Mod textures not showing up in game... for one mod only

Post » Sun May 20, 2012 12:46 am

I've tried searching extensively for this issue here, the Nexus, Google... I can't find anything *relevant*.

The mod is the Glowing Ore mod, it's one of three texture mods I've tried to run (also better female faces and the "pure waters" mod, which worked fine first time out).

I've installed it with NMM and manually, triple-checked the directories, I've read all 42 pages of the discussion on the Skyrim Nexus page, I've run the game from the launcher and from the SBW mod, with and without SKSE, vanilla... *NOTHING* happens in-game, no change to ore vein textures.

I've tried starting a new character, verifying files, going to a new cell in game I've never visited, and compared the files to an install on someone else's system that *is* working - same files, same places, same options (except they have a couple ultra graphics settings and I'm running high).

I tried the original release, 1.10, 1.20, and 2.0 on both vanilla Skyrim and with the SBW mod (separate launcher).

1) Does anyone else have any ideas about why this might not be working? I even tried loading loose files, even though that's not supposed to affect this.

2) Has anyone else had textures/meshes mysteriously not load on *any* mod, and how did you solve it?

The only tutorials for textures/meshes I can find online are full-on ground-up mod building, and this is a mod that seems to be working for most people, just not me.

While I've had plenty of CTDs, a couple of lockups, and the requisite quest, physics and clock bugs, I don't see any reason why this would *not* work and the other mods do, apart from it being mesh-based instead of textures only (and the original version did not use new meshes, and it doesn't work either).

(scratches head)

(sorry if there's weird formatting, I pasted part of this in and it looks oddly formatted)

PS I tried adding a Conan Sword mod that includes new meshes, and that works.

When you launch the game and the skyrim launcher comes up, try this.

Go to Data Files, and below the list of mods is a checkbox labeled Load Loose Files. Tick that box then load the game.

???

Is that a way of saying TL:DR? :)

That was mentioned in the post above, under item 1).

I'm trying to understand how it's supposed to work, he has the cubemaps in a custom diectory, I thought an esp or esm was required to tell the program where to find stuff in custom folders?

I was trying to avoid going through "textures and meshes 101" just to get one mod working, since it seems like 99% of the feedback he's getting indicates it's working. I even tested it on another system and it worked, under apparently identical conditions. I even had someone else install it on my system in case I had undiagnosed brain damage or something, no joy. They were baffled.

If I *do* figure it out I will post back here, or hopefully someone will have fixed this before testing their own mods and post it here.

I admit it, this is a bump to try to catch weekend traffic. (sigh)

Still no idea why this doesn't work. See the added note about another custom mesh mod that works for me. Why? I don't know.

Have you tried installing it without NMM?

Was the OP really that long? :)

Third paragraph, I did install it manually (without NMM). All the versions listed. Uninstalling between attempts.

Remove all trace of the mod - Delete the Meshes\Dungeons\Mines\Ore folder, and the Textures\300cubemaps\ folder, then do a manual install, see if it works.

I can't think of anything that could be the issue :/

Did that every time. I even deleted all my texture mods (and the directories), verified files, and then reinstalled them. Nada.

Obviously I can't think of why it doesn't work either. Especially as it seems to work for *most* other people (a few people on Nexus said it did nothing and no one responded). And another mesh-mod works for me (Conan Swords).

Still scratching my head.

Well, afaict (with my tiny moddeling skills), the only change to the meshes is to point to the new textures. Try making an additional folder called "cubemaps" next to the 300cubemaps, and copying the modded textures there as well. That's the vanilla location for the textures the mod replaces. See if it does anything.

Edit: If it DOES work, things other than ore veins will be affected. Not sure what else uses those cubemap textures, though. Shouldn't be too much (I hope.)

Didn't make ore veins glow, though I did have some problems running the game after that. One of the earlier versions used the cubemaps folder (that may have caused issues like I experienced - a crash and then not being able to start the game until I rebooted).

I know, just it's such an odd, inexplicable thing. Which basically describes my Skyrim experience, odd, inexplicable things.

I asume your talking about http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=193 Have you tried the install last function in Wrye Bash? You say you have tried multiple versions, have you tried redownloading the latest one?

Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

Still no change to the ore vein textures.

And PS I tried running it with the latest redownloaded version and *nothing* else, no other mods, no SBW windowless launcher, etc. No joy.

Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

Still no change to the ore vein textures.

First make sure your load order is set properly. Use the BOSS sorter mod to help you automatically...

What good would BOSS do? There are no esp's to load, the textures should overwrite the previous ones and appear in game.

That's what I said, but since none of this makes any sense at all (and other texture mods work fine), I updated BOSS and ran it again, just in case one of the other mods was doing something.

Which doesn't make any sense because the glowing ore mod doesn't work when it's the *only* mod installed.

But it didn't change anything anyway, still no changes to ore texture.

The only reasons I'm spending so much time on this are:

1) A few other people had the issue and got no answers, and

2) I *HATE* things that don't make sense.

Check your
Data\Textures and
Data\Meshes

YOu should have

Data\textures\300cubemaps\ then a bunch of dds files
Data\meshes\dungeons\mines\ore should contain a bunch of NIF files

Also, NMM should install it just fine, that's what I used to install it.

So I wandered around looking for some ore saved and then installed the mod with Wrye Bash and the new textures show up for me.

I figured out that my other "texture replacer mod" didn't actually have replacement nif files, so I downloaded one that did and it works, so it's not that no meshes will load.

I downloaded Nifskope and checked the texture paths on the nif files included with the glowing ore mod, they're correct (some mods use absolute paths and my Steam dir is on drive D).

I can't find anything wrong, it just inexplicably doesn't work.

Did you try a fresh install, perhaps? That's the only thing I can recommendat this point. Not just "all other mods removed" but clean install.
