do NOT use the so called "d3d9.dll fix"

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:10 pm

With my low-end Geforce 8600M GT 256 mb the dll has been a miracle for me so far. Much smoother framerates, with more graphics details on than before.

Have been monitoring GPU temp during play and hasn't surpassed 70 degrees Celcius, in my laptop so that's not too hot right?

I have my 5850 OC'd from the stock 725/1000 settings to 975/1300 with stock cooling and I use the .dll. No temp issues here.

Seriously people, download it, scan it for yourself and ignore anyone who says it doesn't work or isn't safe. It's fine.

With all due respect, this community knows more about this engine than the guy at Tweak Guides. So yeah, I'd rather follow the advice of the community dedicated to improving this game than someone that played through it once and forgot about it afterwards.

How in the flower ****ing hell does a DLL cause "long term damage". This guy sounds like a moron talking like that.

It may spoof an older video card (mine still shows up as a GTX 480) and it may cause lower graphical features (I don't notice any difference) but it turned my game from unplayable to playable. And until we see a patch from Bethesda that fixes this issue directly, this is our best bet,

As I pointed out earlier, it's quite possible that a DLL would be capable of messing with your cards auto fan speed settings, stopping it from cooling properly, and ending up cooking your card. I'm not saying that this happens, just that it's possible and something people should have been aware of and keeping an eye on before downloading something like this.

Now you're simply clutching at straws there. Everyone should have thermal monitoring running, period. Fan bearings can wear and slow them down a lot without drying up and starting to squeal. Heat sinks can clog up with dust and lint rapidly and become unable to do the needed cooling, all without problems caused by bad firmware (Geforce 8n00s) or any maliciously coded software.

Not sure that's possible. Once mine exceeds a certain temperature it automatically adjusts fan speed. Doesn't matter what I'm using.

I don't use it. I don't need it, since the ATI 10.10c hot fix. But, I *think* that it only spoofs the video card so that FONV recognizes it as an older card. I don't *think* that is affects your system functionality at all.

Correct. Once it's deleted from the NV folder all effects it has are removed. (And those affects are game only, nothing system.)

True. I've been using it since day one (GTX 470) and haven't had a single issue with it, being performance drops or image quality being compromised. There is nothing wrong with using this as a temporary fix till Beth/Obsidian puts out an official fix.

EDIT:http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/1978/enb2010102919626.png is a screenshot of that poor image quality that this DLL is supposed to produce.

It's been discussed before.
The guy who wrote that really doesn't know what he is talking about.
The fix works extremely well for a large number of us with absolutely no difference in image quality and zero long-term issues.
Overall no reason not to use, and far more convenient than using the console every session.

LoL, heheh...
Yeah.
Ghazi doesn't know what he's talking about...?

Christ, did you guys just stop reading after the first sentence or what? I specifically said that I wasn't referring to this DLL, I was just saying that it is perfectly possible for a DLL to affect temperature monitoring on your graphics card (and therefore any software that displays or uses those readings) which could cause your card to overheat. It is generally good advice not to just randomly download DLLs if you don't know what they are doing.

Since the .dll fix for ATI cards came out, I've been using it, and it has worked wonders. I could only get 34 fps max while in the wasteland, and down to 15-20 while around NPC's. Now I am getting 60 in the wasteland and 30-35 around NPC's. I am also able to run it on higher settings since having it on medium before gave me terrible fps, so imagine what high was like. I'm now unning on ultrahigh like my vid card should be.

I've had no problems with graphics being worse, as I said I'm running on ultrahigh now instead of medium. I monitor my video card, cpu heat, everything I can. And nothing has changed except I'm actually capable of playing New Vegas.

And I play offline until I hear that there is a new patch, so when they make a fix for it, or should I say if, I will simply remove the .dll file. I don't see what long term problems this will cause. Maybe he should have stated some in that article instead of pulling a Glenn Beck and stating things without sources to back them up.

a newer version of the fix is available which only disables facial emotions instead of also altering the shader package used by some cards

That's from a new update at tweakguides
Now, does anybody have an idea where can you find that fix he's talking about?

Again, this "better fix" he's talking about causes more loss in visual quality and less of an increase in performance than the DLL. He's just one track minded "DLLs are bad mmmkay?", refuses to actually look to see if it does what it says on the tin.

i am 47

been a gamer since the first tennis game..remember that ?,they use it as a joke these days.
i dont want to add up how many hours i spent trying to tweak hardware costing £50 to do what £100 hardware does.

BUT i can promise you this,20 years from now you will wish you had just gone out and bought a better graphics card or whatnot, instead of wasting all this time pissing about trying to squeeze a few drops of tasty goodness from an old sauce bottle.

just go buy a new bottle.

lifes too short.

then again,i could be fulla [censored],and you may want to waste all this precious time thats slowly ticking away.
theres no reload a save on life ;)

ps...this card cost me £105 years ago and still havent found a game to kill it.

HIS [H487FN1GP] HD 4870 Fan 1GB (256bit) GDDR5 PCIe.

its running this game full bells and whistles at 1920x1080 with no lag or stutter with the latest ati drvs.

40 years old and I remember playing Pong on my old ATARI

Some folks may be in need of new hardware. Some may even be able to afford it while others are stuck with what they have. Let's not forget that there are members here that are as young as 13, and are not capable of splurging on new hardware since their system does not actually belong to them, but really their parents/guardian.

Myself, I just got done building a new system with the hardware that enables me to play New Vegas on ultra high settings, and I still had issues with lagging around NPC's. I've tried tweaking the INI file with minimal results which is why I opted for the evil DLL file. After DL'ing that file I no longer had any problems, and my computer has not gained sentience or spontaneously burst into flames...yet.

As previously mentioned the DLL is only a temporary fix till the Devs. get around to fixing it

EDIT: running this game with a GTX 470

Yeah that's right, everyone should piss away £100 on hardware to try and fix a software fault. You're a genius.

I don't give a fly Golden Gecko what it does, it works. With this, and a few other community fixes I'm running this game full bore at 1920x1200 and I'm at 60 FPS 98% of the time.

Ditto. Only reason I'm still playing the game is these fixes.

Naff off Rimmer you tool......(oh sorry BSC SSC BLAH BLAH nobber)...You obviously know nothing. I am using a pretty top end system and ended up with all of the above, So you can stuff your £100 graphics card....I think a GTX295 should just be able to run this ?.....You have obviously only played 10+ year old games for your G card not to max out lol.....

Anyway.................................

It's this simple, folks. If the fix works for you, great. If it doesn't, you delete it, no harm no foul.

I want to make sure I'm clear on something. If I want to fiddle in an .ini file and have my changes stick, is the default.ini file the one I should mess around with and the only one?

the "fix" didn't work for me, if anything it reduced my frame-rate, introduced stutter, and I swear my textures have gotten the jaggies. Removing the dll hasn't made that stuff go away either. Bizarre.

I guess it's a case of "if it ain't broke don't fix it", at least for me anyway.

You want to edit the Fallout_default.ini in the NV directory. That is the one the launcher will use in game.
