Most depressingdistressing things in film

Post » Thu Aug 02, 2012 10:57 pm

So I started watching Pet Sematary based on the Steven King novel recently for the first time in years, and I have to say, that as a parent that scene is probably one of the most psychologically disturbing things I have ever seen put to film. Worse than the dementedness of that centipede film or the harrowing scene in Sophies choice. The chances of having to choose between say, my wife or daughter in a situation of a death camp or freedom are so low that that scene didn't effect me much, but I think everyone can imagine losing track of someone for a couple of seconds. Definently will not be sleeping easy tonight.

So what is the most distressing/disturbing thing you have seen?

Ending of The Mist, that was just cruel :pinch:

Effective and surprising, but cruel.

Pet Semetary the movie wasn't bad but, as always, the book was better. In that scene you described too, very distressing, and i don't even have children.

I watched The Thin Red Line yesterday, and I found it to be pretty distressing. I love that movie, but so many people die. Not to say that I don't like that it is about 75% combat, but watching so many soldiers getting blown up gets depressing.

To be honest, the holocaust was so shocking that it hardly ever seems 'real' when portrayed. Watching Schindler's List it seems more like fiction than reality, not to say I am not depressed by it, just that it seems so far out of anything I am ever likely to experience that it is almost hard to relate to the events on screen, so much death it's almost desensitizing. Boy in the striped pajamas is an exception.

Well I don't understand your logic.

They seem real to me.

MLPFiM is the most disturbing thing to me, or maybe just the fan base is I'm not sure which is worse.

Not that it doesn't seem real, I just can't relate to it as much as say, Hotel Rwanda, because the atrocities were so over-the-top for lack of a better word.

The saddest, most distressing thing I ever saw on TV was a documentary called Bulgaria's Abandoned Children. It's on YouTube if you ever want to be reminded how lucky you are.

Watched the Grey a few weeks back. Pretty sad when so many men die so savagely. Not really bad but it made an impression.

A few things from the Nightmare on Elm Street movies were pretty nasty.

Oh IT was crazy. That movie had some parts that really made their mark. Excellent movie, especially for those looking for a scare.

I agree. Love that movie. Also, anytime an animal character dies. Like Sam from I Am Legend.

Step Up 3.

Why there was a Step Up 1 is beyond me but it's incredibly depressing seeing that there is now going to be a Step Up 3. What's worse is the fact that not only is there a Step Up 3 but it's also Step Up 3 in 3D. Seriously, WTF? WHY? It's so absurdly stupid that it's depressing.

Millennium second season ending.

Invasion of Body Snatchers.

Melancholia too, but I don't think it is that good. Antichrist is the better film while being equally disturbing. Since we are with Lars von Trier, all of his work I have seen qualifies. Manderlay, Dogville, Riget...

I thought Second Renaissance(from the Animatrix) was disturbing.

Interestingly, I think Memento is very disturbing. Gattaca too.

Changeling, Doubt.

Agora.

Constant Gardener. Actually all corporate corruption stuff. From The Man Who Fell to Earth to Michael Clayton.

Brazil.

Twelve Monkeys, The Game.

Full Metal Jacket.

Oldboy, kind of..

Regarding twists, Unbreakable and Sixth Sense contain some very disturbing revelations. Especially, Unbreakable's makes the movie.

Kubrick's 2001.

Mulholland Dr. and Lost Highway.

Jacob's Ladder.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Philadelphia.

Wargames.

Vertigo.

Carrie.

Stalker.

Pan's Labyrinth

Possession (1981)

Pi

Heavenly Creatures

Bridge to Terabithia

The Tragedy of Macbeth (1971)

The Machinist. One of my favorites.

War of the Worlds.

The Fly. And you can add more David Cronenberg to the list.

My personal favorites would be The Ghost and Darkness, it is based on a true story too. I think the director captured something really atmospheric here. The other would be Doppelg?nger. And John Carpenter's works. The Thing, Prince of Darkness, In the Mouth of Madness. And Return of the Living Dead III.

I would also like to add, Silence of the Lambs, The Dark Knight, Se7en, Training Day and Primal Fear based on the actor's terrific jobs, Anthony Hopkins, Heath Ledger, Kevin Spacey, Denzel Washington and Edward Norton.

Also I am a Stephen King fan so...

I find Dead Space and Silent Hill very disturbing from video games.

PS. They make so many good films. (Thank you film makers!!!)

I think the most [censored] up thing I've ever seen in a movie is the end of The Mist. I mean, i usually don't react to those type of things in films but, damn, that was crazy.

When film makers try to force emotions of sadness upon me I just get pissed and lose any relation I had to the movie(s).
Eg.:

Director: Now a child is dying. This is a sad event. Cry you mindless sheep (the audience)!
Child: Now I am sad and crying. Now I will cry "Daddy!"/"Mommy!" or some sugar-coated crap like that to further abuse your emotions, while apparently 'sad music' plays in the background.
Audience: "Noo! This is sad."
> Tears drip from (way too easily impressed) audience
Me: WTF is this crap? It svcks.

The atmosphere Full Metal Jacket is able to create while they roam the debris and ruins in the city... It's so depressing and it gives such a strong feeling. There is only silence, and the only things watching over you are the tall broken buildings.
