no before skyrim, a giant rock that vivic was holding up crashed into Morrowind, also the red mountain erupted, and argonians invaded
I think there is a book in the game that talks about it

It was destroyed way before Skyrim. About 40 years after the events of Oblivion. Not a rumor.

The gaint rock over vivec fell at the speed it was travelling before it was stopped by Vivec, this triggered the explosion of Red Mountain causing widespread tsunamis across the Morrowind region and beyond.

With much of Morrowind devestated, the argonians took the chance to enact revenge for the centuries of slavery, invading what was left in Morrowind.

There must be some parts of Morrowind still intact, though, right? As in not heavily damaged like most of it was supposed to be?

I would rather think that for those that were alive at the time, it did matter. Morrowind may be largely destroyed, but I feel like I as the player, was still a part of something special there.

When you really think about it's like Morrowind was this great legendary province and now it's gone... All the lore, the Gods, the temples, the great people... it's all destroyed.

I hope there's an expansion that can go more in depth to this :(

If anyone wants to know what happened to the empire after Oblivion read 'The Great War'. That book really sets the political mood for the game. I think it should be a required book to read for those who have played Oblivion.

Morrowind was also a cesspit of racial and social vilification. It was a horrible place really.

Red Mountain blew up before 4E 20, and according to The Great War, by 4E 168 it had "never fully recovered," but since the Argonians apparently didn't make an attempt to colonize it, it's just an empty wasteland right now. Hopefully it will become hospitable again over time.

morrowind had some tough times, but its been like 200 years. vvardenfell is probably a slum and argonians own the place now, but i doubt everyone just left all that ash lying around and never fixed up the place after red mountain erupting. i hear some dunmer talking like morrowind is still liveable (granted they are long-lived and might be reminiscing). really, i cant just be a smoldering pile of ash with lizards murdering and pillaging everywhere for 200 consecutive years, its probably in some state of working order now, just an argonian province where dunmer either dont want to live or are being forced out of by their reptilian overlords.

You gave the Dunmer at least 50+ years of peace and prosperity along with ending any threat that a hoard of corpus beasts, who can spread their disease which none aside from a single egotistical mage in a faction largely known for cruelty knows the cure to, could have had on the rest of the empire.

It was far from being for nothing.

The Nord's pact with the Aldmeri Dominion in itself will cause the Nords' destruction. It's blatantly obvious. Also, Morrowind is gone.... :(

Off topic: I have heard rumor that the next TES will be set in Elsweyr. Any truth? I would love it, as Khajiit are my favorite race.

The Ministry of Truth levelled up its Acrobatic skill by falling onto Vivec :(.

I was pretty bummed to hear that all that fantastic, unique lore and culture was destroyed as well. It survives in its refugees, I suppose, but still... I enjoyed my time there, and it's saddening to hear that now it's gone.

Vvardenfell got Nuked from Orbit.

As for the mainland itself, it's possible that some dregs of Elven society still live. But the Great Houses got face-stomped by the Argonians, so who knows.

...I honestly can't help but almost feel sorry for the poor guys. To consider themselves so high only to get rocked right to the bottom of the scrap heap. Yeesh.

After the Oblivion Crisis, Red Mountain exploded when the Ministry of Truth crashed into Vvardenfell. The explosion destroyed most of Morrowind, making Solstheim and southern Morrowind the few still-habitable places within the province. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Ministry_of_Truth
