I just caught a flea on my bed- What do I do?

Post » Tue Sep 10, 2013 10:50 am

Okay guys, first things first, I HATE fleas.

I just caught a flea jumping up at me whilst I was on my laptop and I frantically skedaddled and retreated to my roommates room. What should I do? I'm thinking I should burn the bed, just to make sure, but i'd rather not.

I'd fumigate, call an exterminator, or...

...down to the foundation, then salt the earth and leave totems as warnings to those that may stumble across it.

Are you sure?

I guess it would get rid of the fleas, maybe I should try it.

No, just get a couple flea bombs, set them around the house/apartment, set them off, and leave for a few hours. Don't burn anything.

I don't have any flea bombs.

I seriously think that torching the bed is the only option right now.

Finely chop some garlic, onion, carrot and celery.

Using a heavy-bottom frying pan, heat some oil to medium and fry the ingredients except the garlic; after about 10 minutes, reduce the heat to low and add the garlic. Stir in about half a tin of chopped tomatoes and add some chicken stock. Season to taste.

Add the flea.

Serve with basmati rice.

So, spend several $100 to replace the bed, versus $20 in flea bombs. Hmmmmmm.

Just remember, in order to avoid spreading the fleas, you'll have to burn the bed in-place. You might as well burn everything in the room. If you're burning the room, why not make sure and torch the entire structure?

Most grocery stores (right next to the hornet spray).

If they're in your bedroom, they're in the entire house/apartment. Bomb the whole thing, launder all your clothes and linens, plan on repeating it a few months later.

While playing new age recordings of whale song, train the flea to be a beast of burden.

When you have succeeded in your endeavour, use the flea to hitch a ride to Balmora. Once there, loudly proclaim that sujamma is the drink of hairy nords with body odour and you want a decent beer. Your evening should be entertaining.

Do you have pets? If you do, chances are that they have quite a few fleas and are likely the source, especially if they go outside regularly. If they're scratching themselves constantly, they almost certainly have fleas. If they have light colored coats, you'll be able to examine them closely and see fleas crawling on them.

You'll need to treat them to get rid of the fleas, or the fleas will just come back. Flea collars are a waste of money - they don't do anything. The best method for controlling fleas on pets is medications such as Frontline or Advantage. However, you'll have to get them prescriptions for these from your vet, and they can get expensive. Other than that, there are plenty of flea and tick shampoos and powders that can be used to help control fleas.

Oh good, it's not a mice thread. But why did everyone's homes get infested with critters all of a sudden?

I have a dog and two cats, maybe it was then?

Should I expel them from my house (temporarily)?

Don't panic.

*Thoroughly wash all your bedding.

*Vacuum thoroughly.

*Treat your dog and cat with Advantage from the Pet Store/vet ensuring that you have the correct strength for your pet's weight.

*Thoroughly wash and clean their beds out and all areas that your pets sleep, lie etc...

*You can treat carpets with flea powder and then vacuum it up.

*You would only use flea bombs if you were certain that you had a very bad infestation. You've seen one flea...

Please don't just chuck your pets out of your house, there is no need for that. However do not let them on your bed or furniture.

If your going to do a Flea Bomb, don't over look the egg cycle. You need to Flea Bomb every 10 days, probably repeat this 3 times, as the eggs are not killed by the flea bomb.

It gets even better. If you have carpeting, fleas will lay their eggs in it. Of course, when the eggs hatch, you have more fleas. You may need to get flea powder to treat the carpets as well.

To the OP - don't kick the animals out of the house. You need to treat them to get rid of the fleas. If you're freaking out about seeing one flea in your bed, imagine how miserable they are with dozens crawling all over them and biting them all the time. If you're going to keep pets, flea control is something you have to accept and deal with.

One flea people...ONE flea. Do NOT use flea bombs unless you are certain you have a very bad infestation. Clean up like I listed above and treat your pets. But first, check your pets to see if they actually have fleas. That one flea could have come in on a pet and hopped off. When lookin over your pet you are looking for flea 'dirt', black tiny bits that look like dirt, usually found on inner thighs and stomach of pet. And of course actual fleas.

I have had dogs all my life and yes on rare occassion had fleas in the house. You clean and treat and it is fine.
