Nintendo 64

Diddy Kong Racing was my first N64 game and remains one of my favourite racing games of all time. A lot like Mario Kart but with more stuff to do in it, including aeroplanes and hovercraft. F-Zero X is another absolute classic. Both have ace multiplayer modes.

The best platformers were the Rare ones - Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64. Also worth a mention is Space Station: Silicone Valley, which despite a major bug that makes it technically impossible to complete (regardless of the problems it engenders, I think patches for console games are a good thing) was still tonnes of fun and had hours of varied gameplay.

The best multiplayer game, obviously, is Goldeneye. I think it would be disgusting and uncouth to suggest otherwise. Perfect Dark too.

Some of my other favourites were Blast Corps, Lylat Wars (I think that has a 2 player co-op mode, maybe a 4 player battle mode - can't remember), Body Harvest, Turok 2, Rogue Squadron, the Pokemon games (Stadium and Snap)... Probably a couple more - can't remember.

I never played it, but I'm pretty sure the magazine I read used Shadows of the Empire as the yardstick by which all terrible games were judged (that is; "almost as bad as SotE", etc).

No way, I watched my friend play that game from start to finish atleast 5 times. It's a good game.

Goldeneye
Turok
Super Smash Bros.
Rogue Squadron (not multiplayer but still fun as hell)
Mario Party (just don't get the first one. There's one minigame in there that WILL, just by the way it was designed, break your controller.)
The World is Not Enough (not quite as good as Goldeneye, but still very fun)
Perfect Dark
Pokemon Stadium is good, but you'll only get the full experience if you have a link cable and a Game Boy pokemon game compatible with it. Nintendo loves excuses to sell extra accessories.

Golden Eye and Perfect Dark

Even if they have already been mentioned before those are 2 excellent solid games. Best part is Golden Eye is multiplayer almost being the genesis imho of multiplayer gaming on consoles due to how great it was. Perfect Dark may not be as memorable as Golden Eye, but it does take things up another notch. You can set new combat modes, restrict weapons, and add in a bunch of goodies having 4 player fun. Only thing I will say is that you'll want that RAM/Processor increase addon that drops down into the body of the console. It helps out a bit and would be worth the $15 to $20 that it might cost to get it.

I'll also throw my hat in with the "Quest 64 is terrible" folk.

To sum up my experience with the game, I arrived at the first boss which was ridiculously high leveled and difficult. I had to grind for a very long time before I was able to beat him. After that, I figured that would be protocol for the game, so I did a bunch of grinding in the next area to prepare myself for the boss, only to find that I was mostly over-powered for the rest of the game. The story and gameplay were nothing exceptional either, so it ended up being an average game with a stupid learning curve.

I really enjoyed Quest 64. I diddnt get far, and lost interest in it, but for some reason I liked it. Especially for what was available on the 64 throughout its lifespan and its time.

Mystical Ninja.
Hybrid Heaven.
Gauntlet Legends.
Kirby 64
Rainbow Six
South Park
Turk Dinasaur Hunter
Yoshi Story

Winback!!!!!!!!!!!

If your looking for multiplayer

Starcraft 64 :-)
Monster truck Madness 64

WWF No Mercy
Road Rash 64
Vigilante 8

There is a tank game, I forgot its name, but I remember its multitplayer being a blast

For anyone who played Goldeneye 007. Did any of you choose Oddjob in multiplayer? That's like the biggest dike-move you can ever do in a N64 game. :P

Superman 64 is pretty good, too. It kind of flew under the radar, but it's worth getting and playing for yourself.

I did that all the time when playing with my brother, since he was much better than me.

Oddjob was the little midget with the top hat. He was basically immune to melee attack and shooting him was way trickier than any other character due to his low stature.

I used to choose generic soldiers in the multiplayer, because some of them were cool. :P

Let's not forget "Shadows Of The Empire".

Some people were put off because of the difficulty but for someone who grew up watching the original "Star Wars" trilogy's cinematic releases this was the most amazing video game we'd ever played at the time.

It might not seem like the most visually impressive title in retrospect but at the time of release the graphics were on par with the best stuff that's out there today.

The sense of immersion is awesome hitting it's climix in the Jet Pack battle with Boba Fett.

"F1 World Grand Prix" is still probably the greatest racing game ever made to date putting the likes of both "Gran Tourismo" and "Forza Motorsport" to shame.

With the rumble pack you would get feedback from all four wheels as you mounted the curbs. You had qualifying laps for starting position and tire wear and engine wear was a factor.

You not only could replay every lap of your 60 - 70 lap full Grand Prix race... the game came with every race of the 1997 Grand Prix installed and you could replay them to your heart's content either just watching the AI repeat history as it happened or change the course of history yourself.

"Extreme G" was an extremely good futuristic motorbike racer and an honourable mention goes out to "Mace: The Dark Age" a qhirky 3D fighter that was actually pretty cool to play.

If you can track any of the above down they are "must plays" for the Nintendo 64.
