So I was just reading through a Game Informer review of ESO, and one thing stood out to me: "an experimental Dwemer-powered stun gun."

Uh-oh... Firearms in my Elder Scrolls? And this was on the first island for the Daggerfall Covenant, too. Think there will be more guns like these, or will this be the only one in the game? Would the game be ruined for you if it turned out there were more Dwemer guns in it?

I think you might need a subscription to see it. It's in the current issue, so...

But I will quote the paragraph for you: "Stros M'kai finale dishes out a pleasant surprise: Several of the people I helped with their sidequests show up to aid me by giving me shortcuts around the pirate lord's defenses. One procures a servant disguise, another seduces his way into possession of a key to a lockbox and a third provides me with an experimental Dwemer-powered stun gun."

Sounds like a unique quest item , at least I hope it is , having guns 1000 years before the events in Oblivion and Skyrim seems to make no sense to me at all.

Nah, it does make sense. It's known that the Dwemer invented gunpowder, we even used their explosives in Morrowind. The question is, why are there none in the 3rd and 4th Era? Why was the technology abandoned?

It's not what bugs me though. I don't want guns - any kind of guns, even if they're not against the lore - in TES.

Makes perfect sense to me. The Dwemer had some pretty sick steam tech. You never know what you'll find in a Dwemer ruin.

Also, the Redguard have blackpowder and cannon, so I'm not surprised at all by having some variety of firearms.

For the same reasons we forgot how to make Concrete for several hundred years, and hydraulic cement (that can cure underwater) for even longer. If the society that creates or keeps the knowledge is destroyed, the knowledge is usually forgotten or lost to the ages. The Egyptians knew of this material, but it's use stopped when that society fell. The Romans had to rediscover it, and so did we.

Just imagine what we would know today if the Libraries of Alexandria were not burned down.

I've given my opinion on the issue in a separate thread. I'd welcome firearms in TES, but only if they were properly integrated. One-shot guns with a long reload time. They'd be useful for certain situations, but wouldn't be a weapon you'd rely solely on. I'd see it as being like a racial ability, such as the Orc's berserker ability; something to be used when in a pinch. If the games (other than this one) ever return to the land of the Redguards, I'd welcome the addition.

Well it obviously sounds like a unique item that is related to this particular quest. I have absolutely no problem with this.

I highly doubt that there will be guns. Because ZOS said what happens will be in game, and guns were not one of them that was listed.

It's not important or anything, but concrete wasn't lost after the fall of Rome. The problem is the state that the collapse of Rome left on the surrounding areas was so disastrous that Europe was forced into limbo for a millennium and incapable of production of anything. A tome manuscript called the De Architectura circa 1400 in Italy (which was a Latin translation by monks) details concrete among other inventions the Romans incorporated (as well as several of Archimedes' inventions).

Anyways, I don't really mind as far as the stun gun is concerned.

...this is a little like the "Dukes of Hazzard" moment I had when I heard there were exploding crossbow bolts in the Dawngard DLC for Skyrim.

Calm down a bit, folks. Modern day "stun guns" are not firearms, they're electrical devices. It's been made quite clear that the Dwemer had electrical technology, like the lighting in the Dwemer ruins in Morrowind, or the shock attacks of some of the spider animunculi in Skyrim.

As for the rest of the review... It's very positive. The game is described as feeling a lot like TES. No boring, tiresome quests like "kill 6 mudcrabs" or "collect 10 mammoth tusks" were in the demo. Quests do not give out more hints than necessary, so they don't get into the simple "go here and do this" type of feeling that Skyrim is plagued with. The game may be a little more linear, not being able to ignore the main quest, and the combat is more like an MMORPG than Skyrim. But it's still very good, and the battles are exciting and encourage strategy. Can't wait to try it out for myself.

I died a little inside.. I hope to not see any form of gun.. I'd much rather have a quest item have to do with guns than have an entire weapon skill/class devoted to guns though. As it stands, it isn't a big deal since it's only a quest, but if players can use guns at any time, there will be hell.

i hate guns in these type of games more than anything. i remember in wow how i would never use a gun with my hunter no matter how much better it was. i have done this with pretty much every game that has guns and bows. i will always used an underpowered bow over a overpowered gun.

Yes, the secret to making concrete (calcinated lime) was lost for a thousand years after the fall of the Roman Empire. That is the reason concrete was not used much or at all in those years. It was rediscovered around 1200.

It is conceivable, as the Dwemer did have a lot of steam powered technology as long as they are rare artifacts and not base weapons. As others have said technology can be lost, especially if it is not used by many (there is a certain method of steel forging which is still lost). The turbulent period in which the game is set also supports this.

I am still a little dissapointed though, as I don't see this being implemented well.

There may have been a couple, but I've seen most of them before. The ones I hadn't seen may have come from elsewhere.
