sounds like the OP went into this game thinking 'The Orignals were better then these new 3D games, bet this will be as bad as Fallout 3" and because of that they only saw the problems instead of trying ot enjoy the game.

New Vegas is much closer to the original fallouts (though i agree i wouldnt mind having a 0 - 200% skill system...that was cool in the originals).

As stated before, you said alot of things about the original fallouts that werent even right, Fallout has never had GURPS, and its always had a level cap.....

I admit i was never a fan before fallout 3 (as i dicovered the series after isometric views had already become retro), but AAA games nowadays will have to have full 3D worlds if they are to sell at all (else the game doesnt sell and the company goes bankrupt and you never see another game in the series again), this means there is less room for content.

Wow, that has to be the most senseless rant I've seen so far. Most of all, I don't understand why you felt it was important for us to know your age, nearly 30, woo, I'm awed. Er... if that's the yardstick, I beat you by more than 10 years so I win??? My dad is in his 60s and loves fallout, so he wins... hold on, what were we talking about again?

This wins ^

Fallout 3 was made to cater to people with low-attention spans? Apparently you have your head stuck somewhere the sun isn't shining because you are way off course. Every Fallout game was good in it's own right (speaking of 1, 2, 3, & NV).. however I would take Fallout 3 and Fallout NV over the others any day. Yes they were fun, but I have never had so much fun with a Fallout game and all the little areas to discover, extra convos to engage in, info on terminals to read that tell a story, etc.. as I have with Fallout 3 and even more so now than ever, Fallout: New Vegas. Not to mention all of the decisions you have which impact the game and the game-play itself really makes it feel like a true RPG with FPS elements. Guns are far from useless; learn how to use different ammo types. Unarmed/Melee has a risk and that's getting close to enemies before getting shot up too much or getting hit by a pack of Deathclaws. Guns you mostly shoot from medium to long range (other than shotguns in general) and have many ammo types to choose from. I've made character builds of both and they both have their perks. V.A.T.S. is great. I thought it was great in Fallout 3 anad I still think it's great in Fallout: New Vegas. You just need to know WHEN to use it as opposed to just heavily relying on it.

There is no game out there that will please everyone to the OP, you are entitled to be displeased however apparently some people have expressed why they disagree with you.

blah blah blah,

Dear creator I guess your old fans just want a rehash of FO1 and 2, please stop appeasing the masses and make the cool sub-par (not that the first two were) point and click adventures again. Then we won't have to deal with 400,000 threads about how you ruined the game.

I love it though, props devs!

If you hated FO3 so much (it almost ruined the series for you, you write) why the hell did you buy this game? Almost every preview said it was going to look/feel like FO3....

I am a somewhat older gamer myself (although there are no older gamers, because gaming has become something for everyone nowadays) but not all what's in the past is good or the best.

On a Microcosmic level the FO Vegas writing is better but in the Macrocosmic level FO3's storyline was superior, ok you are trying to save the entire wasteland and purify the water for everyones benefit, Epic! I got shot in the head, lets chase those bad men down. mmmmmmm which was an overall better storyline???? Vegas does bring back that old FO feeling I'm sure but really FO3's Epic storyline is crap? ha ha ha ha ha :)

How dare you say that FO3 Players have short attention spans. FO3 was my FIRST Fallout game, but I took my time and spent hours reading up on lore. I now know tons about the Fallout Universe. Its does slighty annoy me however, that some people claim to know EVERYTHING about Fallout when they have only played FO3.

In my opnion, you have a short attention span. Fallout 1, 2, 3, Tactics etc all had level caps. The GURPS was never even used in Fallout!!

Well it kinda is your own fault for not doing research on the game.
I miss the way the old games were as well, and hopefully they'll let some studio do a spin-off which is turnbased, bird eye view, and a lot more unforgiving rpg mechanics and dicerolls.
But as it is, nope, Fallout will never be truly Fallout again.
So it's either to adapt or stay locked up with nostalgia.
I chose both.
So I'm having a blast with New Vegas but would certainly like it to be turn-based, isometric view and completely decided upon dicerolls instead of player action.

Like Alex man, FO3 was my first fallout game it was what introduced me to the fallout universe and I have loved every second of me being there.

and i'm none to impressed at the short attention span part (well I don't agree with the whole article)

Have you played (should stop mentioning this game :P) Stalker SoC? I've spent 5 days in my current game in the cordon (first area) alone with no thoughts of leaving yet and have only completed the rescue nimble quest. Short attention span I think not ;)

NV starts off with you thinking your going to chase the bad men down, but it escalates into something bigger than yourself and if thats not your fancy you on paper make it about yourself.

FO3 was yeah about water and a broken people living in the past and many many factors that didnt make sense.
once again to me Fo3's story was crap or rather poorly executed.

To me the original Fallout is still one of my favorite games of all time, and New Vegas does a good job in bringing back the deep moral dilemma's that made the FO1 so great in the first place...

So no, I do not think the Devs have ruined the game at all...

I've play'd the Fallout series starting with Fo1 back in early 2002-3 I loved the story the atmousphere and some of the silly ness of it. I found Fo3 to be a little dissapointing but still very good and enjoyable, and New Vegas to be what I feel 3 shoud've been minus some of the bugs lol. I did read your hole post and it's mostly seeming to be on skill points and level cap, all I have to say is get it on pc and mod it if those are your main issues. Yes you shouldn've have to mod it but if you want the game you want then go ahead although I feel it's good enough without mods anyway (not that it stops me had so many mods in fo3 after completing it lol).

For the first time, ever, the original poster of this thread has ruined Forums for me forever. Thank you.

Here I joined this site, thinking I would be surrounded by fellow lovers of the genre, some old... some new... each with differing ideas and opinions about the things that make Fallout so great. New players (and myself alongside some other older players) have fallen in love with being able to actually walk around THROUGH the wastelands of America, rather than simply above it.

Do we thing the new games are perfect? Well... some of us do. But forgive them their pride and arrogance... they believe this out of love.

Older players seem to be slowly warming up to the idea, now, too... especially thanks to New Vegas. The storyline is more in line with the classic games... traits are back... and really, the whole thing is beginning to feel more like the old days of Fallout... but changing. Progress is a scary thing, though, and people always have opinions on how they change. It is important to share these opinions an feelings about that which we all enjoy... it helps us grow.

But the author... oh... no. He came in here with his closed-minded ways and his sharp tongue and his uninformed rhetoric... and he did precisely what it is a troll always does... rant about something incoherently in order to get people all riled up. And, like clockwork, everyone obliged him. Everyone got up in arms... and now people are talking about the age of gamers, and insulting the troll, and in general doing precisely what it was that he expected. I really hope someone comes here and tells me I'm entirely off base. Maybe I've missed some understanding of the social code of forums... or a .pdf file I could download for reference. At least that way I could be bothered to come back and resume posting.

So alas... until then, no more forums for me.

...

Yeah... no. Even when put into -reasonable- terms, that kind of a rant just makes you look like an ass.

Hypothesis: Taking a completely illogical rant and applying it to an otherwise reasonable argument can make it reasonable.
Results: No matter how you look at it, you still come out looking like a complete jerkoff.

Hypothesis disproved.

Back to the drawing (New Vegas Mods) board.

To quote the OP:

"QQ, I don't know what I am talking about. I am also going to call Fallout 3 and it's players names."

I got into Fallout 3 and "the universe" because I was looking for a post apocalyptic world to explore. Fallout 3 really delivered. To be honest, a lot of your "fallout cannon" doesn't interest me. 1950's themed laser guns, super mutants, giant ants, robots, aliens, 200+ year old ghouls, and so forth. i don't hate it, but it isn't very "realistic" or "believable." I don't mind artistic licensing and the creators can do what they want with, but I enjoy exploring the wasteland, using pre & post war firearms and melee weapons, dealing with raiders and factions like the NCR. Fallout 3 gave me that. i could ignore most of the "fallout" in Fallout. i could steal the declaration of Independence! The game was fun, amazing to look at, and I enjoyed it for many hours and through many characters. I am doing the same with New Vegas. I love the additon, finally, of "hardcoe" though I wish it were done better along with weapon mods, reloading, survival skills, aim down sights, etc.

So you're a fan boy who doesn't like what they have done to your precious game? I feel for you, i really do. I don't liek what Wizards of the Coast did to Magic: the Gathering over the last two, going on three years. Them's the breaks. No one is stopping you from enjoying Fallout 1 and 2. The only person stopping you from enjoying Fallout 3 and New Vegas is yourself [and the bugs ;)] Perhaps you need to take your fan-boy glasses off, look at the game in another light, climb down off of your cross, use the wood to build a bridge and get over it.

Not only are you grossly oversimplifying the New Vegas storyline, but I couldn't disagree more about how Fallout 3's story is more "epic" than Vegas'. In New Vegas your decisions impact a massive amount of people outside of the Mojave Wasteland who belong to either the New California Republic or Caesar's Legion, we're talking several full states here (California, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona to name a few). In Fallout 3 you impact the Capital Wasteland and only the Capital Wasteland, a region which doesn't even cover one entire state. Playing a role in shaping the fate of thousands if not millions of people certainly seems more "epic" than purifying some water for a couple hundred people at the most, at least to me.

Anyway, on topic. I think you're being a bit harsh on Fallout 3 and New Vegas, OP. While they're certainly not perfect games I don't think Bethesda/Obsidian ruined the series forever; while I would have liked a top down, turn based Fallout game (or even top down, real time with pause) Fallout 3, and especially New Vegas are very enjoyable for what they try to do.

still being forced into narrow, crappy story lines

Forced?, the story was there but I don't remember ever being forced down that path, in fact I spent most of my time exploring and building my character in preperation for the story, that takes a little thinking, note your quotes below.
but everyone loved it because it catered to the new generation of low-attention span players

I actually prefered just mindlessly running around and having nothing to do with the storyline.

You prefered mindlessly running around while those with a "short attention span" planned and built their characters?

Did you actually play these games?

I'm no seasoned fallout fan, never played FO1, I attempted FO2 but the isometric view is not my thing and the turn based combat pushed my patience beyond the limit.

But what this really comes down to is change, people don't like change, when you're familiar with something any changes can put people off, I'm 50 years old so you can call me an old timer, but I prefer what we have now, variety is the spice of life, without those changes gaming would become stagnant.

Those of us getting close to our thirties or so that were young when the originals came out and were huge fans are very annoyed. Were you thinking about the true fans or just the ones that played Fallout 3?
You sound like one of those Michael Jackson fans who's annoyed that people started to like him in recent years while you've been a fan for the last 30 years or so, haha.
Anyway, a 'true fan' wouldn't abandon the franchise on ground of arguments like these.

i really want to say that this guy is a troll because thats his only post on here, but it's sad that somebody would take the time out of their day to make a long rant such as that. personally, when i played fallout 3, i was a guns guy, all the way. I put points into small guns, repair, and lockpick because those seemed to be the only worthwhile useful skills.

fallout: new vegas comes out and it really has shown me how much more worthwhile the other skills have been made. checks are constant for things such as: speech, barter, explosives, etc. in dialogue. the other skills are USEFUL! and when I played Fallout 3, i always made roughly the same character build. now, with new vegas, i actually want to experiment with an energy weapons/unarmed character build. completely outside of my normal realm of playing, but i think itd be worth it.

plus, the amount of incredible things you can do in this game is astounding. to me, each location really feels unique and has its own "color." my friend was watching me hunt deathclaws at Quarry Junction last night, in addtion to tackling Black Mountain's super mutants, both of which induced some heart-pounding, terror-filled moments when a deathclaw almost killed me, or a Nightkin appeared from nowhere scaring the hell out of me (and I don't do well with sudden quick movements or loud noises, but i love the game regardless  ). I had fun, my friend had fun watching me being scared [censored]less, and thats really what any game is all about: fun. which the OP clearly lacks an understanding of.
