It's not racing or platformer, but if you like shooting, get Perfect Dark. It has a great multiplayer (with bots).

It's not a N64 without Goldeneye but other games you might want to take a look at:
Star Wars:Rouge Squadron.
Extream-G series (I like EG1 better).
Legend of Zelda: OoT and MM
Doom 64
Those are all I can think of.

Goldeneye/Perfect Dark will be very fun for you and your friends. These are games to have sleep overs for.

Zelda, both of em.

Ogre Battle 64 if you can get your hands on it.

Resident Evil 2.

Winback

Conkers Bad Fur Day.

Mario Party

Diddy Kong Racing.

F Zero X. Dirty soundtrack. Even the SNES F Zero game had sick tunes.

a lot of my suggestions have already been made

kirby and the Crystal Shards
Conker's Bad Fur day
Paper Mario (more an RPG, but if you've got Zelda...)
Jet Force Gemini (a shooter, but a good one)
Diddy King Racing

The thing about the N64 is that it has a lot of great games, but there isn't a concentration of greats in each genre. There're three or four platformers and that's it, there're three or four shooters and that's it etc. so you really just have to get all the greats regardless of genre, you'll like them none-the-less

like everyone else here says, you should invest in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark and Majora's mask. Just make sure you have the expansion slot in the front. It's a little red pack inserted into the front where the normal jumper pack would be. It improves performance in other games, and in a select few is necessary to run them. The former being the two best examples.

If you like racing, F-Zero X has more than a lot of it.

Mega Man 64 (if you've never played Mega Man Legends on PSone)
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Calibur
Pokemon Snap*

*Why has this not gotten sequels yet? I've been waiting 12 years, damn it.

And when you play Goldeneye, always use the manual aiming because real men use the clunky manual aiming.

Speaking of Turok the first two games are a must play for any N64 fans, Turok 3 is ok and Turok Rage Wars is----meh.

Diddy Kong Racing was my first N64 game and remains one of my favourite racing games of all time. A lot like Mario Kart but with more stuff to do in it, including aeroplanes and hovercraft. F-Zero X is another absolute classic. Both have ace multiplayer modes.

The best platformers were the Rare ones - Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64. Also worth a mention is Space Station: Silicone Valley, which despite a major bug that makes it technically impossible to complete (regardless of the problems it engenders, I think patches for console games are a good thing) was still tonnes of fun and had hours of varied gameplay.

The best multiplayer game, obviously, is Goldeneye. I think it would be disgusting and uncouth to suggest otherwise. Perfect Dark too.

Some of my other favourites were Blast Corps, Lylat Wars (I think that has a 2 player co-op mode, maybe a 4 player battle mode - can't remember), Body Harvest, Turok 2, Rogue Squadron, the Pokemon games (Stadium and Snap)... Probably a couple more - can't remember.
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
I never played it, but I'm pretty sure the magazine I read used Shadows of the Empire as the yardstick by which all terrible games were judged (that is; "almost as bad as SotE", etc).

My favourite games for multiplayer on the N64 were Perfect Dark and Diddy Kong Racing

Banjo Kazooie was one of the best games ever to be released imo as well so track that down as well as a copy of Majora's Mask

And beat it on the hardest difficulty. Unlock all the cheats too. Those challenges were fun, like a pre achievement/trophy achievements in video games. Well one implemented well for a console.

Wow, unbelievably no-one has mentioned one of my favorite racing games: Cruise'n'Usa, and Cruise'n'World(or something like that). Both are great racing games, I certainly always enjoyed them when I was younger :)

Most have been said to death, but Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire was such an epic game, I have to make sure you saw it.
