Microstutter in first person - third person no issue whatsoe

Post » Sat May 26, 2012 11:23 pm

like prom night, Ruan, my hopes were high but in the end I'm just left with a magazine in the bathroom with a towel ...the 64 fps limit didn't make any difference for me, but hopefully it works for someone else (didn't matter what number I put it...it worked as a limiter but had no effect on the microstuttering). Odd, but for me these only occurs in the following conditions (ALL must be in place):
- in first person
- indoors
- walking or running or sneaking
- looking at the floor getting close to furniture (such as cabinet or table)
- moving my mouse along the Y-axis

Documents > My Games > Skyrim. There you will find the Skyrim and SkyrimPrefs config files. You need to add this the the [General] section] of 'Skyrim'

BTW anyone else notice since patch 1.3 that typing 'saveini' into the console now saves the full, and very bloated Skyrim ini into your main Skyrim directory [in Data] rather than overwriting the one in Documents?.. and it reads it from this new location.

Im getting microstutters as well. I just started a new game and the whole intro scene plays at 40 ish fps, but feels like 20 fps. My saved game for my other character never experienced anything like this. I'm puzzled.

The borderless window removed absolutely all the microstutter for me, I keep advising people to give it a try and vsync works just fine even though people keep telling me it couldn't work but I wonder how else it could be locked at 60FPS with zero tearing (I'm very picky when it comes to tearing).

@ OP I'm pretty sure the stuttering is also there when you're in third person you just won't notice it that much because you are further away from light sources and textures wich seem to be the cause for stuttering. Try looking at the floor or a wall and walk you will most definatly see some stuttering even though your framrate doesn't get low. Same goes with ligh sources like candles or torches they cause stuttering when close to them or really nasty tearing when you disable vsync in the ini.

I had the same micro stutter issue with my 6950 2gb. I haven't played with it a lot at this point, but I can tell you 100% that it was there when I had AA and Anisotropic filtering turned on (AT ALL) and was gone 100% with them turned off.
Indecently - with AA and Anisotropic turned on, I also got a crash to desktop or blackscreen freeze once every 30 min or so. Turned off, no crashes at all.

Looking for a solution as well. Maybe this iFPSClamp setting?

The "IFPSclamp " will cause more issues.. this is only to VERIFY if this is indeed your issue. Test but don't leave it that way.

IF you set IFPSclamp to 60 and your FPS falls below 60 the Engine is FORCED to still render the 60 Frames. so it will go into slow motion. (bullet time)

IF you set iFPSclamp to a lower number and you get FPS over that number you will go into FAST motion.

IF you set iFPSclamp to 60 and you get a solid 60 FPS and the Micro stutter is gone, then this verifies this IS your issue. Turn it back off and wait for OSR or some other program to fix this.

So this is NOT a solution. read people, I posted links.

And yes your welcome for the info..not mine but what i found reading...

I tried the iFPSClamp setting but it didn't have any effect. Currently the best fix I have found that works consistently is the fps limiter: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34 .

Edit: @Camaro I just read your post. Haha, yeah that makes way more sense now.

Well I don't know why this work for me, but it does 100%... I can remove, or set to 0, the IFPSclamp line and my stutters return. It was awful indoors, even though Fraps said I was getting 60fps it felt like 30 or less due to the frequency of these sticky frames.

I'm seeing no drop in performance with this either, and I'm not seeing the described bullet-time affect either, even when the frame rate drop below 60.

Yeah, my logo's go red... had to remove the lines in the interface section to remove it. Funny how it reads the ini in the data folder first, ignoring the one in Documents once you do a saveini now... I was climbing the walls until I found where it was putting it now.... must do my map too.

I used to have very "shaky" hands when looking up and down in some areas. I managed to fix this problem by using the ENB mod (http://enbdev.com/download_en.htm, patch 9). I changed the EnableFPSLimit setting in "enbpatch.ini" to true and the FPSLimit to 60.0. The shaking went away but then I got another problem - my character is a mage and when I changed the active spells it often took a lot of time for the new spell to be ready to cast. This I managed to fix by pressing numpad *, which is a shortcut for ENB to show the FPS value in the left upper corner when playing. I have to keep it on all the time.

NOTE: You have to fill in your DeviceId and VendorId into the enbpatch.ini. You can find these with a program called DxDiag (you should have it if you have DirectX installed). Start the program and click "Save All Information". Select a folder, click save and open the created file with notepad and search the values.

Wel RUAN you are my hero!! IT WORKED!! :tops: :tops: :celebration: :celebration:

It stopped all the microstutter i was having in the game ! MAN what a difference! i actually enjoy playing the game now !! the microstutter could be nowhere found! Indoors and outdoors its gone POOFF!! like magic!! I am using the iFPSclamp= 60 and play the game in Ultra in 1920 x 1080 with almost nonstop 60 FPS without stutter! RUAN thank you thank you !!

The only drawside is whenever i am in cities or some spots where framedrops from 60 -->45 happen, indeed the game goes into some kind of slo-mo bulletime mode hahaha
but that doesnt annoy me as the microstutter does once again a BIG THANK YOU!! :celebration: :celebration:

FYI - using the iFPSclamp setting can and will eventually cause problems. It messes with time in the game, proportionate to FPS. Look it up in the oblivion forums - it was nothing but trouble when used.

The advised fix for eliminating microstutter at this time, is to use a borderless window mod, and run Skyrim in a window.

How do people read?...start from the begining, page ONE and then see who posted what...Wow just wow..

I also told everyone this is NOT a proper fix it is for Testing Only ......

IF you want a true fix for now listen to this Post...same thing I said about messing things up...

Yes, your absolutely correct, and patient  ... I am completely stutter free using 64 [not 60 strangely] - but I too have now seen animations go into slow-mo. I've tried all sorts to rid the game of these tics, and this is the only thing that works, even if it is not a proper solution.

I will now look at the borderless window fix, and see how that goes... with other games windowed modes always proved slower, but will try regardless.

Just to follow up on my own post. I found that disabling the in game setting for AA and Anisotropic filtering, and using Catalyst CC overrides completely solved my stuttering issues. (My laptop with an Nvidia card never had the problem)
In other words, I set the Skyrim settings for both to ZERO or off.. and I set the graphics card CCC settting to override application and use 8EQ and 8 samples (8 vs 16 didnt change anything) and Viola. No more studder and the game looks better IMO.

Yep, that's the recommended way of using AA and AF with an ATI card right now. Don't use iFPSclamp, it can cause problems.

I had heard that not using the in game settings with ATI makes a big performance difference, but I didnt realize how much till I tried it.

I cannot get AA to work outside of the games own settings... using RadeonPro I have tried to force various levels of AA, but they simply don't get applied, apart from morphological, which is blurry and gives poor performance. RP works with my other games to force AA modes but not this... any ideas? as running with no AA seems to makes the stutters go away, so it would be nice to try modes outsides of the games own.

Same problem here, stutter in first person but completely smooth in third person. Weird.

Running Win 7 64-bit and one Radeon HD 6870.

In RadeonPro you have to turn Catalyst AI off for AA to work. Once you set up your Skyrim profile, hold down the left shift button, right click and "open location." It will open a file, find the line and change it to . Save it and the AA should be forced. If you make any changes AT ALL to the profile you will have to redo this process. Not sure if you can disable Catalyst AI in CCC anymore...it used to be an option, but I can't find it anymore.

Is this an issue with skyrim or every game? I'm sure my AA works with other games like oblivion and batman Arkham Assylum.
