Probably one of the most famous people ever.

Even if people don't know who he is they sure know what he did.

There are people who are famous for their acting skills.

Then there are people who got famous by actually doing something constructive for society at large, this was such a man.

Wow, that came as a real shocker. Not sure what to say without sounding really inane, but it feels like the end of an era. :(

I'm utterly devastated...

At just before 3 AM UK time (after waiting from 20 past 10), on a warm an humid evening in 1969, Neil Armstrong restored my faith in humanity.

Some believe it was all acting though, and that man hasn't actually been at the moon yet.
Anyways, that's a topic on its own that is fruitless to even wander off to...

I just wanted to say that he experienced something remarkable and certainly got more than one life-time of experience from his one and only life here on earth. He won't be forgotten, that's certain.

Damn, that's depressing :(

At least one could find solace in the fact that he led a truly amazing and inspiring life.

:( I cannot ever imagine what he saw during the mission. At least he goes down in history and left a legacy.

So long, Armstrong. Humanity will never forget you, even if NASA basically has.

Bury him on the moon. He would like that.
That's not a bad idea, though his bones will have to wait a while for that.

Well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Doohan#Death (Star Trek) had something similar done after he passed away, so it's not really so far fetched an idea.

History will not forget him that's for sure. He was one of those few true living legends we all hear about.

Just caught this myself reading a person's journal over on Deviant Art. I'm way too young to remember this (born in 83), but it definitely believe it had ramifications that rippled across the world. It proved that humanity has a dream and a will to drive that dream to make it accomplished.

Only thing sadder than Neil passing away is the sorry state of NASA.

With the retirement of the Space Shuttle NASA is certainly going through a period of adjustment, but I still believe that they will recover and be on their way again soon. Don't forget that the Mars Curiosity rover landed not too long ago. While not manned, it is still something, so at least they're not sitting on their hands doing nothing because the shuttle is no longer in service.

I have been struck rather speechless by this. May he RIP. He will forever be remembered. I'm so happy to have felt a part of that whole experience even if it was via a TV set and miles away. It has a profound effect on my and many peoples lives. He reinforced a belief in us that our dreams can come true and that possibilities are abundant.
