Don't know which planet you're living on, because this year had some pretty sweet games.

Seriously? This year was great. Looking at the indies alone:

Minecraft
Terraria
Magicka
Frozen Synapse
Orcs Must Die
Bastion
Trine 2

For the mainstream releases we have Skyrim, the first TES game in 5 years, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the first worthy sequel to the original Deus Ex from 11 years ago, The Witcher 2, Batman: Arkham City, Portal 2, Saints Row 3, Battlefield 3 and more.

IIRC 2010 was a lot less exciting than that. Especially for PC gamers.

Frozen Synapse

Did not know anyone knew about that game.

I guess other than Minecraft and Skyrim (just because TES has such long dev cycles), I can't think people will be playing any of this year's titles later down the road.

Are you going to be playing any of those games 5 years from now? Aside from maybe Skyrim, I highly doubt it.
That's quite a test for a game.

Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Peace Walker. Also, for myself at least, Megaman 10. Mmm... Megaman 10..... Love this game. Downloaded some DLC, set me off on another Megaman spree again. Going to have to play through the entire series again (except maybe Megaman 8).
Funny, I wouldn't consider any of those games that I'd play in 5 years. Heck, the only one I'm interested in is RDR, but I play on PC.

That's rather weak support of your hypothesis.

Witcher 2, I will revisit. Arkham City will probably get 2. Skyrim will get 3 or more. TOR can be played for years assuming it holds my interest. Deus Ex Human revolution will get a revist or two. Shogun 2 will be played for years online and in co-op with my friend. This is just off the top of my head, not to mention all of the other good games that will get at least a once through and some time on their multiplayer if they have it. People rewatch movies all the time and read books again. Why not play games again if you enjoy them? What is this some kind of heresy to only play something more than once? Are you that vain, spoiled, and lacking in attention span?

Have you actually played Peace Walker?

I guess we have to agree to disagree, I don't think many people will be playing those games much in 5 years either.

I disagree. If anything, to me, it's the odd years that are awesome and the even ones that are meh.

2009: Dragon Age: Origins, Demons' Souls, Overlord II, Prototype, inFamous, Trine.

2010: Mass Effect 2, Fallout: New Vegas, God of War 3.

2011: All the New Vegas DLCs, Dark Souls, Skyrim, Bastion, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Trine 2, inFamous 2, Catherine, Disgaea 4, Arkham City, Saints Row The Third, The Witcher 2. And Team Fortress 2 going free to play was all kinds of awesome.

Then again 2012 is showing a lot of promise. Prototype 2, Guild Wars 2, Last Guardian, Grand Theft Auto V, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, and Dragon's Dogma. Looks like we're in for another good year.

Dungeon Defenders alone makes 2011 a good year for gaming, add Portal 2, Battlefield 3, and Forza 4 on top of that and it was an amazing year.

I'm not saying play the game for 5 years, but I'm saying a game you would keep and come back to and play through 5 years from now.
I probably won't even be playing Skyrim 5 years from now....

I thought it was pretty good. I was disappointed in Skyrim, but also grabbed a hold of:

Deus Ex: HR
Dark Souls
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Uncharted 3
Dead Island (rental)

Nothing else has really interested me much, but I'm sure plenty of people enjoyed Portal 2, Battlefield 3, The Witcher 2 (now this one caught my eye, but, heh, weak PC, no PS3 port... what can I do), Saints Row 3, etc.

Next year's going to be pretty good. So far, I've got the following on a watch list:

Ni No Kuni
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Risen 2

Also, I'm really hoping luck will show favor and provide a late 2012 NA release date for Final Fantasy Versus XIII. I want that game so badly.

No idea where the OP's getting the idea that this year svcked.

A new Zelda game, a new TES, Portal 2, hell I got Batman: Arkham City free with the purchase of my computer and thought I'd hate it and ended up LOVING it.

If that's a BAD year, I'm waiting to see what the OP thinks is a good year...

Not necessarily a bad year, this year has been good video game wise with a couple of busts (Dungeon Siege III, Dragon Age 2) and quite possibly one of the best games ever made with Skyrim.

This reminded me of how in Simon Pegg's (amazing) sitcom "Spaced", his nerdy character says all the odd-numbered Star Treks svck, and then Simon Pegg ended up being in Star Trek 11 many years later.

I liked it. Spent quite a few hours marching for Macragge, purging xeno and daemon filth in the name of the Emperor.

2010, 2008, 2004, 2001. Probably don't need to go back further than that.

Wait a minute... I'm pretty sure 2001 is an odd number. Did you just disprove your own question?

2004 was awesome though.

If I get any of those games, I believe I will still be playing five years down the road - because my GAME purchase cycle's so long.

I still bust out my Xbox to play Halo: Combat Evolved, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Star Wars: Battlefront II, and just about every other game. I still play Star Fox 64 on my ancient N64.

I'd be playing Oblivion if my computer that could run it didn't crap out on me, and if I hadn't killed it with "Never Again" mods.

And damn Skyrim for Keeping me away from my Space Marine :P
