One of very few disapointments

Is anyone else upset about Lock-picking?
It's too small of a disappointment to actually have any effect on the game, but I hate the way you pick locks. I honestly don't see why they ever changed it from Oblivion.
In Oblivion, you pushed the pins up and applied tension until you hit them all and opened the lock. Then they go and change it for Skyrim (and Fallout 3) to sticking a pick in, and only adjusting the angle.
Not only did Oblivion demonstrate the proper way to pick locks, but it was a much better "mini game".

I find it far more enjoyable than Oblivion's. In Oblivion, I usually just unlocked stuff with the console.

I found Oblivion's lockpicking very frustrating; I really like the new system!

I prefer the new lockpicking system, easier and more logical.

Oblivions lockpicking was easy once you got the hang of it. The problem with that game was that once you learned the behaviours of each pin you could pick a master lock as a beginner.

And its more realistic, the new system is how you go about picking a lock in real life.

I also disagree with the OP. When I finally tried out one of the fallout games (I'm late trying out that series), it was a breath of fresh air. I love that Skyrim has a similar lockpicking minigame. I really did hate the one in Oblivion. Oblivion's lockpicking is why ALL of my characters would train alteration - just so I wouldn't have to pick the dumb locks. Well, that or I'd get the skeleton key ASAP.

I'm sorry that you don't like the new system, but I for one love it.

i hate it. I have broken so many lock picks. I never had a problem in Fallout 3 but maybe it's because my skill is low in Skyrim. I HATE IT THOUGH

I prefer the Fallout/Skyrim lock picking, although the lock picks break way to easily in Skyrim. Try a master lock in the game, the pick will break even if you barely turn the lock. I found lock picking frustrating in the beginning of Oblivion, but once you've picked enough locks it was a piece of cake.

Very true

And its more realistic, the new system is how you go about picking a lock in real life.
Sticking a pick in a lock and only adjusting the angle will definitely not work in real life. Pushing pins up and apply a small amount of tension (to keeps those pins up, while you go for the rest) is actually how you pick locks.

And it seems that I am very outnumbered on my opinion, lol

Because Oblivion had the worst lock picking system in the history of videogames. Going the Fallout route was the only thing to do.

I really like it.

I can't unlock all locks in the freaking world with 1 lockpick like in Oblivion. It was way too easy there.

Yea it's much more of a challenge in Skyrim and I like that :)

Oblivion's one was really boring, and it was really easy to understand and 'cheat' the system by listening to the very obvious noises and looking at the speed etc.

I didn't resent it, cause it kinda looked cool, but I didn't like Oblivion's lockpicking either.

The Skyrim version is fun, and never gets annoying. Although I think this might be due to the sheer number of lockpicks lying around everywhere.

Do any of you remember a game called 'Hillsfar'?
It was part of the 'Pool of Radiance - Hillsfar - Curse of the Azure Bonds - Secret of the Silver Blades' series of games.

It was more of a side game amongst the 3.

But anyway.
If you get a chance, check out the lockpicking mini game on that.

It was realistic...at the time.
You had a set of tools each one a different shape, and you pieced it together like a puzzle. It had a time limit to increase difficulty.

I would suggest that, plus some other factors built in such as pressure applied via thumbstick..
There are 2 thumbsticks. 1 for the rake peices (pressure sensitive), 1 for the hook (also pressure sensitive). Or whatever you want to call it.

It definately could have been much better.

I think the new system is easier than Oblivion's actually, which is probably why I prefer it. With Oblivion I just got frustrated and ended up breaking loads of picks in anger :P

Not for me. Lock Picking is far more awesome to me in Skyrim than Oblivion's "mash the x-button!" variation was.
