EA Origin trying to install itself on my computer?

Here's something scary for you... Take a look at this picture http://i.imgur.com/jGbNO.jpg

That's my screen about a minute after I turned on my computer. Doesn't look very interesting but the catch is that I didn't download Origin and the only EA product I have installed is Mirror's Edge on Steam. Not only that but I have only once visited the EA Origin website and that was a couple of months ago.

I'm not one of those people who just punch the enter key as fast as they can when they are installing new software; I know what I install on my computer

End Times. And people REALLY trust corporations to just not pull down things if SOPA passes? Pfft, yeah right. Talk about naive. If this problem persists, send it to one of the video game news sites. EA has to get some more flak for this, seriously. Your sure it wasn't anyone using your computer?

Huh, this is a mystery. Did you take it up on their forums? + points if you get banned for talking about it. It will only makes this story so much worse. I would take this there and see what people say, if nothing comes of it within a few days. Then I would alert a news site. Escapist is good, destructoid, joystiq, and rock paper shotgun are all suggested. I've noticed they report on EA's [censored] a lot of the time. Destructoid especailly.

I haven't posted on the EA forums because I'm scared that they'll hunt me down and permanently ban me from every game I own (not just my EA Games, EVERY GAME)

and yeah I've already written an email to RPS but I wanted to see if anyone else had this problem before sending it.

Is it possible that this is an infection disguised as Origin?

This sounds like one fairly unique situation, try Destructoid as well. Trust me, they would love to hear about this. Hahahah.

Yea, it could be a virus of some kind. It would be pretty easy to make EA and Origins the punching bag for their nefarious activites.

It's possible but very unlikely since I use noflash and noscript when browsing and I don't download anything from unknown websites.

I haven't seen a virus infection on my computer since 2006

I also format my computer and reinstall the OS every 3 months.

Then the evidence is in your favour, I would go to their forums and ask. Who knows maybe it IS a vrius that you can help to indentify now. Or they have some explaining to do. Either way, I dont think there's much we can do here. Also when you make the thread over there, please private message me a link. I have GOT to catch those fireworks.

I would also like to see it. It's a strange situation and leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Some EA games required the EA download manager (I think that's what it's called), could it be that you still had that installed even though you don't have any EA games installed anymore? If so than the only thing I can come up with is that that program is trying to update/replace itself with origin.

I doubt it though, I also have mirror's edge installed (and spore and crysis 2) and haven't had origin trying to install itself. Have you had other EA games installed in the past?

I've had a few EA games installed in the past but I format my computer every 3 months and the only games I've installed since the last time I did that are Mirror's Edge and BF Bad Company 2, but I uninstalled BC2 a month ago so that can't be it.

Further proof that Origin is the work of Satan. I suggest we gather the torches and pitchforks and go burn down the EA Head Office.

In all seriousness, this is quite scary to me. I deliberatly refuse to install Origin because of the privacy issues, and the last thing I'd want is the blasted thing installing itself without my permission. :swear:

This thread summed up, tell an advlt.
Anyways, I would bring it up on the EA forums then never buy an EA game again.

EA is "Assuming direct Control" of your computer. Much like they did to Bioware.

Time to stop worrying about skynet, and start worrying about origin.

I would ask around, see if this happens to anybody else. This really sounds worrying, and should definitively (I doubt you, oh wondrous spellcheck..) be looked into.

Sounds like Origin is bundled with EA games (from Steam and maybe other places), maybe as a marketing ploy to draw more people to Origin.

Or rather, worry that Origin IS Skynet.

Soon it'll come preinstalled with each copy of Windows, then integrated directly into the OS.

I'd definitely contact some news sites about this Exorince. The more bad publicity Origin gets the more EA will realize it's a stupid idea (or the harder they'll try to control us, but what's life without a little risk?)
