LMG vs. Minigun

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 12:42 pm

Which do you prefer? Both eat through ammo like it's nothing, but I got a surplus of caps to spend and just found the Avenger and a fully repaired LMG. They seem very very similar, and I'm having a hard time deciding which to play with.

LMG is more or less on par with the Minigun while the LMG weighs less, I'd say use the LMG, I enjoy using that one than the Minigun.

The Minigun is better but has a higher STR requirement for use.

The LMG has less ammo, its less accurate, slower rate of fire, less item health and cant crit. It does do more damage than the Minigun per shot though and has a slightly higher overall DPS unless the Minigun has been modded. The unique Minigun is one of the best weapons on the entire game and blows the LMG and the common Minigun out of the water.

light MG for me. The .223 ammo really makes the MG a winner in this competition since it is very cheap, doesn't break your gun and is effective against armored targets. If you have Raul with you, you can alternate between .223 and surplus ammo and never have to worry about the ammo costs.

I personally prefer to use the LMG because i don't have to worry about the wind up for Miniguns.
That and the fact with the minigun I usually end up wasting ammo because the gun continues to fire a bit after you let go of the trigger.
The only time I feel the unique minigun is better is if you have the caps and resources and need to do kill a giant horde of enemies (like an HUGE army of zombies).
But such situations are exceedingly rare in normal unmodded game play.

They use different rounds, the more brutal comparison would be Assault Carbine and Minigun, and there is just nothing to justify the high requirement (strength, skill and weight) of the later.

If you've got the Avenger and you have the strength to use it I'd go with that.

Mostly because you can find ridiculous amounts of 5mm AP ammo, while it's hard to get a significant amount of 5.56 AP ammo.

But you can't go wrong with either of these weapons.

You can only buy it from the misc section in bulk. I think it comes down to being roughly 2 rounds per cap but unlike the surplus ammo it degrades your gun slower.

edit: Just checked and here is the data

10 caps for a box of 20 rounds

.223 round stats.

Gun CND .8
Gun DAM .9
Enemy DT -8

I've never really had any experience with the LMG, but based on that I'd say minigun. It's just so much more traditional than the LMG, and I'm just that kind of person.

My vote is for ye olde minigun:

+ Minigun is more accurate, quite a bit more accurate with the Dampened Subframe mod. The LMG has the same "cone of spray" that SMGs have (far worse than shotguns, even), making it almost a melee weapon.

+ Minigun does half the damage per shot, but armor piercing rounds are more common.

+ Minigun shoots twice as fast to start with. MORE than twice as fast, with the motor upgrade.

- "Sloppy trigger". Spin up and spin down times.

- heavier, higher strength reqs. Somewhat compensated by the fact that it's not a precision weapon in any sense of the word, and trying to fight at a distance where the wobble become a factor isn't really what this weapon is for.

I've had limited use of both, but with that, I'd say the LMG just because it's more mobile. I wish there were a few different types of LMG. Maybe something for the DLCs.

I prefer the LMG. Both the regular, modded, and Avenger Miniguns burn through ammo too quickly and too inaccurate for me.

LMG, on the other hand, seems to be more accurate, at least to my style of play.

I say the LMG with out including upgrades for the minigun and minigun with upgrades.
These are the stats though:

LMG:

dmg/attack: 21
DPS: 255
attacks/sec: 12
spread: 3.2
crit dmg: 21
ammo type: 5.56mm
ammo capacity: 90
strength req.: 8 (6 with Weapon Handling Perk)
skill req.: 100
AP: 30
weight: 15

Minigun:

dmg/attack: 12
DPS: 243 (380 with motor upgrade)
attacks/sec: 20
spread: 2.3
crit dmg: 12
ammo type: 5mm round
ammo capacity: 240
strength req.: 10 (8 with Weapon Handling Perk)
skill req.: 100
AP: 30
weight: 25

I like the LMG. it's lighter, holds nearly the same(I think) amount of ammo with the mod for it, has no spin-up, and ammo is much more common.

I also think that it looks cooler.

Assault Carbine:
dmg/attack: 12
DPS: 144
attacks/sec: 12
spread: 1.5
crit dmg: 12
ammo type: 5mm round
ammo capacity: 24(+6 with mod)
strength req.: 3
skill req.: 75
AP: 20
weight: 6

I seriously don't know what value does Minigun have.

It's DPS is higher. That's it though.

And 100% ones sell for a crap-ton. That's something.

Why choose? I use both. LMG for dispatching single enemies, Minigun for longer range, Missile Launcher for large groups, and Grenade Machinegun when it absolutely must not see tomorrow. And a Bumper Sword for enemies that don't justify the waste of ammo :D

I seriously don't know what value does Minigun have.

Aesthetic. It looks much more intimidating than the assault carbine, and that's enough for me
