I'm Not Happy with The Elder Scrolls Franchise

Post » Fri Dec 28, 2012 10:20 am

I don't really need to say much since the video says it all for me in a very good manner which does not alienate console or pc players. Please discuss this topic maturely and do not turn this thread into an arguement.

I'll look it up, thanks. Just want to put forward the idea to Bethesda so they might further advance future Elder Scrolls games.

Oh did I sound mad?
I was just making the point that the whole "dumbing down" arguement has been in play since Oblivion.

Quite frankly it sounds likea lot of whining and nit-picking, and the guy has a fairly offensive manner about him, whic sorta make the few valid points he does make seem petty.

Morrowind's systems was fine, but Oblivion just tried to 'clean' it up, if that makes sense. Oblivion's systems were okay, but some of Morrowind's could be borrowed.

Skyrim's system was dumbed down but only to try and get newer players.

Bethesda is not, in my opinion, dumbing it down more and more. They'll probably go back to a system more akin to Oblivion instead. It's not a pattern.

Lot of good points. And really, I won't be surprised to learn that Beth is killing (ie ending development) the TES series, because quite frankly, while it has been a successful series, it doesn't rake in the CoD cash. At the end of the day, the RPG market is still a niche market, better suited to Indie developers.

Again, there's nothing brilliant about this video. He brings up some good points, and then stomps all over them with "BURN TEH CASUALS, KIDS R TEH NOOBS". Instead of suggesting reasons for flaws - including time constraints, budget, and so on - he finds it easier to blame everything on the mythical 'casuals' who are ruining his supposed 'hardcoe' video game series.

If he's really this dissatisfied with the series, then he should go and find another. Meanwhile, we casual kids will continue to enjoy our shallow, meaningless casual game.

Err. No. Over 10 millions copies sold disagrees with you completely.

It's been around since Morrowind. Some Daggerfall fans hated Morrowind because Morrowind was dumbed down compared to Daggerfall.

This is because many people think the more frustrating the game is, the more intelligent the game is. When it makes things that shouldn't be hard in the first place easier, it's "dumbing down".

I really don't see how you are picking up on this. He flat out states he still likes the TES series, and he doesn't have an issue with people playing on consoles. Did you watch the entire video and actually listen to his points before reacting in the knee jerk fashion you accuse him of having?

Of course. I watched it when it was posted the first time. But notice how almost every time he makes a point, he flashes that photo of two kids with controllers and blames them for the 'dumbing down' of the series?

He says he doesn't have a problem with consoles, but contradicts himself.

I agree with this.
They simplified some stuff, then it is "dumbing down". I played Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.
And in the end is a matter of taste. I loved Morrowind and Skyrim is practically at the same level. But I dont liked Oblivion.
Games changes as the industry change, and each game is unique.

Wow, there's too many things wrong with this statement...
Saying that RPG's are "better suited" for indie developers is so damn Hipster it makes my [censored]ing teeth hurt.

It's the same with music. It irritates me to no end when people say 'I used to like that song, but it's too mainstream now'.
Mainstream=/= bad.

That's not going to happen. In spite of the complaints about "dumbing down," Skyrim is far and away Bethesda's best selling title to date. Maybe it doesn't make the volume of cash CoD does, but still, if they're going to kill the series on that note, they may as well just shutter the studio and get out of the business completely.

Um are you sure you want to go out on a limb and say such a . . . Well, I'm not going to say "dumb" thing. Let's say misinformed, shall we?

The only reason CoD sells so much is: They pump them out with frightening regularity, each one basically the same. They don't take 5 years to develop a game. No siree.

They'll pump that bilge out and flog that dead horse until the end of time, and the crowd will still throw money at it. Because they think it's cool.
