If you see a second flea, you have an infestation. The longer you wait to take action, the harder it is to get rid of them. I got them when I brought one of my cats home (25 years ago). It took repeated bombing for over a year to finally kill them all. I haven't seen one since then.

Get readay for a never ending war against them. You'll bomb, think they're gone and just when you get comfortable, BAM fleas.

My cat doesn't even go outside and we bomb for fleas every month or so. They get on your clothes just walking through the yard, can jump through screens. Burning the house down is the only way to truly get rid of them.

I caught a flea hopping along my bed and I poured hot wax from a candle on it, the thing lit up like a christmas tree.

Only problem is there is now a small fire on my bed. Advice???

I hate fleas, and fleas love me - I'll be bitten 10 times while no one else is bitten - eg some people don't know they have fleas until I visit their house a while and the fleas start hanging out on my socks. I've had lots and lots of cats as pets from the age of 8. When they were indoor/outdoor pets, fleas were always a persistent off and on problem, which is one big reason I went indoor-only. They can also show up if you bring in a new stray (or even an old used mattress, ick).

There are pet treatments these days (Frontline?) that might help if they go outside, but that's something you have to keep up with. There's flea bath shampoo's, which you may have to bathe several times if it's bad. Wash the bedding, get new pet-bed bedding if applicable, vacuum thoroughly etc.

Also ... I haven't used "bombs" per se in a long time. It works. I swear. One time the carpet was infested when I brought in strays and I used this spray ( a few cans around the house), and they were gone. Literally gone. No more flea ankle bites. I've used it ever since at the first sign (not often these days) and haven't had flea bites in the house in years. The stuff isn't "safe" but it's safer than a bomb that gets everywhere, with no cleanup and don't have to stay away from the house for hours.

If you do bomb or use sprays, and you have pet birds, make sure they're out of the house before you start. Insecticides are extremely lethal to birds - exposure to even a small amount can kill them very quickly.

Also, if you have an aquarium, it would be good idea to cover that as well. Some insecticides are water soluble, and they kill fish if enough gets absorbed into the water.

But the fire has been dealt with, don't worry.

I would have suggested using your built in water hose to extinguish the flames.

Probably the same with small rodents like hamsters. I always took the rodent cages into the garage for a couple hours.

Also, since I have indoor-only cats, I would put them all in a single room w/windows open/door shut, spray the rest of the house, vacuum like mad after 30 minutes, then after another hour or so, let the cats out and finish via spraying that room.
