Is Midnight Release Worth Social Suicide?

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 5:31 am

Edit for misunderstanding :

This is about whether I'm going to turn up to one of the major Bethesda sponsered release events. With all the madness that entails.

http://www.videogamer.com/xbox360/the_elder_scrolls_v_skyrim/news/skyrim_uk_midnight_launch_details.html

I won't really ostracized for it, but I can expect a fair amount of good natured abuse from friends if it came out. That's what we do to each other. I exaggerated a little there little. Sorry.

I was also hoping someone might know what these things are like.

Original post:

I didn't preorder due to job uncertainty, but now I have an offer confirmed and week before starting I'll going to get Skyrim on Friday. Yay! (Mainly yay for the job, but also the game)

So vaguely considering going to Oxford St, London for midnight release. However there will be freaky people in fancy dress, news crews, etc. None of my friends are gamers in the slightest, and playing a sword and sorcery RPG is kind of a dirty little secret for me.

Should I risk being outed on national TV? Think it could be a good laugh, but waiting til a more civilized hour is much safer.

Anyone ever go to these things? Is there a big communal spirit, or mainly just a bunch of people fighting to be first in the queue?

There likely will not be any national TV. Skyrim is not World of Warcraft, so the social stigma should be limited. Having said that, when I go to a rare Midnight launch of anything, I keep a low profile :)

Go wearing a nice suite w/ all black sunglasses and constantly smoke cigars. You'll look cool no matter what your doing.

Cameras turn up to all sorts of rubbish in this town and local london news would be damaging enough. Game has limited edition prices for best costume, etc. so I'm sure they've also got incentives for the press to drum up some cheap publicity.

Still risky. What if a reporter focuses on him?

Reporter: Evening sir! Looking forward to slaying mighty dragons and looting epic dungeons?
You Maniacs!: Umm, dunno what you're talking about. I'm here to buy an ethernet cable.
Reporter: At midnight? And in a queue of 60+ nerds?
You Maniacs!: Problem?
Reporter: Oh and look, you have a <3 TES wristband! How cute! Enjoy your adventures in the magical land of Skyrim sir!
You Maniacs!: My life is ruined.

Just go there, have a few beers, bring a few cans with you as well, while you are there, meet new people, share the drinks, talk, share game info, treat it as an outdoor concert, who cares about being on TV, you would be drunk and socially all is forgiven.

Dragonshout the news crew away. Really though it's just TES, I couldn't care less if I was on the news in a line to buy it. (not that I will be) It's a line for something like CoD I wouldn't be caught dead in.

When I go to midnight releases for games I couldn't care less what people think about me. Most of my friends don't play games but they know who I am and what my interests are. If my friends stopped talking to me because I was excited to play a video game I would find new friends. You have to be yourself. (the more you know)

Just have a couple beers beforehand, maybe a sambuca, and you won't give a damn what anyone else thinks :celebration:

So nobody knows you play TES games, and now you have this one rare opportunity to talk about TES in real life with a ton of TES fans? I'd go.

Mate, the problem you looked bad here cos you are trying to pretend to be doing something you are not.

No matter what you do in life, just be truthful and confident, you will have no fear and find success, and be considerate about it of course.

I went to the cataclysm midnight release in my city, while I wouldn't say it was some communal spirit, everybody got along well, stayed in queue the entire time (hell, who wants to lose their place in line) and were friendly enough. My wife and I brought our two standard sized poodles, so we got a lot of attention from many of the people that were there, or rather our poodles got a lot of attention.

But in our city people don't wear costumes, or if they did it was pretty limited to maybe some type of makeup.

I originally did not want to go, but my wife basically begged me to go, so I went. I'd have to say, if you've got nothing else to do, go experience it at least once, after all you're not getting any younger sitting there.

Disguise yourself! Sunglasses, trench coat and a huge fake mustasch (or shave your own if you have a huge mustasch already). Stand in line with a newspaper with peek holes in it.
No-one will notice you if you do this, I've seen it in films!

WUSS!

You (and anyone else who is ashamed) svck , GTFO with your closet BS!

& your friends svck ass , get new ones

Ashamed of playing the game? No
Ashamed of freezing my **** off in the street to get it early? Yeah, a little. That's ammunition for years of jokes at my expense.

There are advantages to having mates who don't play games. I'll never be told they can't come out for a drink because they've almost got the storm call shout. The reverse may not always be the case of course.

Tip: You will have a MUCH better life being as who you are and openly doing the things you like. Believe me, I once had "cool" friends who didn't like RPG (or studying) and were all like "Hey lets surf and hit on girls" they didn't like when I started doing the things I personally love so we splitted up. Now they are all worthless junkies, I have a girlfriend who plays videogames with me.
