Morrowinders: your opinion on Skyrim

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 4:13 am

Thinking about picking this up, but I didn't like Oblivion because of how static and generic the world was. How does this compare to Morrowind? I'm not really concerned about the combat, I'm more concerned about immersion and sense of mystery that was found in it. I know the game hasn't been out long and honeymoon feeling is still probably lingering, but any pro/cons would be helpful.

Thanks

I definitely feel this game has a much better atmosphere than Oblivion. They did a better job with voice acting and dialogue options (although it still isn't like the barrels of text Morrowind gave you, for better and worse). The best thing is the environment of Skyrim itself. While Cyrodill felt bland and empty, Skyrim feels filled and alive, and just looks beautiful.

On this area, skyrim is amazing, the world feels about 10 times better than oblivion, just the little touches like the innkeep showing you to your room and stuff, just lovely.

Oblivion was static? Are you saying that morrowind wasnt static..(or atleast less than oblivion?)..

But yeah, its better than oblivion and maybe even morrowind, i need to play it some more. But it feels like a mix of daggerfall with morrowinds characters in some how oblivionish place...

Nice. I've heard that Skyrim heavily improves upon Oblivion and from looking at screenshots, the landscapes do look really beautiful and intriguing. It's nice to know that they've improved upon the text.

Morrowind may not have had npcs walking around with schedules but I actually had the desire to explore the world and level because everything in the game didn't scale with me which broke the game for me. Plus there wasn't much in terms of unique item placement like there was in morrowind which made exploring fun. That's what I meant by static.

How so? What are your first impressions?

Morrowind started when you clicked "New game". So did Oblivion.

Skyrim is a big letdown.

Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim are all good games no doubt. I have noticed Skyrim having some of the same music Morrowind had. Anybody else notice?

Meh. I liked the atmosphere of Morrowind but Skyrims UI beats Morrowind by leaps and bounds. Oblivion did too.

I think Bethesda did a wwonderful job of making Skyrim seem like a real world.

Morrowind was static because the NPCs never moved much. Having said that, otherwise the world was full of life, you could always expect to find something happening somewhere, with an encounter with a quest giving naked nord just waiting for you around the bend

Oblivion was static because nothing happened. The Radiant Ai gave the NPCs a floor turtle schedule, but they never actually achieved anything. Worse than that, they weren't even able to give you quests on the fly, with a very small number of NPCs being the exception to the rule.

Not to mention that Oblivion never actually got harder, unless you screwed up your leveling. Whereas in Morrowind...

Oh yeah. And unique item placement. There was actually a reason to go around the world and see what was what. OB didn't really have that. First dungeon was GOOD, then there were a couple of others worth exploring, but for the most part the dungeons were drab and boring and not worth visiting.

Morrowind is my favorite game of all time, but I have to admit, as long as things don't take a turn for the worse, Skyrim has the potential to surpass Morrowind for me. It'll take several hundred more hours to male that judgement, though.

I haven't played much yet but the atmosphere jsut feels so much better then oblivion and I'm getting feelings I got in MW. I jsut sat and starred at a river with bugs flying over it and fishes jumping, and a deer eating grass on the other side. then looking up at the mountains. I will enjoy this game for a long time, thats how it feels like now, but I have played for only 1 hour :)

That's my opinion so far, which is kind of praising with faint damnation. The game is excellent. The huge amounts of dialoque and better (usually) voice actors help, as it makes it closer to the quality I could imagine in my head with the Morrowind text. The setting also has a distinct sense of place like Morrowind did, though where Morrowind is strange and somber, Skyrim is cold and foreboding. Immersion is the key for me (obviously the stats/ hardcoe RPG Morrowind fans would disagree, but I don't care much about that stuff) and Skyrim is much more immersive than Oblivion.

It reminds me of Bloodmoon too, and since I love Bloodmoon that's a good thing indeed.

Anyways, only time will tell if Skyrim will surpass Morrowind as my favorite game of all time, but so far I'm loving it. It defiantly blows Oblivion away, Right now I'm doing a lot of exploring the game world, which I did a lot of in Morrowind but almost none of in Oblivion, so that's a good sign. So far this die-hard Morrowind fan approves of Skyrim. From what I've seen of it so far it's a great game.

It has a dark, ominous, gritty atmosphere, just like Morrowind. Not half as mysterious, but still far better than Oblivion.

Really fun. I've not done a lot of the main quest just been chilling around towns with a job like cutting wood. Like I said this is a really fun game so you can't go wrong.
Only thing I feel that needs to be changed is how quickly you level up.

I loved Morrowind, played Oblivion and enjoyed it, but later developed a seething hatred for Oblivion after about 100 hours of gameplay. I never went back to it time and time again like I did, and still do, with Morrowind. Oblivion I felt was lacking in a lot of areas.

That said, I've only played 3 hours of Skyrim so far, but I think it's a masterpiece. Definitely pick this game up. The atmosphere is brilliant, the world feels alive and it's beautiful. The dungeons (the one dungeon I've actually been to, I should say) was amazing and deep, with lots of twists and turns and changes of scenery, and nice handplaced loot to pick up. It was just amazing. The intro sequence and first half hour of the game are amazing as well, and really immerses you in the world. The world feels so alive, that's the best way I can describe it. The atmosphere again, is brilliant. So far it's just a great, great game, and is as relatively as good as Morrowind, if not better. It's really that good.

So all that said, you should definitely pick this one up.

It's a much more believable world than Oblivion. There's a good sense of politics going on at different levels, between cities, races, families... Conversations between NPCs make sense (no 'Hi NPC I don't recognize. I saw a mudcrab the other day, goodbye'), and they have way more animations than in Oblivion for interacting with the environment. Cities feel more alive, and taverns especially.

The world itself seems very varied too in its environments. It's awesome that rivers drag you and objects along, and the game has some spectacular waterfalls. There's also more going on on the roads. More people travelling, hunters hunting, people with quests, crashed carriages with stuff in it... Oblivion's roads were fairly empty and other than new dungeons you wouldn't really find anything on them. Animals appear to be able to sleep, hunt other animals, and I think I saw a deer drink at a river...

Dungeons appear to make sense, usually have something unique about them, and enemies inside them interact with the environment. They aren't just mindlessly standing around waiting for a hero to attack them.

As for my #1 enemy, creature/item level scaling... Hard to tell at this point, I'll have to play more. There are definitely high level creatures around when you're still weak. Most giants are like level 30 and have over 500 health, and I ran into a master vampire in a fort at level 2 and I had to run from him. There's also a good amount of hand placed loot, which is always nice.

I have yet to see anything where I thought 'Well, this was better in Oblivion'.

Wow I went away for a second and this topic blew up. :D

Thanks for all the opinion guys I really appreciate it! I guess I will be picking it up since at the very least it's better than Oblivion judging by the general consensus :P
