And their cutie mark will be the triforce, Wisdom - Sweetiebell, Triforce of power - Applebloom, Triforce of courage - Scootaloo. It's obvious right from the start.

Maybe Celestia and Luna are the only of their kind? There are no recorded history mentioning other supreme rulers or co-rulers which leads me to believe that Celestia and Luna have been the almighty Alicorn gods since they were born when Equestria was founded (probably much earlier). The other question would be if they are eternal, or if someone else is to take their spot in the future. If Celestia and Luna are destined to raise the sun and moon and rule Equestria as eternal beings, there wouldn't be any need of more Alicorns, thus not making it possible for another Alicorn to be born (or a powerful unicorn to become one). We simply can't let unicorns become so powerful that they can influence the world on their own, that would become a massive chaos of disharmony and other bad stuff.

I see Alicorns as divine creatures, and they are among lots of other strange gods and spirits in the Equestria lore. I believe that Celestia and Luna are unique (just like Discord is a unique spirit).

I see I didn't get to talk much about wheter only females become Alicorns or not, I think I went way to deep. I do however hope that the show eventually gives us more info regarding the gods of Equestria, and their origins.

Discord is reffered to as a Draconequus, and Cheerilee said that the draconequus represents discord, and since the type of creature he is has a name I think there has to be more of them.

I've heard about Draconequus aswell, and maybe you are right. Discord probably has lots of homies ready to buck up your world.

From my point of view, alicorns are meant to represent aspects of all three types of ponies (and so in a sense embody harmony, the foil to Discord). So I wouldn't ever want them to just be powerful unicorns.

I really hope they go over Alicorns sooner or later, giving us canon to deal with on them. So far we know of 3, Luna, Celestia, Cadence?(I don't pay much attention to the fandom as most of it scares/irritates me, but I saw something about this on EQD) And no idea if they're a different race, a rare as hell subspecies, or just as you said, powerful unicorns that give themselves wings.

That or it has something to do with the use of the Elements of harmony.

I think it's safe to say the alicorns come up sometime around (or after) the 'flashback' scene in the hearths warming episode.

I don't think Alicorns are in specific supposed to just be mostly related to unicorns. They have the best traits of every kind of pony really. They have the biggest horns and the strongest magic, they have the biggest wings in proportion to their body size (really normal pegasi have pretty small wings, Alicorns do too but they have at least a bit bigger wings compared to over all body size) and they're the largest one physically over all and quite possibly strongest if put into a contest of strength. Granted with ponies like Big Mac this could be refuted...

Which is why i'm thinking the Elements are involved. They seem to be a combination of the three working in 'harmony', along with looodes of power, which I suppose could be attributed to the age of the alicorns (1000+ years old)

Sadly, all we really have to go off of for Alicorns are a lot of fanon material, which is why i'm hoping we get an alicorn episode that actually explains them.

So, my random G-mod group photo is almost done, it's kinda nice, but anyone who have tried posing those pony ragdolls can tell that it can be really hard. Lyra's front leg looks a little bit messed up, and the model for AJ's hat is to small compared with her head, but I'll manage.

Same i'm going off only what i've seen, heard, and read in various areas with the only thing being confirmed is the term "Alicorn". It was on one of http://sibsy.deviantart.com/ journal posts that she confirmed the crew were calling Luna and Celestia Alicorns. After that we know that they have existed for possibly 1100 to 1500 years since Luna and Celestia used the elements to trap Discord. There are just TONS of scenarios out there imho and until Mrs. Faust or the current crew confirm things we're really up in the air with things.

Here's what I know so far:

1. Episode 1 - Battle took place between Luna (Nightmare Moon) and Celestia about 1000 years before the start of main series. This is further amended in season 2 episode 1 where we see Celestia AND Luna battling discord with the Elements of Harmony in the stained glass window.
2. Celestia has extensive magical books at her disposal since there is the royal Canterlot library that Twilight seems to constantly visit. Again this is seen in Episode 1 where Twilight is looking for a reference guide.
3. Teleportation? - This one i'm quite curious about as we've seen this in episode 2 where Celestia comes in through the window in a beam of light. We also see this in S3E3 when she appears yet again in a beam/ball of light.
4. Power - Celestia didn't seem to break a sweat reversing everypony that was affected by Twilight's (Want It Need It Spell) as she put it. Twilight is a dang strong magic caster so it's not without question to say Celestia is probably 5x as strong as twilight. Only thing that seems to be stronger that Celestia herself is discord though with him being a trickster (and apparently able to travel back in time) it's hard to truly say.
5. Confirmed Alicorns - Luna and Celestia are the only ones being Princesses however Candice will be a new confirmed one.

After that all material is pretty much fanon since there are still some things left unheard/unknown. Only thing that I am unsure of is if Celestia and perhaps Luna can make a Sonic Rainboom or if theirs would be quite different due to their power.

I don't think it was as much time travel as it was a flashback. Towards the beginning of S2E2, Discord shows Twilight what he meant when he spoke his riddle.
