Keyboard vs. Gamepad

Post » Sat Dec 17, 2011 12:02 am

Hello All...I have the exact opposite problem as yours. I'm a long time pc player and very comfortable with the mouse and keyboard. I just can't get in sync with the game controller, I mean I'm all over the place with it, lol. Ill just have to practice and get used to it I suppose.. Anyway, what a game huh?? I love this one. I can rack up hours of play before I realize that hours have flew by. Take care all......

I'm much more comfortable with K&M now, so I plan to stick with it. UI mods will fix the abysmal vanilla UI designed for consoles eventually, but I've gotten pretty used to it after 170 hrs.

Also, no vs. threads :D

The hotkey system for Skyrim is so terribly clunky that I don't put it as a win in the mouse and keyboard column. I don't see how movement could possibly be more fluid on a pad though. The only games pads have a movement advantage in are fighters, hack and slash and sports.

This game was designed for a controller, I play with one on PC, despite always playing ES games with M+K.

1) Because when I first played the game, the dumb tooltips didn't update with my updated keymapping.
2) the control scheme had changed from previous ES games, so it was tricker to get a comfortable map
3) the menus! work so much better with a control pad, with the exception of dropping specific amounts of gold, which requires scrooooolllliiiing.

Unfortunately, controller, but it is very comfortable.

Just annoys me, that bethesda didn't put as much effort into M+K then we were led to believe.

bind shouts to another key, one that you find more easily.

Well, I must admit that after 15 years of die-hard PC use of keyboard and mouse (and die-hard dislike of gamepads), I have resorted to using the XBox 360 Controller for this game.

Just to be clear though, it's not because of the gameplay controls themselves, which are fine, but rather the absolutely pig-awful support in the game's various UIs for keyboard and mouse. It's a terrible shame in my opinion. Skyrim is the first game that's forced me to do this, and I think it's a sign of the times that M&KB support is fading in favour of the consoles.

As much as I have tried to like it, I just can't get used to using the keyboard playing this game. For the record, I am a new PC player and coming from a long history of playing on consoles. No matter how hard I try, the keyboard is just clunky and hard for me to use. I love the advantages of the keyboard (hotkeys are great for a game like this), and the precision/control of the mouse is so much better than my xbox controller. However, when the action gets going I just can't get used to WASD. My fingers just refuse to be able to reliably find the Z key for the shouts as well.

So, with reluctance, I am going back to the controller. Sorry mouse, as much as I want to prefer using you, I just can't do it.

Any other console converts having this problem?

Practice.

I made the same transition once, and it is difficult to get used to, but eventually you'll be wondering how the hell you coped without it.

I got my first gaming PC when I got into Morrowind. (Moving from the Xbox.) I too found KB/M clunky for the first bit, but that is to be expected. Like anything, it takes time to learn then master something.

The best advice I can give you is keep at it! It does get better! Once you get the feel, you'll be so glad you did.

I can use both, but much prefer the KB/M. Mouse simply can't be beat in mob battles.

Good luck and don't give up!

I've been using arrow keys for FPS games since Wolfenstein, and well Skyrim finally made a WASD user of me. With over 100 hrs game time, WASD seems like the only way to play now.

Which mod is this? I might give it a swing.

The three mods below bring the keyboard+mouse back to life. Just the shouts/spell hotkeys is enough. The remapping is up to you. IMO those mods make the keyboard+mouse a better option over the game pad. Significantly reduces the use of the menu function.

I have the opposite problem, I can't stand gamepads. In fact the lack of keyboard and mouse suppose on consoles is the primary reason I stay away from them.
Same here. I have joysticks and game-pads, but I only use them with animation plugins for certain 3d software ~or aerial combat games, nothing else.

I just switched from PS3 to PC. Lockpicking is much easier in PC! Much more accurate, and fewer broken picks. Otherwise the keyboard setup is confusing to a still console gaming player.

Consoles do both worse. I am confused how kids these days are "brought up" with only console use. PCs aren't relics here. Being the first generation of gamer, we grew up with ONLY consoles really. You had your Apple II and Ultima and what not, but there was a big difference between the two platforms. Now, the only difference are really the input devices (and the fact my PC has 100 times more capabilities than a console, despite me being able to stream Netflix etc on my console). I grew up with consoles. When PC gaming got big, for FPS games or RTS games, the only way to go was PC. For Action Adventure games and Racing games and what not, sure consoles are great with controllers. I am simply amazed why people do not prefer PC over consoles in almost every single situation.

Played Oblivion with a keyboard, and Skyrim with a controller. Both have their merits, but for me the controller wins out for ease of use, as opposed to THE CLAW employed by my left hand when playing TES on the PC.

Playing on my PC with a PS3 controller. Plus I get to sit on my couch vs sitting at my desk.

Same problem for me. I'm considering hooking up the 360 controller to my PC. Anyone else doing this?

Yup, Sneaking is much easier with anologue stick, as are movement speed changes, and as this is not an online FPS the accuracy of the mouse is not really needed.

Also the UI is much easier to navigate on the controller.

Only thing i miss is hotkeys (you only get two on a controller)

I'm acutally quite enjoying the standard keyboard settings. With one expection though, the hot keys, 1-8, are way too few. Is there any way you could increase the number of hotkeys? Maybe a mod?

I think movement is much easier with K+M. It's not really wasd, it's more w + mouse for the most part. I just use asd to move around in combat- a and d are not turning keys, but strafing keys. For traveling though, it's just w, and make little turns with the mouse. Actually in PC, you can just hit "c", and auto-run, so you don't even have to hold down w.

I guess maybe I'm just used to using mouse and keyboard (mouse mostly, but it translates pretty easily) from playing MMOs for so long.

is anybody using a gamepad like the Logitech G13? Been using K+M so far but debating programming my G13 for this game
and was wondering if anyone has been using one and what results they were getting.

Hooking up my Xbox 360 controller to the PC is the only way I can play Skyrim on the PC.

TIP: Unless you're using something third-party it's just called an Xbox 360 controller, not a gamepad.

What I've never understood is why the PC platform supports controllers but the XBox doesn't support keyboards and mouse. It would be logical for the compatibility to work both ways. I would imagine writing text using a controller is an exercise in frustration.

Poppycock. Accuracy is accuracy, no matter the game type.

I for one find the controller "look" way to slow, or too fast. There never seems to be a middle ground. My mouse on the other hand snaps to, and stops exactly where I need it when I need it.

Each to his/her own as they say.

Microsoft had a cool idea. Let PC and Xbox players, play each other online with an FPS.

They had a problem.

They took some of the best console players and the average PC player and the PC players just dominated them.

The problem is the controller, its far too limited and far to imprecise. Obviously if you are used to the controller it will seem easier, just like anything you have no practice with, but in the long run the keyboard/mouse is just that much better.
