I hate to say it, but I do believe Blu-Ray was a mistake for Sony that really cost them some serious $$$. The technology just wasn't affordable at the time, and I think they should have waited atleast 1 more year till the pushed their stuff out. Even though execs are touting that they recoup their money from longevity of consoles they have to face facts. When competition puts out a new console they have to attack/retaliate with the same method.
Well I don't know much about the economics of their console, but from a consumer standpoint I still think it was a pretty good move. The gaming industry needs more innovation, playing it safe isn't always the best solution.
Yup, HVDs are very impressive creatures from what i'm seeing being able to store up to 5x that of Blu-Ray discs possibly up to 10x or more. However, with that extra space and new technology just like Blu-Ray developers will have to figure out how to use it. With Blu-Ray it wasn't until 1 or 2 years that the PS3 had been out that developers really understood how to fully utilize the capabilities of the discs + technology.
I really don't think we need that kind of space for current, or even future games. Blu-ray was a nice step up from the tiny 5-9GB DVDs, but terabytes of data for a single game seems very unlikely.
It's a good thing I'm with Sony. I even play Bethesda games on PS3.
But c'mon, if this happens and Microsoft does this, I would be happy seeing that company run through the ground.
I don't understand this mentality at all... Having a PS3 this generation doesn't mean you're obligated to stick with Sony.
Brand loyalty is meaningless in the gaming industry, because each console generation is different.
