Option to disable FXAA

Post » Mon May 21, 2012 6:55 pm

Message for Bethesda

We all know that Skyrim on PS3 is one of the crappiest port that has been ever made. Game is broken, most of the sounds are so cheap that DS games do better, the framerate is choppy and the graphics are ugly, with low resolution washed out blurry texture on every single pixel of the game,
But, there is one thing you can do to make this port "less" bad : GIVE THE USER AN OPTION TO DISABLE FXAA (or whatever AA trick you used) PLEASE!!

Let me explain : Fallout 3 and New Vegas on ps3 didn't have any kind of anti-aliasing, and nobody complained about it. f you really read this forum , you can see there's a lot of complaining about the blurry and washed out textures of the PS3 version, and that i'm not the only one who wants an option to disable this AA thing you used that makes everything blurred and washed out (the colors)

Do you make your games for you, or for your clients? We don't want this AA thing, so do something to satisfy us please! You can keep it activated by default, we just want an option to DISABLE it.We went through a lot, you sold us a cheap broken port and just asked us to wait quietly and "to calm .down".Do something for us please, do what your clients want for once, and we'll be happy

the washed out blurry texture" are like that only because of FXAA . Despite of everything they lowered cnmpared to 360 and PC version,Skyrim on PS3 ?s not ugly. There is just a thing that blurs , wash out everything and make the texture look like the GPU got a hangover and puked , it's FXAA

You are totally wrong , there is an issue with the sound and bethesda support confirmed it.

Which issue is this? I've never seen anyone mention a problem with the sound.

mhba did you play it on 1080p or 740p?? And did you play the 360 version so you can say that the ps3 version is crap? I have seen a lot of videos in youtube and yes, there are ones that puts the ps3 version ugly as hell, but I saw others where the ps3 version has an excellent quality, even surpassing the 360. I don't have the game yet, but this kind of topics make me think better to not buy the game, and if that isn't true I will be doing a great mistake only because of this kind of comments.

A couple of posts have gone away. Calling someone (or their posts, or their topics) a troll is considered flaming on this forum, and can be a warn-able offence. If the OP has an issue with the AA in his game, then he's allowed to create a topic about it.

Yes there is one, a few topics have been made about this issue (almost 80 % of the sounds on PS3 version are like they were encoded in mp3 32kbps: you just have to compare the sound of the first fire spell on PS3 and PC or 360 and you'll definetely see there is something wrong )which happens on every single version of skyrim and Julie, from Bethesda France spoke to me and told me they are aware of the problem.I have tested PC version for an extended period, and my neighbour has the 360 version

The only complaint I have about the sound (and it's not so much a complaint as a "you guys are lame" comment) is their use of some goofball doing a terrible, fake wolf howl. It's almost like it was added as an afterthought during one of the recording sessions. ("hey Mr. Plummer, can you do us a favor and howl like a wolf a few times so we can throw it into the game? We don't have time to download the sound of a real wolf online.")

The Xbox has better textures, better AA, barely any lag at all and generally performs/looks better all around.

I would rather them give us an option to disable the vertical sync for the PS3 version meaning higher frames with some screen tearing.

However the vertical sync that they use is down to an actual piece of hardware within the PS3 as far as I'm aware, so I doubt that they would be able to give us the choice of choosing between no screen tearing and screen tearing, it would have to be one or the other. In comparison the 360 version has less v-sync yet obviously runs a bit better. This was exactly the same case with Fallout 3.

Performance can and will be improved with optimisations, visuals won't. If they don't give us the option to disable AA, it'll keep being ugly. Homever I totally agree with you , it'll be great

The game will look even worse with no AA at all.

That's really a matter of opinion. If some people think having the details on textures blurred out, the colour and sharpness and overall fidelity being lowered and blurred to be worth the anti-aliasing.... than yeah, the game will look worse for those people if they disable teh OPTION.

But for others, like me, who don't care about aliasing, and would rather have the textures look the way they were meant to look, then the option to disable the FXAA would be great.
The screen comparisons show that the PS3 is the crappiest looking version between consoles, with the FXAA washing out and blurring all the textures, and even slight model details at a distance.

I already made a thread about this anyways, apparently people seem to enjoy arguing against "options", such as disabling the v-sync and FXAA.
If more people were aware that these "enhancements" come at the sacrifice of gameplay and framerate, and people made a little bit more noise over these things, then developers would release games with more options. If a game cant' run at a steady framerate with V-sync, then it shouldn't have it enabled.

Here is a REAL comparison:

The textures look much sharper on the xbox 360 version. they use the same texture sets on PS3 and 360 but the PlayStation applies that FXAA filter that washes out the entire image. blurring out finer details and contrast. Not to mention the PS3's unstable frame-rate compared to the 360.
xbox also draws in certain world objects sooner, like mountain details in the distance, and has slightly more detailed trees, which were dumbed down on the PS3 version

So the video all games alpha shows is fake... well I know it now sorry, I thought it wasn't a video to be deceptive (sarcasm)...... What I mean is that yes, indeed, the game looks ugly in "?" hours of play, but the real textures have to look and sometimes look like in the video I show, that video you link, shows a ps3 version of skyrim that is really laggy, by consequence the textures doesn't load correctly, it isn't the fxaa or the blurry, it is the bug of the lag, its just my opinion don't kill me.

I'd like an option to disable FXAA.

At the very least give us the AA method used on the 360.

However, I believe this is a losing proposition. The game is done and bethesda will not recode the AA nor give us a disable option. We're screwed.

FXAA, I've read, is an easy way to implement AA. The ps3 again gets sloppy seconds. Not only is the overall game inferior to the 360 but it also gets the easiest applied AA as if bethesda continued their attitude of passing interest in the ps3. "Oh well we've given the ps3 an inferior port.....lets give it inferior AA as well". "We've given so much love and attention to the 360 we can't spend much time with the bastard child ps3".

This is because you just switched television for a much better one. Half of the times the game does look ugly. The people faces are just dirty spots on the screen, the shadows are made of blocks, the snow and ice get pixelated in large squares. It looks like RE4 HD. The trees are just horrible. In the inside usually it seems to get better, though. The FX AA is really killing things. personally I do prefer to have aliasing.

Personally I don't get it. I find the graphics on my PS3 to be teriffic. Nice and bright and sharp, very detailed. Perfect? Well, no, but ugly is not a word I would even think of using. Whether the graphics are better on the Xbox or PC is totally irrelevant to me. (running on a 1080i HDTV, BTW)

For anyone that doesnt know AA essentially puts grey squares around jaggy images which smooths them out. If you have a black sword next to a green wall the difference between the green wall and the swrod would like a staircase of pixels. With some grey in between them the difference between the contrasting colors is minimized and "smoothed" over. Now the funny thing is that I was outside a fort in skyrim and I had my black ebony sword on a very dark gray wall and I couldnt believe it but I could actually see a slight grey line surrounding my sword!!! I went to third person and walked my dude up to it and again I could notice the AA grey line around him when he was contrasting with a very dark surface. Does this game use some kind of supper thick AA that inserts several grey lines or what man? Anyone else know what I'm talking about? Almost every modern game has some AA but skyrims just seems really in your face! I don't really understand how the AA would blur the textures and all that. Oh well maybe ill seach it up online considering I am on a computer and all!

If you see or play the 360 version you'll see a rather large difference between the games. The 360 version is better overall. Frame rate, textures, AA.....its all better on the 360. Oh, and no game stopping lag on the 360 either.

Nah. As much as I hate this lag in my ps3 version I gotta say by judging the many youtube comparions videos made the ps3 graphic is slightly better than XBOX. A bit sharper in general, and it just looks better.

Now Xbox has 1080p resolution but it's not real, just 720p upscaled.
