Keyboard vs. Gamepad

What I've never understood is why the PC platform supports controllers but the XBox doesn't support keyboards and mouse. It would be logical for the compatibility to work both ways. I would imagine writing text using a controller is an exercise in frustration.

Lol no it wouldn't. You have one machine with generally wider compatibility than the other, there is absolutely nothing in logic suggesting the more restricted machine would be able to do something because the less restricted machine can.

Microsoft had a cool idea. Let PC and Xbox players, play each other online.

They had a problem.

They took some of the best console players and the average PC player and the PC players just dominated them.

The problem is the controller, its far too limited and far to imprecise. Obviously if you are used to the controller it will seem easier, just like anything you have no practice with, but in the long run the keyboard/mouse is just that much better.

Keyboard and Mouse is easy to use in Skyrim PC version once you get used to them.

Maybe, but it couldn't hurt right? So why is it not offered to XBox users?

if u give mouse/keyboard another go i recommend hot keying the shout to mb3 or f or something easier to get it than z

yeah the "Z" key seems a bit akward to use in combination with WASD, guess you could use your thumb or something but it just seems weird
don't recall any game really using the "Z" key in combination with WASD

It appears that a controller is better suited for now. Once the community fixes the interface problems, though, keyboard/mouse will be much more accurate and versatile. The only thing the keyboard lacks is anolog support in the left hand for sneaking, walking, running, etc. I wonder if you could plug in a controller and use the left anolog pad in your left hand (instead of WASD) and the mouse in your right hand. Boom! The best of both worlds.

I used a controller with the 360 for Oblivion. I then got Oblivion for the PC and used a keyboard and mouse. I played F3 and NV entirely using a keyboard and mouse.

However with Skyrim I just find the whole experience so much more comfortable with a controller. The menus are obviously designed to be used with it, I find sensitivity is improved and I lower framerates seem less laggy. In addition, I find the buttons on the controller make sense for Skyrim.

I'm currently using my 360 controller with Skyrim. The built in support for it is really, really good. It's exactly like playing it on the Xbox, just that I have better graphics, the console, mods and can take screenshots. It's a win win situation.

heh.. Gamepads were used for the NES system. My minds eye is now picturing someone trying to play Skyrim on one...

I can use either, though I perfer to be able to sit comfortably at a couch and not be confined to the same posture for hours as with a keyboard and mouse.

The stereotype of a PC gamer hunched over a desk a foot away from the monitor is a tad archaic. I use a wireless keyboard and mouse, a lap desk and a HDMI output to my TV.

Because the input devices are the only differences between the two platforms. The moment Keyboard and Mouse support is universally offered and supported for console users is the moment that the sheeple realize that they are really just using a crappy computer. People say "oh well I can hook up my Xbox to my big flatscreen and play on a couch!" Guess what, I have been able to do this with my PC for quite some time. "But I can stream Netflix!" Yeah, I have been able to do that for a long time and it works much better on my PC. The list goes on.

This is the honest truth, if KB & Mouse was widely supported for consoles, console sales would peak - then crash as people realize they are sub-par computers. Why do you think Nintendo invested in the Wii and Xbox the Kinect? It is all about peripherals and input devices. That is how they make their money and differentiate themselves from those "relic PCs" that do everything a console does and then some.

Same problem for me. I'm considering hooking up the 360 controller to my PC. Anyone else doing this?

I say do it.

More confortable and the ui is tailored for it.

Of course, try not to mention it here. Lots of elitists rage at you for having different preferences here.

WASD is an aberration. The original pattern, the one I still use is ASDLeftAlt. That was the original DOS key pattern we used on Doom.

ASDLeftAlt is less cramped and you also have better access to keys nearby. The X znd Z keys are easy and W becomes a very useful use button. In Stalker X is run and Z is health in my games. Skyrim controls work well on that pattern. I do wish I could map more mouse buttons though.

this is what i want for christmas but i probably wont get it cause no one loves me that much. :sadvaultboy: http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.228849000/categoryId.54297600

to the OP. give it time. i play both PC games and console games and about the only thing i prefer doing on a controller anymore are racing games. FPS, RTS, simulations etc are painful for me to play on a controller nowadays especially FPS games. i feel like i put a pair of lead boots on.

I 'invented' the WASD key layout for Duke Nukem 3D playing on Kali back when people still were using the arrow keys to control their FPS. The only one that makes more sense would be ESDF but I like having my hands further apart. Using your pinky for anything important is not good.

I second this, in the man cave I have a 42" on the wall with my pc hooked up to it, and for the last 80hrs have been sprawled out comfortably on my couch with my wireless keyboard and mouse (I have my shouts remapped to M4 so I can hit it with my thumb so much better now) I love it, I would like the hotkeys to be better, i.e. more, bound to L and R hands, maybe even sets so I can hit 1 and my two daggers come up etc. but other than that and the ridiculousness of the menus I have so few problems they are all inconsequential. These are all little things that do not bother me and once they are fixed by mods I will be even happier with this cocaine/heroin mixture that is Skyrim.

Also just for my gaming background so I'm not labeled pc lover (which I do lol) I've been gaming on a pc for 17 years and gaming on consoles for 17 years, right next to my PC is a 360 and I have a wired 360 controller for when I want to get old school (mega man cannot be played with a keyboard) Both control schemes are viable, in fact I bought my father in law a controller and this weekend plan to get him hooked on Skyrim as well.

So it was you. You have a lot to answer for. ;) With your hand spread wider as my setup ASDLeftAlt allows the pinky becomes a very useful crouch tool. I can play for 10s of hours with no hand cramps at all.

I use a trackball and wireless keyboard, on a 55" display. All the advantages. I have my MX518 too, in case I want to play an FPS.

I hope more people decide to use controllers exclusively, though. It would make playing FPS games hilarious.

Build engine games had a layout all their own (usually mouseless) ~and it worked pretty well IMO. I love the WASD for most FPS games, but never on the Build engine titles.

of course. I have my PC hooked up tomy TV as well.
youre still petty stationary though.. its not a slight against mouse and keyboards, controllers just offer you the ability to move around more is all.

but how would you jump?
I always use my thumb on the space bar to jump and the pinky is on ctrl and shift for crouching or sneaking or whatever
I do have pretty big hands though

As much as I have tried to like it, I just can't get used to using the keyboard playing this game. For the record, I am a new PC player and coming from a long history of playing on consoles. No matter how hard I try, the keyboard is just clunky and hard for me to use. I love the advantages of the keyboard (hotkeys are great for a game like this), and the precision/control of the mouse is so much better than my xbox controller. However, when the action gets going I just can't get used to WASD. My fingers just refuse to be able to reliably find the Z key for the shouts as well.
Put the shouts on another key/mouse-button then.

Also play a shooter or Minecraft or something like that. You will adapt to WASD movement in no time.

I played Rage, and it let you your both the 360 pad and the keyboard at the same time. (on the fly)

I used the pad for 90% of the game, sitting back and relaxing. LOVE the rumble
I used the mouse for precision aiming of the sniper gun. My accuracy dropped to nil when using the pad.
I used the number keys on the keyboard to quickly switch between shotgun/rifle/etc all 10 weapons.

Skyrim forces you to choose.
If you plug in your 360 controller, Skyrim DISABLES your keyboard/mouse. It is one or the other, not both. What a joke.

A controller is better for all the functions that a keyboard does, but not for the functions a mouse does.

And move your shout button to shift or something :)

Perhaps it is for you, not for me. I much prefer a keyboard over a controller for pretty much any game including racing games.

It is quite important to make sure you don't have just any old crappy keyboard but one that is suited to your hand size. I have fairly big hands so i have a large keyboard with a decent amount of space between each key. This ensures i never hit wrong keys.

It is just a matter of getting used to it. Same goes for people like me who always use a keyboard yet find a controller clunky. Having owned GTA 4 on both the PS3 and PC i actually found it easier to drive about with a keyboard than the controller.. although i'm sure if i played long enough i'd get used to it.
