Necromancer Amulet: do you use it?

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 3:19 am

Hi,

Just wanted to know if people were using this or not when playing mages. I have a charachter that is "pure mage" and is specializing in all schools of magic (with only perks in magic skills) and I'm still low level (around 20 or so).

I'm am wearing an Adept Robe of Destruction and a Circlet of Destruction because I find destruction uses the most Magicka so far, but the Necromancer Amulet (the one taken from Calixto - Blood on the Ice) is pretty much the only necklace I have except some "gods" amulets (Talos, etc.).

My question: do you guys use it or not? I find the +50 magicka and 25% less cost magicka for conjuration quite appealing at my level, especially since I use conjuration regularly, but the -75% stamina and health regen seem quite big. I don't really need a lot of stamina I guess and I don't invest points in it but it is still usefull to escape some crazy situations. Low health regen could be trouble also in hard fights when you don't have time to use restoration.

So, do you guys use it or is the downside too much? If you do you use it, do you compensate with other gear? Thanks for the input.

At least it looks different than those generic silver or gold enchanted necklaces so it gest a bonus point for being unique ;-)

PS: I might not be able to respond to your comments for a little while but I will read them, so thanks for any input.

I don't use it on my mage, but thats more out of principal than because of the effects. While the item would be nice for the Conjuration reduction and magicka regeneration (he uses Atronach summons), my character hates necromancy, so he won't use an item associated with necromancy even if the bonuses would be beneficial to him.

Honestly, the stamina regeneration penalty means little for a mage except for sprinting, and health regeneration can actually be an advantage in a way because it makes you use Restoration more out of combat, and levels it faster (and health regen in battle is already negligable anyway).

The Necromancer's Amulet in Skyrim is horrible compared to its previous appearances in Morrowind and Oblivion. It's currently rotting in some chest in my house.

Yeah, I dont use it. The bonus just isnt worth the tradeoff. The Morrowind version was really nice, but I dont recall the if Oblivion version was any different.

On a mage, I would be likely to use it.

Nope. You can enchant a necklace with a far greater bonus without any of the drawbacks. Looks cool but that's it.

It does look unique, but the negatives outweigh the positives IMO. I have it in a dresser drawer in one of my houses. I occassionally take it out to look at it, but always put it back.

The funny thing is that I would use it were I primarily a conjurer, but IMO necromancy is only really good when you get Dead Thrall. At that point you won't be casting conjuration spells regularly so it's worthless.

with the right perks, without potions, you can get 62 magicka and 25% conjuration on a necklace, so, no.

Oh gods no.
I havent found a single pre-made item in Skyrim that didnt svck.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Necromancer%27s_Amulet#Necromancer.27s_Amulet is a good quest reward and fits the nomer 'ancient artifact'.

I see there's no love for it, and frankly I've tried it last night and I agree. It's not really worth it. It's not like I'm spamming conjuration endlessly.

Those who suggested enchanting and perks I know it's the way to go, but I'm still low level so I'm not at the level where I can enchant uber stuff. You could make a case for the amulet at low levels but at higher levels I guess it's not good.

A far cooler Necromancer's Amulet would be to increase the maximum number of summons by 1. Only then can it be truly called a legendary item.

On a similar note, the Gauldar Amulet should remove combat regeneration penalties to reflect it's lore of "making it's wearer near invincible" by allowing you to regenerate at high speed but doesn't save you from a x30 damage backstab which was how Galdur was killed.

My character used it until she got Gauldar's Amulet. The penalties did not bug me. The slow health regen allowed for more healing spells and Restoration skill improvement. It was/is better than Savros' amulet. She now uses Gauldar's Amulet because of what she went through to get it. She is proud of that thing. The zero weight doesn't hurt either.

Of course, I use it. Especially in it's superior form "Strange Amulet". Boy do I love keeping pointless items in my inventory. Cool questline.

And I did sell it to Calixto, I only made the stupid mistake of taking it back afterwards. Still gotta delete it. Well, I guess that's one of the main reasons why I bought the game for pc anyway ... :/

I wanted to use it on my Mystic Archer (Archery+Conjuration), since she wasn't pumping Magicka that much, but since she needed to run up Smithing and Enchanting anyway it was useless by the time she actually got it. As Merari pointed out, this is a problem for pretty much all pre-made items; while not necessarily bad in and of themselves, they are horribly outclassed by custom crafts with high skills.

Once you sell it to him it's no longer a Quest item, so if you've taken it back and don't want it you can just store it somewhere.

I don't use it. I don't like it when your heath gets dangerously low. I also don't use Restoraiton spells. Found or reward amulets are better for me. Enchanting is uncessary.

Wait a minut!! That "Strange Amulet" that you get during the Blood On Ice quest is a Necromancer's amulet? How do you know? Mine just says "Strange Amulet" but doesnt show any skills or perks from wearing it. Are you sure that is a necromancer's amulet?

Ah, I think you have to sell it to suspect, and then get it back from him later for the name to change?

My witch uses it. She prefers other do the fighting and if badly hurt will use a potion rather than rely on health regeneration to save her butt.
You can get it pretty early and unless you power level enchanting it will be better than anything you can enchant for a long time.

You need to sell it to Calixto during the quest - otherwise it bugs out and stays in its "strange form" permanently.

And unfortunately self-enchanted gear is far superior to this artifact. A pity, but what are mods for? ;)
