Older RPGs

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 8:57 pm

I always create a similar thread every year, but it's that time of the year again.

So, what are your recommendations for an older RPG to play? No real definition of 'old' here, pre-2006 perhaps? I was looking at games around the '99 era.

I'm asking here because I've been looking for a good game these past 3 days but I can't find anything. For the record, these are the games I can think of right now which I have played or am playing right now:

Plansescape (playing atm)
Arcanum
Morrowind
Daggerfall
Diablo
Diablo 2
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate 2
Fallout
Fallout 2
Arx Fatalis
X-Com (not an RPG)
Jagged Alliance 2
Gorky 88
Gothic 2
Gothic 3
V:tM Bloodlines
System Shock 2

I think I've played all the major ones. I've looked at the geneforge series, avernum series, heroes of might and magic, and ultima, but none of them look interesting to me (the gameplay). I also tried some Final Fantasy games but I didn't like them, bar the SNES ones.

Anyway...fire away!

Not so much an RPG but you can download the original Syndicate from Good Old Games now without having to mess around with all that DosBox crap. It's a pretty good game and lauded in it's day; check it out on youtube.

What about Icewind Dale? Since you were asking for old RPGs. Never played any though!

Ultima Underworld series (spinoff the the Ultima games, precursors to Arx Fatalis)
Darklands (very non-linear RPG with randomized quests, influenced the creation of TES series)
System Shock 1 & 2 (similar to Bioshock where you're seemingly the only sane person left, but have actual RPG elements)

I've heard some good things about Fallout 1, and I'm interesting in getting it. Anyone else who wants to share their opinions on that game? Is it a good RPG, is it still a good game at this date, would I get enjoyment out of it if I loved Fallout 3, New Vegas and it's universe?

Sorry I've got no suggestions for old RPG's, but I'm curious about them.

Nope. Big legal mess over who actually owns the rights to the game, so it can't be put up anywhere. I hope EA sorts it out at some point and puts it up on GOG. They probably would put it up there, if they manage to sort it out. It's the http://www.gog.com/en/wanted there.

gamesas FO 3 was designed to be an extension of Fallout 1. NV however was designed extension of FO 2, seeing the dev did design FO franchise in the first place, it did bring out a lot of the atmosphere of its predecesor. Fallout 1 and 2 will never be obselete, the freedom and possibilities you can achieve in certain things are simply immense, a key no modern game would accomplish without ditching the graphic hog these days. It is not just an old RPG, it is THE RPG.

Betrayal at Krondor. It's a PC game from 1993. It won Game of the Year and it was the first 3D open world game. It was my favorite game for about 10 years. It was the first RPG I ever played that had a real story (penned by Raymond E. Feist, author of the Riftwar Saga books) and characters. The characters in your party would come and go throughout the story, just like in a book, and they'd develop, and you'd be walking along and suddenly they'd start having a conversation just like in KOTOR or Dragon Age. Of course nowadays there are CG cutscenes and this is common, but this was the first time seeing it. This was the first game I played where weapons degraded and you had to repair them, and you actually had to eat every day and food could spoil, and you had to sleep because you got tired, not just to heal. You can download the game for free now if you do a search.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/98800/ is an awesome Roguelike RPG with a nice sense of humor. And easy to get into, if you've never played roguelikes before. You can get a ton of hours out of this. It's not old obviously, it came out last year, but it's based on an old genre.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/107310/?snr=1_7_suggest__13 is a nice little parody game of old school JRPGS. So there's probably some fun to be had there if you've played those kind of games in the past.

Maybe give Troika's Temple of Elemental Evil a try. It's the one game of their I have yet to play, but it seems like a nice old school RPG.

It's very old school and very hard if you don't know its flow already. Also, some poor design of that game is that you should play a good alignment team that helps people a lot or combat evil instead of talk your way out. Because if you don't, you won't have enough exp and level enough to face next random encounter that you cannot resolve by persuasion.

EDIT: Also, remember to have at least one chaotic good fighter, it's essential at the end.

I am intrigued by both of these. Thank you Pov.

Also, check out Unepic.

I've played the demo, it's really awesome.

I always forget about ToEE. I need to try it for its TB combat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizardry_8 if ya into old-school dungeon crawling team based RPG with modern graphic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_ex for the best overall cyberpunk/action rpg. Pick up the http://thenamelessmod.com/editors_choice/ after playing Deus Ex 4 or 5 time as it is its own game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights_2 for an RPG based on Dungeons & Dragons / Forgotten Realms. If ya get Neverwinter Nights 2, get the expansion, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights_2:_Mask_of_the_Betrayer; overall decent theme, choice and consequences, and decent character and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights_2:_Storm_of_Zehir as it has that "JRPG" feel to it and being able to customize your party.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic 1 and 2 - RPG of Star Wars; great story many choices here and there. If you getting KotoR 2, try getting the Restoration content and play as it was intend by the good people of Obsidian.

You mention Diablo 2, but did you try Diablo 2 with mods like Median XL or Eastern Sun? Both overhaul offer high playability for single player mode.
