…

Still haven’t finished the game (love’n it!!) but I was hoping there would be some type of option to join.

Only 3 words needed for this question 'Down Loadable Content'

Could be that you can join the rangers in some of the DLC that is to follow.

The way it's being discussed, what people really mean by 'join' is 'enlist' and I don't want to enlist in the NCR. Neither do you.

Enlisting means duty. Enlisting means superior officers. Enlisting means if you try to go off and do your own thing, you're considered AWOL and you might as well be Vilified by the NCR then.

If you just want the Ranger Combat Armor? Kill for it and get on with your game. It's really not that difficult once they start showing up at NCR outposts and bases. There is no karma loss and, if you do it right there is no reputation loss.

Don't you think it's funny that you have to kill the arguably 'good guys' of the game just to wear the armor from the front cover of the same game? Like, herp derp.

Jeez you'd think they'd give you an honourary set just for almost singlehandedly turning the tide of the dam in their favour.

Can't join the NCR, can't join the Legion - makes you feel like sort of a minor player in the grand scheme of things. You'd think the factions would be eager to recruit the biggest badass in the whole Mojave, but no...

That or give you some kind of honorary position as an independent agent and give you some kind of rank as well as the Ranger Combat armor.

Haha, where the hell did my old thread come from?

Anyhow, yeah its no problem to just take it, but thats not the point.

If I have to get the dlc just to "earn" the armor on the cover of the game I already paid for then I call shenanigans!

I found it strange you can Join the technology obsessed Xenophobic Brotherhood but you can't Join the two factions that apparently will take "anyone"

Would have made more sense if the Brotherhood offered to train you in wearing their armour but didn't offer you a place with them. I only seem to recall a single momment in the game when you can claim to be with the brotherhood anyway.
